Population decline in rural areas is observed in almost every European country. In Croatia, there are no meaningful strategies to mitigate the consequences of depopulation. As a result, many rural communities have already disappeared, while more are becoming unsustainable. Krapina-Zagorje is a region severely impacted by the shrinking and aging of its population. This thesis approaches depopulatio
The aim of the study was to find out how well individuals perform when solving hypothetical causally related problems, and further understand what intelligence factors interact with this. This was done via a survey that consisted of hypothetical, linear relation, causal scenarios. Two experiments were conducted to ensure that no validity issues confounded the results. Experiment 1 consisted of 77
This paper investigates how the American contra Scandinavian prison system relate to prison clothing. Furthermore, it discusses the history of prison uniform and how prison uniform connects to identity. With the end goal of examining whether prison clothing contributes to the ever so nourished discourse, in which clothing is simply described as part of vanity. The research conducted is a direct re
The groundbreaking field of synthetic biology has immense potential to revolutionize our society by reducing our reliance on petroleum. With a growing demand for sustainable ingredients and molecules, companies like Amyris, who have successfully developed and commercialized this technology, are poised to reap significant rewards. I am privileged to work for a scientifically advanced organization t
In the last decade, the topic of political polarization has become a growing concern within academic and public debate. Many highlight the linkage between increased political polarization and democratic problems such as political tribalism and uncivil activism. It is also argued to be a global phenomenon. Despite this, research on political polarization - and its outcome in space (i.e. geographic
The global surge in plastic production, particularly single-use packaging, has triggered pressing environmental and health concerns. Addressing this crisis necessitates transformative shifts within the plastic packaging system, prioritizing the reduction, reuse, and recycling of plastic packaging. The European Union (EU) has initiated a Plastic Strategy to combat the plastic issue. This study eval
Warming in the Arctic occurs at a much higher rate than the global average, which has a considerable impact on the Arctic terrestrial carbon cycle. Permafrost thawing can release substantial amounts of carbon, whilst tundra shrubification and tree-line advance, on the other hand, may compensate for this. To gain a better understanding of the Arctic carbon cycle in the future, global dynamic vegeta
Access to water is taken for granted in water abundant countries like Sweden, but safe water supply is increasingly threatened by droughts. This thesis analyses how the Swedish water sector responded to the unprecedented drought in 2018, by analysing water security discourse through the framework “What’s the problem represented to be?”. It explores implications of the drought on water policy and h
In Sweden, where homogenous production forest makes up the majority of the landscape, there is a need for better understanding of forest fire susceptibility in order to mitigate risk. In the context of this thesis forest fire susceptibility is the likelihood of forest burning after ignition and initial fire propag
Renewable Energy Communities (REC) are seen as a way to promote energy justice and security and advance a democratic, socially-just energy transition. However, energy justice scholarship indicates that some social groups are not included in RECs. I conducted four semi-structured interviews with urban RECs in Germany to find out which communities are underrepresented and why. The feminist energy ju
Neuropsychiatric Symptoms (NPS) have been shown to be associated with Alzheimer's disease ( AD). They negatively affect disease outcome and could play a future role in the detection of prospective AD cases. In the present study we aimed at examining the rel ation between NPS and Amyloid beta ( in both a cognitively healthy N = and cognitively impaired N = 224) dataset from the Swedish BioFINDE
With the evolution of cartography from hand-drawn to digital maps, the task of icon placement has become increasingly complex. Nowadays there is a need to automate this process to produce high quality results in less time. This study aimed to optimize icon placement on city wayfinding maps, addressing challenges of placing icons in high-density areas and maintaining a strong association between ic
This project examines why local materials matter and the main elements to consider when making sustainable designs. Iceland is heavily relying on import because of the scarcity of raw natural local materials. In the main natural materials require less energy and water use as they are less processed and consequently become a more sustainable choice. However importing natural materials significa
Examining the relationship between personality and positive psychology can when using a standard measure of personality produce spurious correlations, due to socially desirable responding (aka the evaluative factor). In this study Big Five measures of personality were related to the five most common measures of positive psychology. Using both an evaluative and an evaluatively neutralised measure o
