Negotiating Heresy : The Reception of Origen in Jerome's Eschatological Thought

The aim of this study is to examine the reception of Origen of Alexandria (185-253/54) in the eschatological thought ofJerome of Stridon (347-419/20). Jerome, who was a Christian ascetic writer and a biblical commentator, relied heavily on Origen’s works during the first part of his career. Due to the Origenist controversy, which took place in the 390s and was initiated by Bishop Epiphanius of Sal

Across landscapes and seascapes : The movement ecology of diving and flying guillemots and gulls during breeding

Some seabirds we encounter only fleetingly, as they fly by as we walk along the beach, or perhaps meet far out at sea when we take a boat trip. Others though we are more familiar with, such as the ‘seagulls’ that many will not even turn their head to appreciate. Yet, all seabirds have remarkable stories to tell, and we are fortunate now to live at a time where we can follow individual birds as theMost seabirds breed colonially, at which time they make central-place foraging trips. Parents must collect food both for themselves and for egg production/chick-rearing. How should they forage? I followed five species across two sites in Sweden in the Baltic Sea using GPS and time-depth recorder (TDR) devices, giving information on both flight and diving activity. I use a movement ecology approach

The Social Origins of State Capacity: Organizations, Institutions and Late Development

Cases of successful developmental states constrained by democratic institutions pose challenges to the literature on the political economy of late development. Science policy on medical genetics : Knowledge and values of human heredity in the Swedish Welfare State

Interest in human heredity has a long history in Sweden. In the 1920s the Parliament decided on a State institute for race biology and in the 1930s a sterilization legislation that put eugenics into practice was enacted. During the postwar decades both research and the political-medical practices were successively transformed: medical genetics became established and proclaimed as a new research fiInterest in human heredity has a long history in Sweden. The relevance of the encyclopaedia : From semiosis to sedimentation and back again

Unlike what is usually taken for granted in semiotics, communication, in the sense of semiosis, does not essentially depend on transport and/or recoding. Instead, it consists in the creation of an artefact, with the additional setting of a task of interpretation. This task may be set by the addressee, just as likely as by the addresser. In making this suggestion, we are inspired by Husserlean phen

Yogic Breathing and Mindfulness as Stress-Coping Mediate Positive Health Outcomes of Yoga

Objectives. Despite accumulating research on yoga and its positive impact on both physiological and psychological health, it is still unclear how yoga improves health. Two central components of yoga: yogic breathing and mindfulness, may be important mechanisms by which individuals learn to cope with their daily stressors, and thereby reduce their risk of developing stress-related illness. To show but not tell : formalism as means to rearrange and destabilize memories of 1970s feminist art

In-situ peel test analysis via synchrotron tomography and DVC

To study adhesion in flexible laminates, standardised peel tests are commonly used where macroscopic measurements, e.g. peel force versus peel arm displacement, are extracted. However, insights into the adhesion mechanisms at the microscopic scale are limited. This study has developed a framework for determining peel arm geometry parameter evolution and deformation in packaging material laminates.

Thermal Considerations in Bulk Acoustic Wave Devices towards Optimised Acoustofluidics

The main goal of my studies was obtaining bulk acoustofluidic devices able to achieve high energy density inside a water-filled cavity. This led us to explore the interplay of sound and thermal effects more in details. Hence, this thesis covers both thermoacoustic effects in Bulk Acoustic Wave devices and a revisited approach for designing them, focusing on achieving good performance. Thermoacoust

SkiROS—A skill-based robot control platform on top of ROS

The development of cognitive robots in ROS still lacks the support of some key components: a knowledge integration framework and a framework for autonomous mission execution. In this research chapter, we will discuss our skill-based platform SkiROS, that was developed on top of ROS in order to organize robot knowledge and its behavior. Marine exploitation and the arrival of farming : resolving the paradox of the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in Denmark

The transition to farming in the coastal environments of southern Scandinavia remains a key conundrum in European prehistory. This region was heavily exploited by Late Mesolithic communities of the Ertebølle culture, complex hunter-fisher-gatherers who flourished for some 1500 years prior to the arrival of farming at around 4000 BCE marking the start of the Neolithic period.
