Biogeochemical and environmental drivers of coastal hypoxia

Recent reports have demonstrated that hypoxia is widespread in the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea. Here we evaluate the long-term trends of dissolved oxygen in bottom waters and of the drivers of coastal hypoxia. Eleven of the 33 sites evaluated had increasing trends of bottom water dissolved oxygen, but only the Stockholm Archipelago presents a consistent positive increasing trend in time. The va

The Little Ice Age: evidence from a sediment record in Gullmar Fjord, Swedish west coast

We discuss the climatic and environmental changes during the last millennium in NE Europe based on a ca. 8-m long high-resolved and well-dated marine sediment record from the deepest basin of Gullmar Fjord (SW Sweden). According to the Pb-210- and C-14-datings, the record includes the period of the late Holocene characterised by anomalously cold summers and well-known as the Little Ice Age (LIA).

I statens tjänst för rikets bästa. Kvinnors successiva inträde i den manliga arkivvärlden under 1900-talets första hälft.

This Master’s thesis aims to highlight the first decades of the Swedish archival society from a gender perspective. The timeframe of the research stretches from 1899, when the first Swedish National Archive’s regional archive was founded, to the 1960s, when the first women were employed as archivists. It includes the regional archives of Vadstena, Lund, Visby and Östersund. The theoretical basis f

CASE STUDIES OF DESERTIFICATION MONITORING. -A DISCUSSION OF EU INITIATIVES

The word “desertification” was introduced in 1949 by the French scientist Aubreville in his report “Climats, forêts et désertification de l´Afrique tropicale”. The concept, however, was discussed earlier by European and American scientists in terms of increased sand movements, desiccation, desert and Sahara encroachment and man made deserts. Desertification, at the beginning of last century, mea

”Dom ser sig inte som personer som har problem” - En studie av socialarbetares uppfattningar av unga narkotikamissbrukare.

The use of drugs has increased among young people in Sweden and it is the social workers responsibility to both support and control those who use drugs. According to Swedish law, all illegal drug use is viewed as abuse. However it has been shown that the concept of drug abuse is more complex and that it is not a guarantee that everyone who experiments with drugs will fall into long term use. The p

Hövding - en ny cykelhjälm

The bike helmet is certainly a topic of current interest. From January the 1st 2005 it is mandated by law that children under 15 years old must use bike helmet when biking or being given a lift on a bike. There is an ongoing debate about the next step, to develop the law on bike helmet to apply for adult bicyclists as well. If a law like this would be established, the request on bike helmets would

New evidence of Holocene atmospheric circulation dynamics based on lake sediments from southern Sweden: a link to the Siberian High

Oxygen (delta O-18) and carbon (delta C-13) isotope records of calcitic carbonate components (Chara sp. algal encrustations and Bithynia tentaculata gastropod opercula) from a lake-sediment succession on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland, south-eastern Sweden, have been obtained to investigate regional climate dynamics during the Holocene. The hydrological sensitivity of the small lake, particularl

Factors Influencing Occupational Engagement in Day Centers for People with Psychiatric Disabilities.

Occupational engagement is a vital factor in people's lives since it has been shown to be important for health and well-being. Community-based day centers (DCs), both meeting place-oriented and work-oriented ones, are common service alternatives in many western countries for enabling engagement in productive and leisure occupations among people with psychiatric disabilities. Little is, however, kn

Evacuation planning optimization based on a multi-objective artificial bee colony algorithm

Evacuation is an important activity for reducing the number of casualties and amount of damage in disaster management. Evacuation planning is tackled as a spatial optimization problem. The decision-making process for evacuation involves high uncertainty, conflicting objectives, and spatial constraints. This study presents a Multi-Objective Artificial Bee Colony (MOABC) algorithm, modified to prov

Does modularity trump usability? Assessing modular facility solutions for the public sector

Purpose: Western societies are currently facing major demographic changes, due to megatrends such as urbanization, ageing of the population, and migration. These disruptions placea lot of pressure on public services, and consequently on municipal facilities includingschools, day-care centres, and hospitals. The purpose of this study is to examine the potentialof modular facility solutions to respo

Global warming potential and energy analysis of second generation ethanol production from rice straw in India

The environmental sustainability of cellulosic ethanol production from rice straw in India is conducted using life cycle assessment (LCA). Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, net energy ratio (NER) and net energy balance (NEB) are studied for ethanol production system using two diverse pretreatment technologies, i.e. dilute acid (DA) and steam explosion (SE) followed by separate hydrolysis and ferment

An explicit link between Gaussian fields and Gaussian Markov random fields; The SPDE approach

Continuously indexed Gaussian fields (GFs) is the most important ingredient in spatial statistical modelling and geo-statistics. The specification through the covariance function gives an intuitive interpretation of its properties. On the computational side, GFs are hampered with the "big-n" problem, since the cost of factorising dense matrices is cubic in the dimension. Although the computational

Tourist information behaviour on site: smartphones and planned serendipity

Smartphones have become one of the main tools for travel information search, especially on site, during the trip. The use of mobile technologies and ubiquitous internet connectivity do not only allow tourists to access information anywhere, at any time, but have deep impacts on tourists’ behaviours and on their whole tourist experience. The study suggests an interpretation of tourists’ information

A randomized controlled trial of the effectiveness of teacher continued professional development on student language outcomes

BACKGROUND: Continued professional development (CPD) is required for updated skills and knowledge. This study evaluates the efficacy of a CPD programme for mainstream school teachers.AIMS: In an 11-week intervention programme, speech-language therapists (SLTs) presented the participating teachers with whole-class teaching techniques aimed at creating a language and communication-supporting classro

Evalutation of two commercial deep learning OAR segmentation models for prostate cancer treatment

Purpose or ObjectiveTo evaluate two commercial, CE labeled deep learning-based models for automatic organs at risk segmentation on planning CT images for prostate cancer radiotherapy. Model evaluation was focused on assessing both geometrical metrics and evaluating a potential time saving.Material and MethodsThe evaluated models consisted of RayStation 10B Deep Learning Segmentation (RaySearch Lab

Health care utilization among individuals who die by suicide as compared to the general population : a population-based register study in Sweden

BACKGROUND: Globally, 700 000 people die every year by suicide. Health care consultation patterns the period before suicide could be one potential way to identify people at risk for suicide. Therefore, this study examines health care patterns up to one year prior to the suicide by age, sex and prior diagnoses and specifically investigates if and how this differs from the general population of Skån

Allocation decisions and emergency shipments in multi-echelon inventory control

The control of inventories is a key issue for achieving efficient management of supply chains. This Licentiate Thesis is devoted to inventory control theory, a subdiscipline within the field of operations research and the management sciences. The objective of the research presented is: To develop mathematical models for efficient control of stochastic multi-echelon inventory distribution systems,

Temperature and Tree Size Explain the Mean Time to Fall of Dead Standing Trees across Large Scales

AbstractDead standing trees (DSTs) generally decompose slower than wood in contact with the forest floor. In many regions, DSTs are being created at an increasing rate due to accelerating tree mortality caused by climate change. Therefore, factors determining DST fall are crucial for predicting dead wood turnover time but remain poorly constrained. Here, we conduct a re-analysis of published DST f

The influence of ignition control parameters on combustion stability and spark plug wear in a large bore gas engine

The paper presents novel studies on the impact of different ignition control parameters on combustion stability and spark plug wear. First, experimental results from a 32.4-liter biogas fueled large bore single cylinder spark ignition engine are discussed. Two different ignition systems were considered in the experiment: a DC inductive and an AC capacitive. The spark plugs used in the experiment w
