Characteristics of laser-triggered electric discharges in air

An experiment of laser-triggered electric discharges has been conducted in a uniform background electric field. By focusing the beam of a pulsed Nd-YAG laser (wavelength 532 nm, pulse duration 5 ns) in a narrow (15 mm) plane-parallel air gap exposed to a dc voltage, streamer discharges and disruptive discharges were triggered.. The laser energy and the background electric field strength were varie

A systemic approach to incorporate sustainability into university courses and curricula

This article is based on an analysis of Lund University that took place during the summer and autumn of 2004 (available for download at www.iiiee.lu.se, click library and publications). The university had experienced a loss of momentum in their progress regarding environmental issues. The purpose of the study was to identify barriers to including sustainability-related content throughout Lund Univ

CD11b(+)/Gr-1(+) immature myeloid cells mediate suppression of T cells in mice bearing tumors of IL-1 beta-secreting cells

Tumor cells secreting IL-1 beta are invasive and metastatic, more than the parental line or control mock-transfected cells, and concomitantly induce in mice general immune suppression of T cell responses. Suppression strongly correlates with accumulation in the peripheral blood and spleen of CD11b(+)/Gr-1(+) immature myeloid cells and hematological alterations, such as splenomegaly, leukocytosis,

Bicuculline, pentobarbital and diazepam modulate spontaneous GABA(A) channels in rat hippocampal neurons

Spontaneously opening, chloride-selective channels that showed outward rectification were recorded in ripped-off patches from rat cultured hippocampal neurons and in cell-attached patches from rat hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons in slices. In both preparations, channels had multiple conductance states and the most common single-channel conductance varied. In the outside-out patches it ranged fro

Triphenylphosphine-substituted selenido and sulfido clusters of osmium derived from Ph3P=Se or Ph3P=S

Cleavage of P=Se bonds occurs readily in the room-temperature treatment of [Os-3(CO) (10)(MeCN)(2)] with Ph3P=Se to give three new compounds, [Os-3(mu(3)-Se)(2)(CO)(8)(PPh3)] (2), [Os-3(mu(3)-Se)( mu(3)-CO)(CO)(7)(PPh3)(2)] (5) and [Os3(mu-OH)(2)(CO)(8)(PPh3)(2)] (6), respectively, and three known compounds, [Os-3(mu(3)-Se)(2)(CO)(9)] (1), [Os-3(mu(3)-Se)(mu-CO)(2)(CO)(7)(PPh3)] (3), and 1,2-[Os-3

Identification of Near-spherical Multiparticle-hole States in 89Tc

Excited states in the nucleus Tc-89 have been identified for the first time by measuring evaporated particle-gamma-gamma-coincidences via the fusion reaction Ni-58 + Ar-36 at 149 MeV. Nine gamma-ray transitions built upon the (9/2+) ground state have been found, reaching up to a probable spin of (33/2+) at 5.3MeV excitation energy. The levels are interpreted with the shell model.

Effects of elevated CO2 and N deposition on CH4 emissions from European mires

[1] Methane fluxes were measured at five sites representing oligotrophic peatlands along a European transect. Five study plots were subjected to elevated CO2 concentration (560 ppm), and five plots to NH4NO3 (3 or 5 g N yr(-1)). The CH4 emissions from the control plots correlated in most cases with the soil temperatures. The depth of the water table, the pH, and the DOC, N and SO4 concentrations w

Tensile properties of a bone cement containing non-ionic contrast media

The addition of contrast media such as BaSO4 or ZrO2 to bone cement has adverse effects in joint replacements, including third body wear and particle-induced bone resorption. Ground PMMA containing particles of the non-ionic water-soluble iodine-based X-ray contrast media, iohexol (IHX) and iodixanol (IDX), has, in bone tissue culture, shown less bone resorption than commercial cements. These wate

Different protein A immunosorbents may have different binding specificity for rat immunoglobulins

Purified polyclonal immunoglobulin preparations representing the 4 rat IgG subclasses were tested for binding to Staphylococcus aureus protein A attached to 3 different solid phases (Staphylococcus aureus Cowan I bacteria, Sepharose CL4B and Sepharose 6MB). Protein A Sepharose CL4B showed higher reactivity with IgG1 and IgG2b than the staphylococci, whereas protein A Sepharose 6MB showed a lower u

Continuous full filling capillary electrochromatography: Nanoparticle synthesis and evaluation

Reversed phase continuous full filling capillary electrochromatography with electrospray ionisation mass spectrometric detection was performed with highly sulphated poly [styrene-co-(lauryl methacrylate)-co-(divinylbenzene)] nanoparticles. The nanoparticles that contained a hydrophobic core and a hydrophilic surface were prepared in a one step synthesis using soap free emulsion polymerisation. By

Can patients at elevated risk of stroke treated with anticoagulants be further risk stratified?

Background and Purpose - Patients with atrial fibrillation have a varied risk of stroke, depending on age and comorbid conditions. The objective of this study was to assess the predictive value of stroke risk classification schemes and to identify patients with atrial fibrillation who are at substantial risk of stroke despite optimal anticoagulant therapy. Methods - Seven recognized classification

Transitional Quadrupole Moments in 83Y

Doppler shift attenuation lifetime measurements have been carried out for the 3qp and isomeric rotational bands in Y-83 using the reaction (Ni(Si,3p))-Ni-58-Si-28. While the transitional quadrupole moments in the 3qp bands are slightly lower than in the 1 qp bands, we found evidence for a strong reduction in \Q(t)\ for the isomeric band.

The Chinese Education Movement in Malaysia

This article explores why and how a minority social movement persists despite persistent constraints placed upon it by a majority-dominated State. The Chinese education movement has been one of the largest, longest, and most sustained social movements in Malaysia. Sociological, economic, and demographic changes of the Chinese community along with domestic political struggles revolving around the e

From Adaptive Capacity to Adaptation: Rethinking the Interface between Institutions and Citizens

There is an increasing consensus that individual adaptive capacities are critical to successfully adapt to climate change and achieve sustainable development. However, little is known about adaptive practices, particularly in developed countries. Against this background, this paper investigates the strategies used by Swedish citizens to adapt to (changing) climatic variability and extremes. It off

High-fidelity readout scheme for rare-earth solid-state quantum computing

We propose and analyze a high-fidelity readout scheme for a single-instance approach to quantum computing in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals. The scheme is based on using different elements as qubit and readout ions, where the readout ions are doped into the material at a much lower concentration than the qubit ions. It is shown that by allowing the qubit ion sitting closest to a readout ion to act

Reversible Conformational Transitions of a Polymer Brush Containing Boronic Acid and its Interaction with Mucin Glycoprotein.

Reversible changes of the height of a polymer brush containing phenylboronic acid were studied. The polymer brush thickness underwent reversible changes of 0.5-1 nm, in response to the changes in composition of the contacting aqueous phase from deionized water to bicarbonate buffer and vice versa, apparently due to the conformational transition of the weak polyelectrolyte to the more extended elec
