Connecting Student and Society

Collaborate with our students Collaborating with Lund University School of Economics and Management (LUSEM) means getting to know our students, your future employees. Through recruitment activities, internships, projects, theses, cases, and other forms of externally engaged learning, students gain experience of real-world contexts while organisations gain meaningful ways to engage with the school

Transient birefringence and dichroism in ZnO studied with fs-time-resolved spectroscopic ellipsometry

The full transient dielectric-function (DF) tensor of ZnO after UV-laser excitation in the spectral range 1.4-3.6 eV is obtained by measuring an m-plane-oriented ZnO thin film with femtosecond (fs)-time-resolved spectroscopic ellipsometry. From the merits of the method, we can distinguish between changes in the real and the imaginary part of the DF as well as changes in birefringence and dichroism

Degrowth: A Path to Transformative Solutions for Socio-Ecological Sustainability

This article highlights the potential of degrowth as a transformative approach that can expand capacities necessary for socio-ecological sustainability. By addressing economic growth as a fundamental driver of unsustainability, degrowth offers a concrete pathway towards achieving sustainable outcomes. It calls for sustainability scientists to explicitly consider the role of economic growth, aligni

How socio-technical regimes affect low-carbon innovation : Global pressures inhibiting industrial heat pumps in the Netherlands

This paper shows that the socio-technical barriers that sustainable innovations face, may stem from global regimes. Existing transitions approaches like the Technological Innovation System (TIS), overlook the impact of global regimes on radical innovation. Building on institutional theory, we therefore develop a theoretical framework that captures TIS-regime interaction, allowing us to analyze the

Keratin-Chitosan Microcapsules via Membrane Emulsification and Interfacial Complexation

The continuous fabrication via membrane emulsification of stable microcapsules using renewable, biodegradable biopolymer wall materials keratin and chitosan is reported here for the first time. Microcapsule formation was based on opposite charge interactions between keratin and chitosan, which formed polyelectrolyte complexes when solutions were mixed at pH 5.5. Interfacial complexation was induce

Computational Fluid Dynamics Support for Fontan Planning in Minutes, Not Hours : The Next Step in Clinical Pre-Interventional Simulations

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling may aid in planning of invasive interventions in Fontan patients. Clinical application of current CFD techniques is however limited by complexity and long computation times. Therefore, we validated a "lean" CFD method to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and an "established" CFD method, ultimately aiming to reduce complexity to enable predictive CFD durin

Navigating academic career

If you are interested in pursuing an academic career, there is a number of things you need to know. It is good to be aware of these things early on, so you can plan accordingly. Small biotopes in agricultural landscapes: importance for vascular plants and effects of management

Popular Abstract in Swedish Under 1900-talet har jordbruket förändrats drastiskt. OAs a consequence of agricultural intensification, large areas of non-crop habitat have been lost and farmland biodiversity has declined. Previous studies have shown that the extent of non-crop habitat influences farmland biodiversity, but the relative importance of different habitat types is less well known and the contribution of small incidental habitats to landscape-scale species richness is no

Tracking and positioning using phase information from estimated multi-path components

High resolution radio based positioning and tracking is a key enabler for new or improved cellular services. In this work, we are aiming to track user movements with accuracy down to centimeters using standard cellular bandwidths of 20-40 MHz. The goal is achieved by using phase information from the multi-path components (MPCs) of the radio channels. First, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used

Structural transformation, the knowledge economy, and the geography of low-income work

The structural transformation toward the knowledge economy is often credited with increasing polarization and precarization of the low end of the labor market. Little is known, however, about the geography of low-income work since the literature has largely ignored sub-national variation. This article explores how the knowledge economy as the main driver of the transformation has affected the conc

Dynamics of cellulase production by glucose grown cultures of Trichoderma reesei rut-C30 as a response to addition of cellulose

An economic process for the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose would allow utilization of cellulosic biomass for the production of easily fermentable low-cost sugars. New and more efficient fermentation processes are emerging to convert this biologic currency to a variety of commodity products with a special emphasis on fuel ethanol production. Since the cost of cellulase production currently accou

Temperature constraints on the growth and functioning of root organ cultures with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

(.) In this study we investigated the effects of temperature on fungal growth and tested whether the differences in fungal growth were related to the effects of temperature on carbon movement to, or within, the fungus. (.) Growth curves and C uptake-transfer-translocation measurements were obtained for three arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) isolates cultured within a 6-30 degrees C temperature r

Spreading introgression in the wake of a moving contact zone

An increasing number of studies describe moving hybrid zones. This raises the issue of their actual frequency and emphasizes the need for methods that enable the detection of zone movements without historical records. Asymmetric introgression, usually considered as a signature of geographical shift, might be misleading when applied to mitochondrial or potentially non-neutral markers. We investigat
