Pollen-Based Maps of Past Regional Vegetation Cover in Europe Over 12 Millennia—Evaluation and Potential

Realistic and accurate reconstructions of past vegetation cover are necessary to study past environmental changes. This is important since the effects of human land-use changes (e.g. agriculture, deforestation and afforestation/reforestation) on biodiversity and climate are still under debate. Over the last decade, development, validation, and application of pollen-vegetation relationship models h

Living smaller: acceptance, effects and structural factors in the EU

This article examines limits to per capita living space (i.e. living smaller and/or sharing living space) as a measure for achieving sufficiency in housing. It studies the acceptance, motivation and side-effects of voluntarily reducing living space in five European Union countries: Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Spain and Sweden. Insights are derived from an extensive collection of qualitative empirica

Configuring ethical food consumers: understanding the failures of digital food platforms

Digital food platforms are being launched, offering consumers convenient access to ‘ethical’ food. Ensuring the viability of these platforms hinges on attracting and retaining loyal customers. However, recent studies show that despite considerable efforts from market actors, stable platformconsumer relationships are rare in these digitalized food markets. The aim of this paper is to explore and ex

Using pipeline information in a multi-echelon spare parts inventory system - a time limited backorder model

Motivated by collaboration with a global spare parts service provider, we consider a two-echelon inventory system with multiple local warehouses, a so-called support warehouse, and a central warehouse with ample capacity. In case of stock-outs, the local warehouses can receive emergency shipments from the support warehouse or the central warehouse at an extra cost. The focus is on using informatio

Numerical studies of advanced combustion concepts in hydrogen and methanol compression ignition engines

The effects of climate change have led to increasing concern regarding global emissions, especially carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. A significantcontributor to these emissions is the combustion of fossil fuels in internal combustion engines (ICEs). This combustion process is also responsible forother harmful emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), soot, and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Although signific

An assessment of climate extremes in Mbale Municipality in Eastern Uganda

This study investigated historic and future characteristics of precipitation periods in Mbale Municipality. Observed historic (1982–2014) and modeled future (2021–50) precipitation data were analyzed using Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). Modeled data depict a likelihood of more frequent extremely wet and dry periods in near future as compared to historic period. In particular, there is a l

En barock mentalitet och 1600-talet som motsatsernas tid : Exemplet Johan Ekeblad

Mostly known for his letters, written in an impressionistic style, Johan Ekeblad was a nobleman and diplomat during the period of the Swedish Empire (svenska stormakts-tiden) in the seventeenth century. This article seeks to treat Ekeblad and his writing as an example of a baroque mentality—here de+ned as marked by dialectical relation-ships of old and new, order and disorder, the religious and th

Home ranges, directionality and the influence of moon phases on the movement ecology of Indian flying fox males in southern India

Flying foxes of the genus Pteropus are amongst the largest fruit bats and potential long-range pollinators and seed dispersers in the paleotropics. Pteropus giganteus (currently P. medius) is the only flying fox that is distributed throughout the Indian mainland, including in urban and rural areas. Using GPS telemetry, we mapped the home ranges and examined flight patterns in P. giganteus males ac

SWEDEN’s Response to COVID-19: A tale of trust, recommendations, and odorous nudges: Available at: https://blog.petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2020/05/12/sweden-global-responses-covid19/

The Swedish response to the Corona-crisis has been relatively moderate compared to most other countries. Sweden did not opt for a total lockdown, did not close elementary schools, day cares, bars, restaurants, movie theaters, and other places of business. Public gatherings of up to 50 people are still allowed until further notice. Sweden’s intra EU borders remain open – in contrast to its neighbor

Articulations of antimicrobial resistance in trade union financed journals for nurses in Scandinavia– a Foucauldian perspective

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacterial infections is a growing threat to humanity and a challenge to healthcare systems worldwide. Healthcare professionals have an important role in preventing AMR and the spreading of infections. This article focuses on trade union financed journals for nurses in Scandinavia studying how the journals articulate AMR to its readership. Priors and Posteriors in Bayesian Timing of Divergence Analyses : The Age of Butterflies Revisited

The need for robust estimates of times of divergence is essential for downstream analyses, yet assessing this robustness is still rare. We generated a time-calibrated genus-level phylogeny of butterflies (Papilionoidea), including 994 taxa, up to 10 gene fragments and an unprecedented set of 12 fossils and 10 host-plant node calibration points. We compared marginal priors and posterior distributio

Bilder av socialtjänsten – hur socialtjänstens arbete med barn och unga framställs i dagspress

This study focuses on how the daily press portrays social workers and their work with children and teenagers. It is a discourse analysis with social constructivism as the theoretical framework. The method was a qualitative cross-section together with Fairclough's model of critical discourse analysis. The material consists of news articles from three of the largest newspapers in Sweden from the

Beyond linear progress : Towards a material-temporal understanding of infrastructural unmaking

The implementation of low-carbon futures requires both the assembling of new technologies, and practices, as well as the ‘unmaking’ of extant high-carbon infrastructures. Here, we bring together geographical, STS, anthropological, and sociological thinking on time to re-conceptualise such processes of unmaking. We argue that a focus on temporalities is especially pertinent to the unmaking of mater

The Role of Energy Quality in Shaping Long-Term Energy Intensity in Europe

On the European aggregate level there is an inverted-U curve for long-term energy intensity. In the 19th century aggregate European energy intensity rose, followed by a declining trend during the 20th century. This article discusses the possible explanations for the declining trend during the 20th century and explores the role of energy quality as expressed in energy prices. For the first time a c

Yrkeskunnande och kompetensutveckling i arbetet med vuxna individer med utvecklingsstörning – ett vårdarperspektiv

Since the law of support and service for people with certain disabilities (LSS) was implemented 1994, the carers’ role has changed from «taking care of» to «giving support to» people with intellectual disabilities/autism, but the requirements of knowledge hasn’t been altered. In order to provide appropriate support, carers need both theoretical knowledge and experience of how people with intellect

Robustness and uncertainty in terrestrial ecosystem carbon response to CMIP5 climate change projections

We have investigated the spatio-temporal carbon balance patterns resulting from forcing a dynamic global vegetation model with output from 18 climate models of the CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5) ensemble. We found robust patterns in terms of an extra-tropical loss of carbon, except for a temperature induced shift in phenology, leading to an increased spring uptake of carbon.

Toward an ecologically meaningful view of resource stoichiometry in DOM-dominated aquatic systems

Research on nutrient controls of planktonic productivity tends to focus on a few standard fractions of inorganic or total nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). However, there is a wide range in the degree to which land-derived dissolved organic nutrients can be assimilated by biota. Thus, in systems where such fractions form a majority of the macronutrient resource pool, including many boreal inland wa
