Investigator self-interest in the environmental process
The Swedish Environmental Code states that certain potentially harmful activities must not be pursued without a permit. When applying for a permit, the applicant shall submit an environmental impact assessment, which describes the effects that the activity might have on the environment. This article discusses the risk that investigator self-interest decreases the adequacy of environmental impact as
Cellulosic Bioethanol Production
This chapter discusses some aspects of various separation technologies applied in bioethanol production from lignocellulosic materials. Bioethanol can be produced from lignocellulosic biomass using several different process configurations. The main energy-demanding process steps in lignocellulosic ethanol production are distillation to concentrate the ethanol, adsorption to remove the final conten
Quasi diabatic CASSCF state functions
A new method to determine quasi diabatic (QD) CASSCF states is presented. The adiabatic states are subjected to a unitary transformation resulting from diagonalization of a state-selection operator. The latter is constructed from the overlap of the adiabatic states with a suitable set of reference states. The multi-state (MS) CASPT2 method is used to account for the dynamical correlation effects i
Stability of immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B during chemo-enzymatic epoxidation of fatty acids
The parameters affecting the lipase activity and operational lifetime during chemo-enzymatic epoxidation of fatty acids were investigated. Immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B (Novozym (R) 435) was incubated in the presence of various reaction components (i.e. toluene, water, H2O2, oleic acid, perpalmitic acid, and epoxystearic acid, respectively) at temperatures between 20 and 60 degrees C fol
The Influence of Narrative Specificity and Voice Quality when Listening to Audio Descriptions: a Comparison of the Sighted and the Blind
Audio description (AD) serves as a vital means to make visual media accessible to non-sighted and visually impaired audiences. This study systematically investigates the impact of narrative specificity and voice quality on imageability and comprehension in both sighted and non-sighted populations. Twenty non-sighted participants, including congenitally blind individuals and those who lost their si
It is a cultural analysis on the rights of the citizens to be seen, heard and acknowledged as identities or communities in the political public sphere; which is the very foundation of

Impact of staining on cell acoustic properties
Cell staining techniques are essential for cell visualization and bioanalysis, providing valuable insights into cellular structure, function, and behavior. Despite their significance, the impact of staining processes, such as dye penetration, adsorption, or hydrogen bonding, on the physical properties of cells remains largely unexplored. Acoustic methods have proven effective in noninvasively prob
Maskinkroppens gräns : Våld, immunitet och medieakologiska aggregationer i The Last of Us
This article examines the portrayal of bodily boundaries in the videogame series The Last of Us. Drawing on theories of media ecology and posthumanism (most notably Deer’s notion of radical animism, Haraway’s theories of the cyborg, and Fuller’s account of media assemblages), three aspects of this portrayal are described: first, the game’s narrativization of bodily violence through an amalgamation
Single-cell sequencing in translational cancer research and challenges to meet clinical diagnostic needs
The ability to capture alterations in the genome or transcriptome by next-generation sequencing has provided critical insight into molecular changes and programs underlying cancer biology. With the rapid technological development in single-cell sequencing, it has become possible to study individual cells at the transcriptional, genetic, epigenetic, and protein level. Using single-cell analysis, an
An Industrial Application of a Self-Tuning Regulator
An implementation of a self-tuning regulator is described. The regulator algorithm consists of two steps. Firstly the parameters of a model of the process are estimated in real time using the method of least squares. Secondly a minimum variance regulator based on the estimated parameters is computed at each sampling interval. Implementation of the algorithm on a process computer is discussed. Ques
Reduced order modeling for nonlinear structural analysis using Gaussian process regression
A non-intrusive reduced basis (RB) method is proposed for parametrized nonlinear structural analysis undergoing large deformations and with elasto-plastic constitutive relations. In this method, a reduced basis is constructed from a set of full-order snapshots by the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), and the Gaussian process regression (GPR) is used to approximate the projection coefficients.
Using provocative PR and promotional communication to leverage a vegan activist brand: An exploratory study of Mr. Charlie’s communicative strategies
An increasingly competitive market, as well as transforming consumer expectations, have considerably altered the socio-economic landscape in which contemporary profit-making organizations operate. As a result, it is more difficult than ever to establish a successful and distinct brand, whilst adhering to fast-changing customer demands – especially when consumers bank on brands to fulfil a higher p
Does Early Palliative Care Improve Quality of Life for Patients with Incurable Gastro-intestinal Cancers? A Randomized Study
Effects of Data Mining Processes on Decision Making Style
The thesis aims to understand if the use of a structured data mining process has an impact on rationality or intuition in decision making. To operationalize this purpose, a questionnaire was sent to 655 data analysts and data scientists working in diverse organizations through the professional social network LinkedIn. The questionnaire was based on the theoretical background, consisting of decisio
Fragmentomic analysis of circulating tumor DNA-targeted cancer panels
BACKGROUND: The isolation of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from the bloodstream can be used to detect and analyze somatic alterations in circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), and multiple cfDNA-targeted sequencing panels are now commercially available for Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved biomarker indications to guide treatment. More recently, cfDNA fragmentation patterns have emerged as a tool to inf
A comprehensive review of aluminum gas-phase combustion kinetics in oxygen and steam environments
Aluminum (Al), as a carbon-free energy source and energy carrier, features favorable characteristics regarding its production, transportation, utilization, and recyclability. However, the understanding of Al gas-phase combustion kinetics is still limited. The novelty of this work lies in presenting the first detailed and comprehensive analysis of the Al gas-phase mechanism in the air and steam env
