The three-gender system in two varieties of Jämtlandic∗ Briana Van Epps, Lund University Abstract. This is a study on the gender system of the Swedish dialect spoken in Jämtland, a province in northern Sweden. The Jämtlandic dialect preserves to a large extent the three- gender system that was present in Old Swedish. The three-gender system manifests in anaphoric pronouns and as agreement in the n

Old Europe, New Europe, Non Europe Reshaping the European Union at the Beginning of the 21st Century Lund University summer course 2010 In the new millennium the EU has faced a number of challenges. First, the integration of the twelve new member states has been a troublesome affair. Second, EU’s relations to its neighbours (e.g. Russia & Turkey) remain a topic splitting the member states. Mild Hypercapnia or Normocapnia after Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest

Abstract Background Guidelines recommend normocapnia for adults with coma who are resuscitated after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. However, mild hypercapnia increases cerebral blood flow and may improve neurologic outcomes. Methods We randomly assigned adults with coma who had been resuscitated after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest of presumed cardiac or unknown cause and admitted to the intensiv

Wave packet dynamics and control in excited states of molecular nitrogen

Wave packet interferometry with vacuum ultraviolet light has been used to probe a complex region of the electronic spectrum of molecular nitrogen, N2. Wave packets of Rydberg and valence states were excited by using double pulses of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), free-electron-laser (FEL) light. These wave packets were composed of contributions from multiple electronic states with a moderate principal

A multi-ancestry genome-wide association study of umbilical cord insulin and c-peptide levels will form the basis of an important future bioresource

Aims: Fetal insulin is a key regulator of fetal growth and the major contributor to high birth weight in pregnancies with maternal diabetes. There is evidence for genetic variation in regulating fetal insulin, but this has not been studied on a large-scale. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of umbilical cord insulin and c-peptide measurements to identify genetic variants associat

Antibodies to Costimulatory Receptor 4-1BB Enhance Anti-tumor Immunity via T Regulatory Cell Depletion and Promotion of CD8 T Cell Effector Function

The costimulatory receptor 4-1BB is expressed on activated immune cells, including activated T cells. Antibodies targeting 4-1BB enhance the proliferation and survival of antigen-stimulated T cells in vitro and promote CD8 T cell-dependent anti-tumor immunity in pre-clinical cancer models. We found that T regulatory (Treg) cells infiltrating human or murine tumors expressed high amounts of 4-1BB.

Toward Highlighting the Ultrafast Electron Transfer Dynamics at the Optically Dark Sites of Photocatalysts

Building a detailed understanding of the structure function relationship is a crucial step in the optimization of molecular photocatalysts employed in water splitting schemes. The optically dark nature of their active sites usually prevents a complete mapping of the photoinduced dynamics. In this work, transient X-ray absorption spectroscopy highlights the electronic and geometric changes that aff

The Scriptures and the LORD : Formation and Significance of the Christian Biblical Canon. A Study in Text, Ritual and Interpretation

This study explores the emergence of the Christian biblical canon and its significance for the early as well as for the contemporary church. Some major challenges to previous research on the biblical canon are presented. The apostolic formula "the Scriptures and the Lord" is defended as a good summary of the Christian canon, its formation and significance. It is argued that the canon was formed i

The K2-HERMES Survey. I. Planet-candidate Properties from K2 Campaigns 1-3

Accurate and precise radius estimates of transiting exoplanets are critical for understanding their compositions and formation mechanisms. To know the planet, we must know the host star in as much detail as possible. We present first results from the K2-HERMES project, which uses the HERMES multi-object spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope to obtain R ∼ 28000 spectra of up to 360 stars i

Impact of month of birth on the development of autoimmune thyroid disease in the United Kingdom and Europe

CONTEXT: Viral/bacterial infection is proposed as a trigger for the autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD): Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). Previous studies in European Caucasian AITD subjects found higher birth rates in the autumn/winter, suggesting those born in the autumn/winter experience increased viral/bacterial exposure after birth, impacting upon immune system developmen

Cancer and Risk of COVID-19 Through a General Community Survey

Individuals with cancer may be at high risk for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and adverse outcomes. However, evidence from large population-based studies examining whether cancer and cancer-related therapy exacerbates the risk of COVID-19 infection is still limited. Data were collected from the COVID Symptom Study smartphone application since March 29 through May 8, 2020. Among 23,266 partic

Vaccines and allergic reactions : The past, the current COVID-19 pandemic, and future perspectives

Vaccines are essential public health tools with a favorable safety profile and prophylactic effectiveness that have historically played significant roles in reducing infectious disease burden in populations, when the majority of individuals are vaccinated. The COVID-19 vaccines are expected to have similar positive impacts on health across the globe. While serious allergic reactions to vaccines ar

Time-resolved photoelectron imaging of complex resonances in molecular nitrogen

We have used the FERMI free-electron laser to perform time-resolved photoelectron imaging experiments on a complex group of resonances near 15.38 eV in the absorption spectrum of molecular nitrogen, N2, under jet-cooled conditions. The new data complement and extend the earlier work of Fushitani et al. [Opt. Express 27, 19702–19711 (2019)], who recorded time-resolved photoelectron spectra for this

Environmental, geographical and time-related impacts on avian malaria infections in native and introduced populations of house sparrows (Passer domesticus), a globally invasive species

Aim: The increasing spread of vector-borne diseases has resulted in severe health concerns for humans, domestic animals and wildlife, with changes in land use and the introduction of invasive species being among the main possible causes for this increase. We explored several ecological drivers potentially affecting the local prevalence and richness of avian malaria parasite lineages in native and

K2-137 b : An Earth-sized planet in a 4.3-h orbit around an M-dwarf

We report the discovery in K2's Campaign 10 of a transiting terrestrial planet in an ultrashort- period orbit around an M3-dwarf. K2-137 b completes an orbit in only 4.3 h, the second shortest orbital period of any known planet, just 4 min longer than that of KOI 1843.03, which also orbits an M-dwarf. Using a combination of archival images, adaptive optics imaging, radial velocity measurements, an

Paclitaxel-coated versus uncoated devices for infrainguinal endovascular revascularisation in patients with intermittent claudication (SWEDEPAD 2) : a multicentre, participant-masked, registry-based, randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND: Drug-coated devices are widely used to reduce restenosis after lower limb revascularisation in patients with peripheral artery disease, but their effect on patient-centred outcomes remains unclear. We assessed the effect of paclitaxel-coated devices on clinically important outcomes in patients with intermittent claudication undergoing infrainguinal endovascular revascularisation.METHOD

Radiological signs of hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy on head computed tomography for prediction of poor functional outcome after cardiac arrest – a prospective observational cohort study

Introduction: Qualitative assessment of hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy on computed tomography (CT) after cardiac arrest is limited by interrater agreement. We explored how qualitative assessment can be improved. Methods: In-depth analysis of radiological items evaluated in a prospective sub-study within the Targeted Hypothermia versus Targeted Normothermia after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (T
