Enzyme encapsulation in nanostructured self-assembled structures : Toward biofunctional supramolecular assemblies

Enzymes have come into use for many new applications outside their natural biological environment, taking advantage of their high efficiency and selectivity as biocatalysts. Such new application often requires encapsulation to preserve the structure and activity of the enzyme, but also to regulate and control the activity. Here, we will discuss two types of encapsulation, soft matrices consisting

Reimagining the Capitalocentric Present : Unpacking Fantasies of Ethical Consumption: Introducing new Consumer Ethics, and Establishing Sustainable Visions

In this conceptual paper we reimagine the Capitalocentric present. To do so, we (1) critique corporate fantasies about ethical consumption; (2) offer alternative relational ethics of consumption, with special attention to concrete neo-animist practices to imagine alternative futures to the Capitalocentric present, and (3) invite imaginative theorization as a bridge between present and future. In this conceptual paper we reimagine the Capitalocentric present. Improved Melatonin Dissolution Properties : A Way Forward for Treating Children with Sleep Disorders

Sleep problems, in particular the difficulty in initiating and maintaining sleep are important comorbidities in children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), accompanied by a range of negative consequences for both patients and their caregivers. Melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone that is important for coordinating the body's sleep-wake cycle, has been used to

Impact of Functional Models in a Decision Context of Critical Infrastructure Vulnerability

Critical infrastructures provide essential services for the functioning of the society, and disruption of these services can lead to large-scale consequences. Hence, it is of utmost importance to analyze the vulnerability of critical infrastructures and use the results to guide decisions of improving their robustness towards strains. Since real-life critical infrastructures can be regarded as comp

Barker1*, Magdalena Götz2,3* & Malin Parmar4* The ability to repair or promote regeneration within the adult human brain has been envisioned for decades. Until recently, such efforts mainly involved delivery of growth factors and cell transplants designed to rescue or replace a sp

Overcoming Immune Evasion in Staphylococcus aureus : Strategies for Rational Vaccine Design.

Staphylococcus aureus remains one of the most elusive targets in bacterial vaccinology, primarily due to its complex immune evasion strategies and the phenomenon of immune imprinting. Despite decades of research and numerous clinical trials, no vaccine has demonstrated protective efficacy in humans. This review examines the underlying reasons for these failures and proposes a rational, integrativ

From Intensification to Sustainability? Political Leadership and Agricultural Transformation in Ethiopia

Ethiopia achieved a remarkable episode of agricultural intensification from the mid-1990s to the late-2010s, yet the political mechanisms that enabled this transformation—and the distributional and environmental consequences that followed—remain insufficiently understood. This article ex- amines how political leadership, understood in institutional rather than personalistic terms, shaped both the Ethiopia achieved a remarkable episode of agricultural intensification from the mid-1990s to the late-2010s, yet the political mechanisms that enabled this transformation—and the distributional and environmental consequences that followed—remain insufficiently understood. Identification of a novel gene associated with group B Streptococcus persister cell formation and biofilm production

Antibiotic persistence arises when a subset of cells in an otherwise susceptible bacterial population temporarily exhibits elevated tolerance to bactericidal antibiotics. While significant progress has been made in elucidating persister mechanisms, much of this research has focused on Gram-negative bacteria, and these findings are not always applicable to Gram-positive species. This study explores

Summary of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) Consensus Conference on Graft Dysfunction within the First 72 hours after Heart Transplantation : A 10-year Update

Primary graft dysfunction (PGD), defined as ventricular dysfunction occurring within 24 hours after heart transplantation (HTx) in the absence of identifiable secondary causes, remains a major contributor to early post-transplant mortality. Over the past decade, there has been a growing understanding of the burden of PGD, the clinical relevance of PGD classification and severity grading, and effor

Capsule and PspA Cooperatively Confer Resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae to the Human Defensin HNP-1

Streptococcus pneumoniae resists host defenses through multiple surface factors, yet their specific contribution to protection against antimicrobial peptides remains incompletely understood. We examined the role of pneumococcal surface protein A (PspA) and the polysaccharide capsule in protection against the human defensin HNP-1. PspA conferred increased resistance to HNP-1-induced killing, shown

Learning effectiveness of discussion-based crisis management exercises

Crisis management exercises sometimes produce weak or vague learning results with very limited applicability. This paper addresses these problems by developing a theoretical framework on learning from crisis management exercises. The framework focuses on necessary requirements and beneficial factors for the conceptual learning of individuals from discussion-based exercises. The variation theory of

Vulnerability Analyses of Interdependent Critical Infrastructures: Case study of the Swedish National Power transmission and Railway system

Critical infrastructures provide services that are essential for the functioning of our society and extensive disruptions in these can have widespread effects. These effects are not only limited to the directly affected infrastructure but also indirectly through interdependencies to other infrastructures. By only account-ing for the direct consequences when analysing critical infrastructures, the

Cost-Effectiveness and Heterogeneity: Using Finite Mixtures of Disease Activity Models to Identify and Analyze Phenotypes

Heterogeneity in patient populations is an important issue in health economic evaluations, as the cost-effectiveness of an intervention can vary between patient subgroups, and an intervention which is not cost-effective in the overall population may be cost-effective in particular subgroups. Identifying such subgroups is of interest in the allocation of healthcare resources. Our aim was to develop

Monitoring and influencing safety through safety culture

Organizations need to make sure that their level of safety is acceptable. Therefore it is important to know which factors contribute to the level of safety and how to monitor and improve these factors. One method used today to evaluate the level of safety in organizations is safety culture measurements. In different contexts, different models of safety culture are used. Safety culture is often con

Strengthening learning from emergency responses

During the last years a couple of emergencies have affected the Swedish municipality Ljungby and its inhabitants and forced the municipality to initiate emergency responses. Some examples are a flooding that happened during the summer of 2004, the storm Gudrun that occurred in January 2005 and the storm Per that occurred in January 2007. These emergencies, as well as other incidents, are situation
