Evolution of multi-stage dormancy in temporally autocorrelated environments.

Question: Under what circumstances does a capacity for multi-stage dormancy (i.e. dormancy in more than one life-stage) evolve? Mathematical methods: Optimization in stochastic environments. Results are derived both analytically and by simulations. Key assumption: There exists some trade-off between resources allocated to reproduction and adult dormant survival. Different shapes of this trade-off

Mark and Mission : Mk 7:1-23 in its Narrative and Historical Contexts

Det är därför en angelägen uppgift att studera den tidigaste kristendomFew passages in the New Testament Gospels can compete with Mk 7:1-23 when it comes to the history of influence in biblical scholarship. Generations of scholars have turned to this pericope in order to find the message of the historical Jesus, the theology of early Christianity or even the essence of Christianity. In this thesis it is argued that the mainstream interpretation of the cardinal saying

Peripheral leucocyte count variations in rectal cancer treatment.

AIM: Mortality after curative surgery for rectal cancer is increased if surgery is not performed within a week of completed short course radiotherapy. A link to the suppression of leucocytes after neoadjuvant radiotherapy has been suggested. This study investigates the effects of radiotherapy on peripheral leucocyte counts, complications and survival. METHOD: Patient data variables from a retrospe

Variants in the FFAR1 Gene Are Associated with Beta Cell Function

BACKGROUND: The FFAR1 receptor is expressed mainly in pancreatic beta cells and is activated by medium to long chain free fatty acids (FFAs), as well as by thiazolidinediones, resulting in elevated Ca(2+) concentrations and promotion of insulin secretion. These properties suggest that FFAR1 could be a mediator of lipotoxicity and a potential candidate gene for Type 2 diabetes (T2D). We therefore i

Windstorms in Sweden - variations and impacts

Windstorms have caused severe damage on several occasions in Sweden during the last century. A general concern about future projections of climate extremes has raised questions on the variations and impacts of windstorms. The main objective with this work was to reach a deeper understanding of the variability and possible trends in windstorms, and related storm impacts in forests. This was achiev

The Death of Sacred Texts : Ritual Disposal and Renovation of Texts in the World Religions

The Death of Sacred Texts draws attention to a much neglected topic in the study of sacred texts: the religious and ritual attitudes towards texts which have become old and damaged and can no longer be used for reading practices or in religious worship. This book approaches religious texts and scriptures by focusing on their physical properties and the dynamic interactions of devices and habits th

Iterative design of an audio-haptic drawing application

This paper presents the ongoing design and evaluation of an audio-haptic drawing program that allows visually impaired users to create and access graphical images. The application is developed in close collaboration with a user reference group of five blind/low vision school children. The objective of the application is twofold. It is used as a research vehicle to investigate user interaction tech

Acoustofluidic rare cell sample preparation

Acoustofluidics utilizes a combination of acoustics, in the form of ultrasound, and microfluidics to manipulate cells and particles. This has proven to be a versatile method that is gentle to the cells. In this thesis acoustofluidics has been used for processing rare cells in continuous flow. Rare cells are within this thesis defined as cells that are present in numbers of 1-1000 per mL in a much

Using brain imaging to measure emotional response to product appearance

Brain imaging systems are a set of techniques that allow visualizing the regions of the brain that are activated when (emotional) stimuli are presented. Their advantage over traditional methods of measuring emotion, like self-reports is that they leave out response biases. This paper presents what brain imaging measurement can do for emotional design. It also reviews the brain imaging studies that

A neutron scattering and modelling study of aqueous solutions of tetramethylammonium and tetrapropylammonium bromide

We have investigated the properties in water of two tetraalkylammonium bromides (tetramethylammonium, TMA+, and tetrapropylammonium, TPA+), at 0.4 M, using neutron scattering coupled with empirical potential structure refinement to arrive at an atomistic description. Having both a polar and an apolar moiety, it is of interest to determine the strength of each moiety as a function of the alkyl chai

Comparative Study on the Machinability and Manufacturing Cost in Low-Lead Brass

Today, commercially used brasses commonly contain 2 to 4 wt.% lead. As the availability of low-lead and lead-freebrass increase, there are environmental incentives for investigating the consequences of replacing thelead-containing brasses with lead-free equivalents. Generally, lead-free brass is expected to have a lowermachinability than its lead-alloyed counterpart, implying a higher manufacturin

Enhanced endothelin-1 mediated vasoconstriction of the ophthalmic artery may exacerbate retinal damage after transient global cerebral ischemia in rat

Cerebral vasculature is often the target of stroke studies. However, the vasculature supplying the eye might also be affected by ischemia. The aim of the present study was to investigate if the transient global cerebral ischemia (GCI) enhances vascular effect of endothelin-1 (ET-1) and 5-hydroxytryptamine/serotonin (5-HT) on the ophthalmic artery in rats, leading to delayed retinal damage. This wa

Strain dependence of adolescent Cannabis influence on heroin reward and mesolimbic dopamine transmission in adult Lewis and Fischer 344 rats

Adolescent Cannabis exposure has been hypothesized to act as a gateway to opiate abuse. In order to investigate the role of genetic background in cannabinoid-opiate interactions, we studied the effect of Δ(9) -tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) exposure of adolescent Lewis and Fischer 344 rats on the responsiveness of accumbens shell and core dopamine (DA), as monitored by microdialysis, to THC and heroin

Deliberate self‐poisoning : treatment follow‐up of repeaters and nonrepeaters

Since 1986 psychiatrists and social workers of the Lund Suicide Research Center have investigated subjects admitted to the medical intensive care unit after a suicide attempt. Fifty‐nine of 79 deliberate self‐poisoners were interviewed 12 months after a suicide attempt. Twenty‐one had previously been interviewed 6 months after the index suicide attempt. We obtained minor information on 8 subjects.

The Problem of Fit in Flood Risk Governance: Regulative, Normative, and Cultural-Cognitive Deliberations

Flood risk is a growing global concern that is not only affecting developing countries, but also the sustainable development of the most affluent liberal democracies. This has attracted attention to the systems governing flood risk across administrative levels, which vary between countries, but are relatively similar in the Nordic region, with both responsibilities and resources largely decentrali

What is the substitution effect of e-bikes? A randomised controlled trial

As sales of e-bikes increase, so does the need for reliable evaluations of which means of transport the e-bike replaces, what we call the substitution effect. A randomised controlled trial with GPS data from 98 frequent drivers in Sweden was conducted to investigate the effect of the e-bike on modal choice, the number of trips, distance, as well as perceptions of the e-bike as a substitute for the

Interactions in aqueous salt solutions : Atomistic modelling versus experiment

The research in this thesis investigates how atoms and molecules constituting aqueous salt solutions interact using computational approaches, namely Monte Carlo simulations and molecular dynamics simulations. In the first paper, an atomistic model was developed for aqueous solutions of sodium thiocyanate and potassium thiocyanate (NaSCN and KSCN). The model reproduced several experimentally measur
