The stellar populations of the M31 halo substructure

We present the first results from our survey of stellar substructure in the outskirts of M31 using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. We discuss the stellar populations associated with five prominent stellar overdensities discovered during the course of our panoramic ground-based imaging survey with the Isaac Newton Telescope Wide-Field Camera; a sixth pointing ta

Determination of NO adsorption sites on Pd(100) using core level photoemission and low energy electron diffraction

The adsorption of NO on Pd(1 0 0) is investigated with high resolution core level spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Several ordered NO overlayers were observed, in agreement with earlier Studies. Our data clearly show that NO adsorbs in fourfold hollow sites at coverages tip to 0.25 -0.30 monolayer (ML) whereas at 0.5 ML only bridge sites are occupied. By a reinterpretation

Are digital images good enough? A comparative study of conventional film-screen vs digital radiographs on printed images of total hip replacement.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the inter- and intra-observer variability and to find differences in diagnostic safety between digital and analog technique in diagnostic zones around hip prostheses. In 80 patients who had had a total hip replacement (THR) for more than 2 years, a conventional image and a digital image were taken. Gruen's model of seven distinct regions of interest was used f

The use of phospholipid and neutral lipid fatty acids to estimate biomass of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in soil

Cucumber seedlings associated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi Glomus WUM10 or G. caledanium (BEG 15) were grown in PVC tubes with a lateral root-free compartment and an identical compartment containing both hyphae and roots. The amounts of specific fatty acids, in the neutral lipid and phospholipid fractions, were measured in both compartments and compared with controls without mycorrhi

Local Flip Angle Correction for Improved Volume T1-Quantification in Three-Dimensional dGEMRIC Using the Look-Locker Technique

Purpose: To present an evaluation method for three-dimensional Look-Locker (3D-LL) based T1 quantification, calculating correct T1 values independent of local flip angle (FA) variations. The method was evaluated both in phantoms and in vivo in a delayed Gadolinium Enhanced MRI of Cartilage (dGEMRIC) study with 33 subjects. Materials and Methods: T1 was measured with 3D-LL, using both local FA corr

A repetitive sequence of Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen 6 comprises overlapping T cell epitopes which induce HLA-DR-restricted CD4(+) T lymphocytes

Most human adults carry the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and develop immunological memory against the structural and the virus-encoded cellular proteins. The EBV nuclear antigen 6 (EBNA6) elicits cytotoxic T cell responses and it also maintains a persistent antibody response. The majority of sera from EBV-seropositive individuals reacts with a synthetic peptide, p63, comprising 21 amino acids of a rep

Wake structure and wingbeat kinematics of a house-martin Delichon urbica

The wingbeat kinematics and wake structure of a trained house martin in free, steady flight in a wind tunnel have been studied over a range of flight speeds, and compared and contrasted with similar measurements for a thrush nightingale and a pair of robins. The house martin has a higher aspect ratio (more slender) wing, and is a more obviously agile and aerobatic flyer, catching insects on the wi

Transatlantic registries of pancreatic surgery in the United States of America, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden : Comparing design, variables, patients, treatment strategies, and outcomes

Background: Registries of pancreatic surgery have become increasingly popular as they facilitate both quality improvement and clinical research. We aimed to compare registries for design, variables collected, patient characteristics, treatment strategies, clinical outcomes, and pathology. Methods: Registered variables and outcomes of pancreatoduodenectomy (2014–2017) in 4 nationwide or multicenter

Impact of α-synuclein pathology on transplanted hESC-derived dopaminergic neurons in a humanized α-synuclein rat model of PD

Preclinical assessment of the therapeutic potential of dopamine (DA) neuron replacement in Parkinson's disease (PD) has primarily been performed in the 6-hydroxydopamine toxin model. While this is a good model to assess graft function, it does not reflect the pathological features or progressive nature of the disease. In this study, we establish a humanized transplantation model of PD that better

Experiments on Belief Formation in Networks

We study belief formation in social networks using a laboratory experiment. Participants in our experiment observe an imperfect private signal on the state of the world and then simultaneously and repeatedly guess the state, observing the guesses of their network neighbors in each period. Across treatments we vary the network structure and the amount of information participants have about the netw

Space complexity in polynomial calculus

During the last 10 to 15 years, an active line of research in proof complexity has been to study space complexity and time-space trade-offs for proofs. Besides being a natural complexity measure of intrinsic interest, space is also an important concern in SAT solving, and so research has mostly focused on weak systems that are used by SAT solvers. There has been a relatively long sequence of paper

Geophysical investigation of glass ‘hotspots’ in glass dumps as potential secondary raw material sources

This study investigates the potential for Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) to detect buried glass ‘hotspots’ in a glass waste dump based on results from an open glass dump investigated initially. This detection potential is vital for excavation and later use of buried materials as secondary resources. After ERT, test pits (TPs) were excavated around suspected glass hotspots and physico-chem

The hot dayside and asymmetric transit of WASP-189 b seen by CHEOPS

The CHEOPS space mission dedicated to exoplanet follow-up was launched in December 2019, equipped with the capacity to perform photometric measurements at the 20 ppm level. As CHEOPS carries out its observations in a broad optical passband, it can provide insights into the reflected light from exoplanets and constrain the short-wavelength thermal emission for the hottest of planets by observing oc
