Transformationen från spannsmålssilo till bostadssilo

The silo is a landmark that is known for its unique shape, height and large volume and is now a building that in our big cities threatens extinction. This type of construction is not usually built anymore, all because of new techniques that replaces this kind of large mass grain storages. The intention of the report is to analyze how an industrial building, shaped as a silo can be changed into res

Securitizing China's 'Peaceful Rise' : An Empirical Study of the U.S. Approach to Chinese Trade Practices, Military Modernization and Territorial Disputes in the South China Sea

The U.S.-China relationship is undeniably one of the most important economic and security relationships of the 21st century. Since Barack Obama took office in 2009, increasing emphasis has been put on ending the two wars in the Middle East and to redirect focus towards the increasingly important Asia Pacific region. The U.S. relationship with China has proven difficult to manage, and major differi

Diffusion of European Norms: Adoption of the principle of rule of law by Georgia and Ukraine

Several founding democratic norms of the European Union (EU) may nowadays be found in their emerging stage in the post-Soviet countries outside of the Union’s borders. This is an indication that norms may get diffused, float around the continent and find a fertile soil in a new environment. Thus Georgia, located thousands of kilometers away from the EU, is highlighted as a success story of its coo

Europeanization of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs? A study of the effect of the Common Foreign and Security Policy

This paper explores Europeanization of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs by looking at the impact of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) on the Ministry. Despite being intergovernmental, voluntary, governed by treaties and not laws previous studies suggest that CFSP has an impact on the domestic arena. The analysis is based on the conceptual framework developed by Smith (2000) in whi

Pale King or Noonday Demon? Acedia, The Pale King, and David Foster Wallace's Moral Vision.

This essay argues that acedia is a helpful concept in illuminating the fiction of the American author David Foster Wallace, particularly his unfinished novel The Pale King. Following a brief biographical sketch of Wallace, the essay explores the development of the term acedia—which means something along the lines of apathy, sloth, and listlessness—and the two types of acedia: personal acedia and t

The European sovereign debt crisis: a debt crisis and a sovereignty crisis

With the eruption of the sovereign debt crisis, a huge threat and disaster had been brought to the European Union, the member states and the entire euro zone. The ongoing financial crisis has made it very difficult or even impossible for some member states within the euro zone to re-finance the government debt without the third party’s assistance. Greece being one of those states is experiencing t

The Modern Package: Examining Reactions to the Consumer Society in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and Don DeLillo's White Noise

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Don Delillo’s White Noise both portray the modern world even though they were written over 60 years apart. Despite the fact that these worlds represent very different states of modernity, they are defined by two central traits: technology and consumerism, which influence the characters of both novels in several comparable ways. The concept of packaging is

Phase separation in polyelectrolyte gels interacting with surfactants of opposite charge

Macroscopic phase separation in covalent sodium polyacrylate (PA) networks following the absorption of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide/chloride (CTAB/C) from aqueous solutions is studied experimentally and theoretically. The gels are shown to consist of a solvent-swollen polyelectrolyte network (core), surrounded by a dense surface phase (skin) of polyion/surfactant complexes. The effect of core sw

Activation of the neutrophil nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase by galectin-1

Galectins are a group of lactose-binding proteins widely distributed in nature. Twelve mammalian galectins have so far been identified, but their functions are to a large extent unknown. In this work we study galectin-1 in its interaction with human neutrophils, with regard to both cell surface binding and activation of the superoxide-producing NADPH-oxidase. We show that galectin-1 is able to act

The Effect of Postadded Ethylene Glycol Surfactants on DNA-Cationic Surfactant/Water Mesophases.

The addition of amphiphiles grafted with polyethylene glycol units to constructs of DNA-amphiphiles is of most relevance for applications demanding colloidal stability. In this work, we study the self-assembly behavior of a true ternary mixture comprising (i) an electroneutral complex of DNA and a cationic surfactant (dodecyltrimethylammonium, DTA), (ii) water, and (iii) nonionic surfactant (dodec

The history of scatter hoarding studies.

In this review, I will present an overview of the development of the field of scatter hoarding studies. Scatter hoarding is a conspicuous behaviour and it has been observed by humans for a long time. Apart from an exceptional experimental study already published in 1720, it started with observational field studies of scatter hoarding birds in the 1940s. Driven by a general interest in birds, sever

LL-37-induced host cell cytotoxicity depends on cellular expression of the globular C1q receptor (p33).

The human host-defense peptide LL-37 not only displays antimicrobial activity but also immune modulating properties that trigger intracellular signaling events in host cells. Since the cytolytic activity of high LL-37 concentrations affects cell viability, the function of LL-37 requires tight regulation. Eukaryotic cells therefore benefit from protective measures to prevent harmful effects of LL-3

Noncontact surface wave testing of pavements using microphones.

Pavements are constructed using several layers of materials, and their durability depends mainly on the stiffness modulus and thickness of these strata. Surface wave testing is an effective tool to measure the stiffness and thickness of pavement layers. However, measurements are still based on spot testing with fixed receivers and source. The typical large size of pavements and the cost of closing

Rural India 1970 - 2005: An Arduous Transition to What?

On the basis of a panel study in rural Tamil Nadu, some analytical and comparative studies across India, and the ARIS-REDS survey, I discuss the changing scenario of rural change, the growth of non-farm activities and income, and State interventions until the first decade of the twenty-first century. The overall conclusion is that there are strong evidences of a slow but stable growth of income wi

Compaction and decompaction of DNA in the presence of catanionic amphiphile mixtures

The dissociation of DNA-cationic surfactant complexes with the addition of a negative amphiphile was studied by fluorescence microscopy (FM). The unfolding of DNA molecules previously compacted with cationic surfactant was shown to be dependent on the anionic surfactant chain length; lower amounts of a longer-chain surfactant were needed to release DNA into solution. However, we observed no depend
