Vid avdelningen för kärnfysik utvecklas för närvarande andra generationens Ir-koincidensspektrometer. Anledningen till detta är att det finns ett stort behov bland geologer att mäta spårkvantiteter av Iridium i olika geologiska skikt för att korrelera skiktens ålder med eventuella stora meteoritnedslag.
