Design and Synthesis of Galectin Inhibitors

Galectins, a lectin family, have shown binding affinities towards b-galactosides. Galectins have been proposed to be involved in a wide range of functions like for example, cell growth, adhesion, migration, chemo taxis and apoptosis. They have also been associated with various cancer types. However, the detailed functions of galectins are still very much unknown. High affinity inhibitors towards t

Copper-free huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition to 3-benzotriazolo-3-deoxy-β-D-galactopyranoside : Cyclization of a galactopyranoside azide and benzyne

Methyl 2-O-acetyl-3-benzotriazolo-4,6-O-benzylidene-3-deoxy- β -D-galactopyranoside was assembled by reacting benzyne, from 2-trimethylsilyl-trifluoromethansulfonylbenzene, and a secondary galactopyranoside azide in a copper-free Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. Following deprotection, the resulting benzotriazoles were evaluated as galectin inhibitors resulting in a 2-4 fold increase in affinity

2-Hydroxypyridine-Ligated Pd-complexes as pre-catalysts in Hydrogen Borrowing Chemistry α -Alkylation of Ketones Using Alcohols

An efficient method for selective alpha-alkylation of ketones with alcohols was developed using 2-hydroxypyridine-based ligands coordinated by palladium as pre-catalysts. The reactions were performed without additional additives under mild reaction conditions. The method is environmentally friendly to build C-C bond as water is the only byproduct. This tandem reaction proceeds via dehydrogenation

The Po Delta Biosphere Reserve: Management challenges and priorities deriving from anthropogenic pressure and sea level rise

The Po Delta Biosphere Reserve is located in Northern Italy and has attained recognition by UNESCO in 2015 due to its unique natural and cultural value. The reserve covers an area of approximately 140 000 hectares, supporting a human population of 118 000, as well as a complex mosaic of ecosystems, which are found in this transitional waters landscape. Administratively the area is highly fragment

BUSINESS MODEL INNOVATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY: A single case study exploring the barriers within this continuous process

The case company under study has conducted a continuous process of business model innovation for sustainability since 2007, but is suffering from barriers present in the process. The limited amount of literature on business model innovation for sustainability provides little guidance on barriers. Therefore, this research aims to contribute to the literature by identifying what barriers are present

Market Gardens as Agroecological Lighthouses: A Case Study in Sweden with the Tool for Agroecological Performance Evaluation (TAPE)

Global agri-food systems are in urgent need of a sustainability transformation guided by best practices of agroecology. The study used the Tool for Agroecological Performance Evaluation (TAPE) to assess the performance of seven market gardens in southern Sweden in comparison to the Swedish horticultural sector. The findings indicate that all participating market gardens could be considered agroeco

Basic Body Awareness Therapy for young adults with autism : - a pragmatic randomized controlled trial

Background: Young adults with autism often have problems with body awareness, also acknowledged by physiotherapists. This may interfere with various physiological and psychological responses, expressed in reduced movement quality. Basic Body Awareness Therapy (BBAT) may be suitable to address these difficulties, to enhance body awareness and movement quality to manage everyday life. Body Awareness

Reservoir simulation model for the design of irrigation projects

This chapter presents a simulation model for the optimization of a reservoir system that is being developed. Simulation studies were carried out, firstly to determine the best (and by how much) irrigation facilities to provide in the proposed new scheme, and secondly, to see the applicability of simulation in reservoir planning. A computer simulation model using MATLAB has been developed to analyz

Brain parasites and misorientation of migratory birds

Haemoproteus blood parasites of birds are thought to be relatively benign. Recent findings show that infections may develop in the brain of birds, possibly distorting their orientation sense. Misdirected migration may lead migrants outside their range where they are recognized as vagrants and can transmit parasites to novel hosts.

Regulating quantum computers : insights into early patterns and trends in academic regulatory conversations on the ‘quantum revolution’

These days, talk of quantum technologies and the coming ‘quantum revolution’ or ‘quantum leap’ is hard to miss. There is a broad agreement that quantum technologies have a high probability of becoming the next disruptive technological development, and the way they should be regulated and the timing of such intervention are issues that are attracting increasing attention. An analysis of how these q

Expressives in Kammu singing

The Kammu people are mainly rice farmers and live on mountain slopes in northern Laos. The chapter studies the expressives of the Yùan Kammu dialect from the combined perspectives of linguistics and ethnomusicology. Kammu expressives are derived from monosyllabic roots, which each carry the general meaning of those expressives that are derived from that root. The morphological processes involved i

Effect of PEM Fuel Cell Technology Advancement on the Energy Efficiency of a Heavy-Duty Vehicle

Fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles (FCHEVs) are a promising solution for decarbonizing heavy-duty transport by combining hydrogen fuel cells with battery storage to deliver long range, fast refuelling, and high payload capacity. However, many existing simulation models rely on outdated fuel cell parameters, limiting their ability to reflect recent technological improvements and accurately predict

In situ measurements of oxidation–reduction potential and hydrogen peroxide concentration as tools for revealing LPMO inactivation during enzymatic saccharification of cellulose

Background: Biochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to simple sugars at commercial scale is hampered by the high cost of saccharifying enzymes. Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) may hold the key to overcome economic barriers. Recent studies have shown that controlled activation of LPMOs by a continuous H2O2 supply can boost saccharification yields, while overdosing H2O2 may lea

Inflammatory depression—mechanisms and non-pharmacological interventions

Treatment of depression is hampered by the failure to identify distinct symptom profiles with distinct pathophysiologies that differentially respond to distinct treatments. We posit that inflammatory depression is a meaningful depression subtype associated with specific symptoms and biological abnormalities. We review several upstream, potentially causative, mechanisms driving low-grade inflammati
