COVID Symptom Tracker app launched in Sweden

Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have launched a free app to help map the spread of infection in Sweden and increase knowledge of the coronavirus. “Data from the app will give us a clearer picture of the development of the disease and why some people only experience mild symptoms while others get seriously ill and die”, says Paul Franks, professor of genetic epidemiology. It takes approxim

Drones offer new insights into boreal peatland CO2 emissions

Boreal peatlands store large amounts of carbon, but warmer and drier conditions caused by climate change may turn these ecosystems into carbon sources. Equipped with drones and thermal cameras Julia Kelly, who recently received her doctorate at the Centre for Environmental and Climate Science (CEC), has studied what factors affect the CO2 fluxes in peatland ecosystems. Boreal forests and peatlands

Migratory songbirds climb to extreme altitudes during daytime

Great reed warblers normally migrate by night during its month-long migration from northern Europe to Sub-Saharan Africa. However, researchers have now discovered that during the few occasions when it continues to fly during daytime, it flies at extremely high altitudes (up to 6300 meters). One possible explanation for this unexpected and consistent behaviour could be that the birds want to avoid

New findings indicate ways to increase efficiency in reprogrammed immune cells

The Pereira research group has previously shown that it is possible to reprogram human skin cells into dendritic cells that strengthen the immune system. However, the efficiency of these reprogrammed cells has been shown to be very low. New studies now indicate that there are ways to increase the efficiency of these reprogrammed cells by over 75%. These findings provide mechanistic insights into h

Syrian linguist given sanctuary at LU

Four months ago, Professor Moheiddin Homeidi came to Lund from Syria as the first researcher the University has received through the network Scholars at Risk. Despite the start not being as he imagined he sees exciting opportunities in his new research community.  On the Ebla Private University website, there is a photo of Moheiddin Homeidi in a suit, as the somewhat austere dean of the Faculty of

Eye movement affected in former childhood cancer patients

Nowadays, the lives of the majority of all children with cancer can be spared. However, the cure for the disease comes with a price: some of the survivors will suffer long-term injury from the treatment. A study from Lund University in Sweden now shows that commonly used chemo toxins impair the eyesight in childhood cancer survivors in a way that indicates an impact on the central nervous system.

Gigantic database stores information about democracy worldwide

All over the world, thousands of experts are sitting entering information about their home countries into a huge democracy database. Soon, three quarters of the world’s countries will have been entered. “In my megalomaniac moments, I usually compare the database to the CERN particle accelerator. It will be as important a tool for political scientists as CERN is for physicists”, says Jan Teorell, w

Watch: What cancer research can learn from military strategy

When David Gisselsson Nord, a cancer researcher at Lund University in Sweden, read a history book last summer, he was struck by the similarities between how cancer and insurgencies evolve over time. Could military strategy be used as inspiration for cancer treatment? He teamed up with Robert Egnell at the Swedish Defence University to find an entirely novel approach to his field. ‟There are actual
