Probing Atomic Scale Structure and Catalytic Properties of Cobalt Oxide Model Catalysts

Catalysts are used to produce a large fraction of the materials we use in our modern society. Avery famous example is the highly efficient catalysts that are used to fix nitrogen from the air intoartificial fertilizer salts. Without this catalytic process, it is difficult to imagine that we could feedthe current population of earth. Artificial fertilizers are, however, not the only product that usCobalt oxides are known to be active catalysts for a number of chemical reactions, but very little is known about the atomic scale processesresponsible for the activity. The research presented in this thesis is focused on obtaining an atomic scale understanding of the chemistry of wellcharacterizedcobalt oxide model catalyst surfaces consisting of pristine and defective CoO and Co3O4 thin films wi

Colonial imprints and the power of language in organizational members talk

The aim of the paper is to discuss, with a broadly postcolonial sensibility, the complex role that language has come to play in the contemporary process of globalization. It attempts to show that language, besides being a medium of communication, has come to play a crucial role in companies’ conquest of the global market, on the one hand, and in defending a general idea of an imaginary homogenous

The Trolley Problem and Isaac Asimov's First Law of Robotics

How to make robots safe for humans is intensely debated, within academia as well as in industry, media and on the political arena. Hardly any discussion of the subject fails to mention Isaac Asimov’s three laws of Robotics. We find it curious that a set of fictional laws can have such a strong impact on discussions about a real-world problem and we think this needs to be looked into. The probably mHow to make robots safe for humans is intensely debated, within academia as well as in industry, media and on the political arena. Intensive grandparenting : Narratives of changing generational practices and relations.

Grandparents’ involvement in their adult children’s everyday family life seems to have increased, especially in relation to care arrangements around grandchildren (Arber & Timonen 2012; May et al., 2012; Cantillon et al., 2021). This is the case also in Sweden, despite extensive public welfare provision of childcare (Hank & Buber, 2009; Björnberg & Ekbrand, 2008). This “new army of pro

Lost in transition? - How the end of the Cold War affected Sweden’s state identity & interests

During the beginning of the 1990’s the world witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union and subsequently the end of the Cold War. This gigantic change within the international system had large ramifications on how states interacted with each other. Within this context, Sweden had a unique position due to its identity of non-alignment combined with an interest for participation in international pea

Perceptions and Experiences of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Education among Students at Swedish for Immigrants – A qualitative study

Background The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a global public health issue. Sweden has a national strategy for prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and migrants are one of the target groups. One strategy to prevent HIV/STI is to increase knowledge through education on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in schools such as the Swedish language scho

" When You Come Together to Eat...": The Social-Scientific Study of the Community Meals as an Identity Shaping Process at Corinth and Galatia.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the community meals as an identity shaping process in Paul’s ekklēsiai. The research question is as follows: In which ways do meals form an identity, community, and equality in Paul’s ekklēsia at Corinth and Galatia, in the light of the Greco-Roman banquet tradition and the Apostolic Decree? I answer this question by focus on meals as a banquet, and meals a

I don’t even think there are environmental politics here! A paper on youth influence and the coal mining industry in Bosnia & Herzegovina

Bosnia & Herzegovina is the 27th largest exporter of coal-fired energy in the world. Multiple organizations are warning about the dangerous rates of air polluting substances in many of the country’s larger cities. Youths in Bosnia & Herzegovina feel alienated from decision-making, making it hard for them to express their voice and concerns. This paper is looking at the situation from a hum

Historiebrukets makt : hur utnyttjade exjugoslaviska politiker historien och den nationella diskursen för att mobilisera under Jugoslavienkrigen?En diskursanalys av nationalism av tre välkända tal.

The purpose of this paper was to show how politicians choose to use the history and the national discourse to mobilize for their ideological purposes. The Yugoslavia war is a clear example of that history can be used as a dangerous weapon during national and ethnical conflicts. To illuminate this a discourse analysis of nationalism and the ideological use of history will be done on three ex-Yugosl

Kampen om Ungdomshuset - Formationen av kollektiva identiteter i en urban social rörelse

This paper concerns the Youth House, Ungdomshuset, and the struggle over it 2006-2008. Arguing that the protests after the eviction of the squatted house created collective identities that are paradigmatic in relation to other social movements and using social movement research combined with marxist human geography the paper investigates the relation of rhizomatic structures, urban material confli

The Effect of Emigration on Unemployment in Source Countries: Evidence from the Central and Eastern European EU Member States

This paper empirically examines the effect of emigration on unemployment in the CEE coun-tries of the EU during 2000-2007. It is argued that the enlargement of the EU in 2004 can serve as a natural experiment which helps to prevent the endogeneity of emigration to unem-ployment, since the drastic increase in the East-West migration after the enlargement was mainly driven by political events rather

Limits of Mutual Recognition in Criminal Matters

At Tampere in 1999, the principle of mutual recognition was declared the cornerstone of criminal law cooperation within the European Union. The idea was that a Member State shall recognise a judicial decision in criminal matters taken by a judicial authority in another Member State as if the decision had been taken by one of its own judicial authorities. The argument put forward was that mutual reÖmsesidigt erkännande utsågs till hörnstenen i det straffrättsliga samarbetet inom the europeiska unionen i Tammerfors (Tampere) 1999.

The Socio-Legal Relevance of Artificial Intelligence

This article draws on socio-legal theory in relation to growing concerns over fairness, accountability and transparency of societally applied artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. The purpose is to contribute to a broad socio-legal orientation by describing legal and normative challenges posed by applied AI. To do so, the article first analyses a set of problematic cases, e.g. image rThis article draws on socio-legal theory in relation to growing concerns over fairness, accountability and transparency of societally applied artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Exercise consumption

Carys Egan-Wyer Our research My research critically explores how people consume endurance experiences—such as triathlon, obstacle adventure racing, and ultra-distance running—and what those consumption patterns can tell us about contemporary society. The findings question the idea that endurance experiences are an escape from the demands of everyday life. Instead, it shows that social (especially

Food-Related Gram-Positive Bacteria: Enterotoxin A Expression in Staphylococcus aureus and a New Regulation Mechanism in Lactococcus lactis

Popular Abstract in English Foods, microorganisms, and humans have been tightly associated from the start of human history. Foods are not only the source of nutrients for humans, but also good media for microorganisms. Although we humans discovered the existence of microorganisms relatively recently, we have been dealing with them for hundreds and thousands of years. We have used some microorganisStaphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) is the most common enterotoxin found in outbreaks of staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP). Based on the amount of SEA produced, S. aureus strains were divided into two main groups, high- and low-SEA-producing strains. The differences in the amounts of SEA formed were found to be associated with the levels of expression of the sea gene and the bacteriophage version
