Streptococcal beta protein has separate binding sites for human factor H and IgA-Fc.

The group B streptococcus (GBS) is the most important cause of life-threatening bacterial infections in newborn infants. Protective immunity to GBS infection is elicited by several surface proteins, one of which, the beta protein, is known to bind human IgA-Fc. Here, we show that the beta protein also binds human factor H (FH), a negative regulator of complement activation. Absorption experiments

The Higher Research Seminar: Kristen Kao, University of Gothenburg - “The Effects of Injustice on Legitimacy in Post-Conflict Settings”

4 mars 2026 13:15 till 14:30 | Seminarium Chair: Jon Polk AbstractIn post-conflict settings, holding perpetrators accountable is widely viewed as essential for restoring the rule of law and rebuilding institutional legitimacy. Yet, justice providing authorities face the challenge of walking a fine line between under- and over-punishment of former enemies: sanctions perceived as too lenient may sig

Regulating Multiple Externalities: The Case of Nordic Fisheries

Open access is a well-known externality problem in fisheries causing excess capacity and overfishing. Due to global warming, externality problems from CO2 emissions have gained increased interest. With two externality problems, a first-best optimum can be achieved by using two regulatory instruments. However, solving the open-access externality problem also affects CO2 emissions. The importance of sunk costs of exporting in risky situations

This paper investigates if the importance of sunk costs differs between markets with different exchange rate risk. First, it examines the importance of sunk costs on the export participation decision by estimating the effect the previous export status has on the current export decision. Second, it analyses the effects of product-market characteristics on the export participation decision. Third, i

En konstruerad verklighet : En kritisk diskursanalys av second hand inom svensk media

Sustainability is a term of significant relevance in today’s global context, permeating discourses and management decisions, and influencing decision-making at the head of most industries. This is particularly apparent in relation to fashion. Second hand clothing is often portrayed as a model towards sustainable consumption, reducing personal environmental impacts while signifying good ethics. Cri

EU:s grundläggande friheter i relation till nationella inkomstskatteregler

The area of direct taxation is, as a consequence of the limited harmonisation within the EU, an area surrounded by several interests that have appeared to be hard to unite. On one hand the EU Member States have the competence in the area of direct taxation to legislate in conformity with their own political considerations. On the other hand the EU law demands conformity with the freedoms regulated

Att prata industripolitik på europeiska

In March 2020 the European Commission put forward a new strategy for Europe's industrial future. The stated goal of the Strategy is to establish a globally competitive and world-leading industry that paves the way for climate neutrality, digital leadership and European strategic autonomy. The aim of this thesis is to broaden the understanding of EU’s industrial policy by analysing how the Comm

Samspel mellan arkitekter och konstruktörer under projekteringen

Contractors who start building based on incomplete documents will always require many costly solutions. The cost to correct mistakes in the beginning of the project is less than the cost to correct mistakes at the end of the project when the admission takes over. Factors that contribute to these large costs are in the planning stage, when transferring information and lack of communication. Verbs of Motion with Directional Prepositions and Prefixes in Xenophon's Anabasis

Popular Abstract in English The present thesis investigates ways in which motion is described in Xenophon’s Anabasis, written in the 2nd part of the third century BC. The Anabasis tells the story of the Ten Thousand – the Greek soldiers who marched from Sardis to Babylon, and from there back to the Greek coast of the Black Sea – covering a great variety of motion events. The study examines passageThe thesis compares different prepositions and verbal prefixes denoting direction in Ancient Greek. The corpus covers passages in Xenophon’s Anabasis where such directional elements are used. In this work, it has been examined how the usage of prepositions differs from that of prefixes when they denote a concrete motion in space, what reasons lie behind their usage, and how various directional ele

A Dipole Model for High Energy QCD

Popular Abstract in English This thesis considers a model of high energy particle collisions. The model is based on the so called BFKL formalism which is valid only at low x, that is collisions at very high energies, such as at the LHC. The intial state of the incoming particles are simulated by colour dipoles in transverse space evolved through rapidity. Investigating the Effects of Negative Affect on Creativity

Prominent research of creativity and affect has historically illuminated the relationship between positive affect and creativity, whereas little is known about the effects- influence of negative affect on creativity. The present study aimed to investigate how negative affect influenced creativity by using a divergent and convergent creativity task. A sample of 54 participants was recruited and ran

Lipid sponge phase nanostructures as carriers for enzymes

Lipids are organic molecules vital for living organisms. They are part of cell membranes and provide an important energy reserve once they are digested by our body. They are most commonly known as fats and oils. Some important so-called polar lipids are amphiphilic molecules, which means they have a head group that is water ‘loving’ (hydrophilic) and a hydrocarbon tail is water ‘hating’ (hydrophobNonlamellar lipid liquid crystalline phases have many potential applications, such as for drug delivery, protein encapsulation or crystallization. Lipid liquid crystalline sponge phase (L3) has so far not been very much considered in these applications, in spite of apparent advantages in terms of its flexibility and capacity of forming large aqueous pores able to encapsulate large bioactive molecu

The Co-Structure Directing Agent (CSDA) Approach to Mesoporous Silica Formation – Exploring the Assembly Characteristics

This thesis is focused on the detail process of formation of mesoporous silica materials.Mesoporous silica materials are one type of porous materials with a pore size between 2 and 5 nm (1 nm=0.000 000 001 m). The pore walls consist of silicon dioxide – silica (sand also consists of silica). The mesoporous silica materials are formed by amphiphilic molecules, a kind of molecule with one part that We investigate the formation mechanism responsible for two specific systems of mesoporous silicas formed with the so-called co-structure directing agent (CSDA) route. The synthesis relies on the interactions between silica source (tetraethylorthosilicate, TEOS), surfactants and CSDA. The structures of the mesoporous silica materials were investigated mainly by small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD),
