The three-gender system in two varieties of Jämtlandic∗ Briana Van Epps, Lund University Abstract. This is a study on the gender system of the Swedish dialect spoken in Jämtland, a province in northern Sweden. The Jämtlandic dialect preserves to a large extent the three- gender system that was present in Old Swedish. The three-gender system manifests in anaphoric pronouns and as agreement in the n

Old Europe, New Europe, Non Europe Reshaping the European Union at the Beginning of the 21st Century Lund University summer course 2010 In the new millennium the EU has faced a number of challenges. First, the integration of the twelve new member states has been a troublesome affair. Second, EU’s relations to its neighbours (e.g. Russia & Turkey) remain a topic splitting the member states. Paclitaxel-coated versus uncoated devices for infrainguinal endovascular revascularisation in chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (SWEDEPAD 1) : a multicentre, participant-masked, registry-based, randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND: Drug-coated devices are frequently used in coronary and peripheral interventions, but their effect on amputation risk in peripheral artery disease is unclear. We assessed whether drug-coated devices affect the rate of above-ankle amputation in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischaemia undergoing infrainguinal endovascular revascularisation.METHODS: The Swedish Drug-Elution Trial

Typical and atypical carcinoid tumors of the lung : a clinicopathological correlation of 783 cases with emphasis on histological features

We present 783 surgical resections of typical and atypical carcinoid tumors of the lung identified in the pathology files of 20 different pathology departments. All cases were critically reviewed for clinical and pathological features and further correlated with clinical outcomes. Long-term follow-up was obtained in all the patients and statistically analyzed to determine significance of the diffe

Hypothermic versus Normothermic Temperature Control after Cardiac Arrest

BACKGROUND The evidence for temperature control for comatose survivors of cardiac arrest is inconclusive. Controversy exists as to whether the effects of hypothermia differ per the circumstances of the cardiac arrest or patient characteristics. METHODS An individual patient data meta-analysis of the Targeted Temperature Management at 33◦C versus 36◦C after Cardiac Arrest (TTM) and Hypothermia vers

Consequences of eliminating adenosine A(1) receptors in mice

The second coding exon of the adenosine A, receptor gene was eliminated by homologous recombination. The phenotype of mice (mixed C57B6/129OlaHsd background) was studied, using siblings from matings of heterozygous mice. Among the offspring the ratio between+/+, +/-and -/-animals was 1:2:1. Over the first half-year-at least-growth and viability were the same in all genotypes. Binding of A(1) ligan

MOONS: the Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph for the VLT

MOONS (the Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph) has been selected by ESO as a third-generation instrument for the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The light grasp of the large collecting area offered by the VLT (8.2m diameter), combined with the large multiplex and wavelength coverage (optical to near-IR: 0.8 -1.8 mu m) of MOONS will provide the European astronomical community with a po

RNA sequencing-based single sample predictors of molecular subtype and risk of recurrence for clinical assessment of early-stage breast cancer

Multigene assays for molecular subtypes and biomarkers can aid management of early invasive breast cancer. Using RNA-sequencing we aimed to develop single-sample predictor (SSP) models for clinical markers, subtypes, and risk of recurrence (ROR). A cohort of 7743 patients was divided into training and test set. We trained SSPs for subtypes and ROR assigned by nearest-centroid (NC) methods and SSPs

K2-99 revisited : A non-inflated warm Jupiter, and a temperate giant planet on a 522-d orbit around a subgiant

We report new photometric and spectroscopic observations of the K2-99 planetary system. Asteroseismic analysis of the short-cadence light curve from K2's Campaign 17 allows us to refine the stellar properties. We find K2-99 to be significantly smaller than previously thought, with R = 2.55 ± 0.02 R. The new light curve also contains four transits of K2-99 b, which we use to improve our knowledge o

Reference standards for gene fusion molecular assays on cytological samples : an international validation study

Aims Gene fusions assays are key for personalised treatments of advanced human cancers. Their implementation on cytological material requires a preliminary validation that may make use of cell line slides mimicking cytological samples. In this international multi-institutional study, gene fusion reference standards were developed and validated. Methods Cell lines harbouring EML4(13)–ALK(20) and SL

Frailty and Cognitive Function in Middle-Aged and Older Adults With Congenital Heart Disease

Background: Life expectancy of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) has increased rapidly, resulting in a growing and aging population. Recent studies have shown that older people with CHD have higher morbidity, health care use, and mortality. To maintain longevity and quality of life, understanding their evolving medical and psychosocial challenges is essential. Objectives: The authors de
