The dark-side of resource dependency theory : from economic democracy to financialization

The issue of the pro’s and coins with representatives from different interest group on corporate board is lively discussed. Will representatives from stakeholders work in the interest of the stake they represent or in the interest of the companies where they are a director? The issue has a renewed topicality as claim for e.g. consumer groups or experts on environmental issues have been raised. In

Adsorption, desorption, and redox reactions at iron oxide nanoparticle surfaces

Soils play a critical role in the carbon (C) cycle by regulating the atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, and correspondingly the Earth’s climate. However, there are still countless questions of how biological and geochemical soil processes affect the C cycle. To be able to predict future implications on the Earth’s climate, we need to understand these processes. Globally, soils store more C tIron oxide nanoparticles are involved in several important biogeochemical processes. The interfaces between aqueous solutions and iron oxide nanoparticle surfaces are found everywhere in nature, and the chemical and microbial processes occurring at these complex interfaces control e.g. nutrient and contaminant availability and transport. Recently, it has been shown that certain ectomycorrhizal (EC

Responsibility to protect - krävs säkerhetsrådets godkännande?

Responsibility to Protect is a principle that has developed from a report written by ICISS in 2001. The report was inspired by a statement of Kofi Annan where he questioned how the international community would stop another incident like Rwanda or Srebrenica. Since then many situations have occurred that has challenged the concept of R2P. The debate about humanitarian interventions based on intern

Cloning of an insulin-carrying nanocontainer in a Hepatitis B virus system

Studies of virus capsids opens up new opportunities to develop different kind of cargo systems, but also the understanding of the transportation and the releasing of different kinds of cargo molecules. Virus capsids is a protein shell of a virus that encapsulates different types of infecting nucleic acid sequences in their native forms. One of these capsids is the Hepatitis B virus capsid that in

Towards redox active liquid crystalline phases of lipids: a monoolein/water system with entrapped derivatives of ferrocene

The phase and electrochemical behavior of the aqueous mixtures of monoolein (MO) and synthetic ferrocene (Fc) derivatives containing long alkyl chains -(Z)-octadec-9-enoylferrocene (1), (Z)-octadecen-9-ylferrocene (2), and ferrocenylmethyl (Z)-octadec-9-enoate (3)-were studied. At low hydration, the reversed micelles (L-2 phase) and cubic Q(230) phase of MO can accommodate relatively high amounts

Humanitarian intervention— by the sovereignty and for the sovereignty

The Article 2(1) of the Charter of the United Nations has clearly articulated the sovereign equality for all its Members, while the Article 2(7) states that the United Nations will not intervene in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state unless the matters involve in the international peace and security. It seems that once the matters, which are essentially with

Exploring mobile video streaming for socializing with new media tools

Mobile video streaming lets anyone send live video from their mobile phone to the Internet, available for millions to view in real-time. This is a very powerful technology that can be expected to grow in the next few years. This thesis has explored mobile video streaming as a core component in new media tools. It has particularly investigated the possibilities of creating and maintaining a relatio

Contrasting interests or two sides of the same coin? - tracing economic and social interests in the shaping of EU labour law

The development of EU labour and social law has been described as a pendulum in the sense of focus shifting between economic interests, such as competitiveness for industry, and social interests, such as improving working and living conditions. This view is to a large extent based on the presumption that those interests are contrasting and pursuing one of them would necessarily exclude the promoti

Value Investing on the Nordic Stock Market - Does the Magic Formula constitute a viable strategy for outperforming the market?

In this thesis we investigate if following the magic formula can yield superior investment returns in relation to the risk taken. The magic formula is a term coined by Joel Greenblatt, describing a systematic approach to successful stock investing. The strategy identifies high value companies based on return on capital that are selling at a discount to their intrinsic value based on the company’s

Fc epitopes for human rheumatoid factors and the relationships of rheumatoid factors to the Fc binding proteins of microorganisms

Work from our laboratories has shown that the major antigenic determinants for rheumatoid factors (RFs) are in the C gamma 2-C gamma 3 interface region of IgG in the same area that binds staphylococcal protein A (SPA). Furthermore, the Fc binding proteins of groups A, C and G streptococci as well as the Fc binding proteins induced on cell surfaces by herpes simplex virus type I also bind to the sa

Inhibition of herpes simplex virus growth caused by preparations of animal immunoglobulins is not dependent on Fc-Fc receptor interactions

Rabbit, horse, rat, and chicken immunoglobulin G (IgG); rabbit, horse, and goat IgG Fc fragments; rabbit and chicken F(ab')2 fragments, and rat and chicken gamma globulins, in concentrations of 5 and 10 mg/ml, were able to reduce virus production 10- to 10,000-fold when incubated with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)-infected GMK AH1 cells. When the ability of the purified IgGs and gamma globul

Navigating Risks and Barriers for LGBTQ Employees : Perspectives from Managers, HR Professionals, Discrimination Experts, and LGBTQ Individuals

Background and Aim According to Swedish law, employers should take active measures to promote equal opportunities and hinder discrimination. To understand how this can be done effectively, more research is needed. However, few studies in Sweden have explored the work experiences and needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) employees, which was the aim of the 3-year research

Rehearsing Emotions : The Process of Creating a Role for the Stage

This thesis takes as its starting point the dramaturgical metaphor of the world as a stage, which is used in sociological role theories. These theories often presume what stage acting is about in order to use it as a simile for every day acting. My intention is to investigate how stage actors actually work with their roles, in particular how they work with emotions, and how it affects their privatThis thesis takes as its starting point the dramaturgical metaphor of the world as a stage, which is used in sociological role theories. Fc epsilon RI levels and frequencies of peripheral blood dendritic cell populations in allergic rhinitis

The dendritic cell (DC) lineage encompasses a diverse population of cells with unique subtype-specific functions. In peripheral blood, four DC subsets have been identified based on their distinct expression of CD1c, CD141, CD16, and CD123, and these subpopulations exhibit functional properties in immune responses. However, their respective roles in allergic diseases, such as rhinitis, are unclear.
