Degradation of human secretory immunoglobulin A by Blastocystis
Microbial immunoglobulin A (IgA) proteases cleave human secretory IgA, promoting the mucosal adhesion of pathogens. To investigate if the enteric protozoan Blastocystis degrades human secretory IgA, cell lysate and conditioned medium from two species were exposed to immunoglobulin A. Secretory IgA was cleaved by both cell lysate and conditioned medium with mainly cysteine proteinase activity in B.

Development and application of soy-protein films to reduce fat intake in deep-fried foods
A soy protein film coating was developed and evaluated to reduce fat transfer in deep-fried foods during frying. Soy protein isolate solutions (10% SPI) with 0.05% gellan gum as plasticizer cooled after being held at 80 degrees C for 20 min provided suitable films. There was a significant fat reduction (55.12(+/-6.03)%db) between fried uncoated and coated discs of doughnut mix. The same films were

Reprogramming primary melanoma cells to dendritic cell fate enhances tumor immunogenicity
Background Direct cell reprogramming is characterized by the use of defined factors to rewire the transcriptional and epigenetic network of one cell-type into one of a different lineage. We have recently identified the transcription factors PU.1, IRF8, and BAFT3 (PIB) as sufficient to induce a type 1 conventional dendritic cell (cDC1) fate in both somatic and cancer cells.1,2 cDC1 is a rare dendri
The cultural production of scalability : Music, colonialism and the Moravian missionary project
What role has music played in global colonial projects? And how has musical colonisation been implemented on a large scale? To address these questions, I analyse the work of the evangelical missionary administrators Christian Ignatius Latrobe (1756–1836) and Hans-Peter Hallbeck (1784–1840). Latrobe was a London-based music historian, composer and editor who oversaw the missionary work of the Morav

Aligning the smiles of dating dyads causally increases attraction
Social interaction research is lacking an experimental paradigm enabling researchers to make causal inferences in free social interactions. For instance, the expressive signals that causally modulate the emergence of romantic attraction during interactions remain unknown. To disentangle causality in the wealth of covarying factors that govern social interactions, we developed an open-source video-
Advancing personalised care in atrial fibrillation and stroke : The potential impact of AI from prevention to rehabilitation
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a complex condition caused by various underlying pathophysiological disorders and is the most common heart arrhythmia worldwide, affecting 2 % of the European population. This prevalence increases with age, imposing significant financial, economic, and human burdens. In Europe, stroke is the second leading cause of death and the primary cause of disability, with numbers
Why Did Japan Cut Funding to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women?
Japan’s decision to end it contribution to the U.N.’s top gender equality body could hardly come at a worse time, both diplomatically and symbolically.
Dispatchable Battery Swapping System with Centralized Charging and Renewable Energy Generation
The effort to electrify society has in recent years resulted in major changes in the transportation sector. Charging time remains a challenge in several applications such as transportation and heavy machinery. A proposed solution that shortens the energy replenishment time and adds flexibility in loading the grid is to battery-swapping: exchanging the depleted battery for a fully charged one. In s
Revealing teaching quality through lesson semantics : A GPT-assisted analysis of transcripts
BACKGROUND: Existing conceptions of teaching quality assume that classroom interactions serve as the foundation for effective teaching. The resulting data necessitates analytical approaches capable of extracting the semantics of these interactions.AIM: This study investigates whether and to what extent lesson semantics provide insights into teaching quality (i.e., cognitive engagement, encourageme
Are Climate Negotiations Making Any Progress?
This paper provides a historical overview of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties meetings and reviews the major outcomes of the meetings up to the most recent, which took place in Dubai. We describe how climate negotiations, agreements and policies have evolved, summarise the main points reached, and highlight the key concerns of low-income countries
Positive emotional regard towards the host culture mediates the way bicultural bilinguals detect emotional cues of facial expressions of happiness in a visual search task
We investigated the role of cultural experience in the search advantage for happy faces. European British participants living in the UK, Asian Japanese participants living in Japan, and Asian Japanese participants living in the UK, were required to search for a happy or an angry face target against a background of neutral facial expressions, using Asian Japanese and European American faces. Risk Factors for Primary Bone Cancer After Childhood Cancer : A PanCare Childhood and Adolescent Cancer Survivor Care and Follow-Up Studies Nested Case-Control Study
PURPOSE: Radiation to the bone and exposure to alkylating agents increases the risk of bone cancer among survivors of childhood cancer, but there is uncertainty regarding the risks of bone tissue radiation doses below 10 Gy and the dose-response relationship for specific types of chemotherapy.METHODS: Twelve European countries contributed 228 cases and 228 matched controls to a nested case-control
