Observation of elastic scattering effects on photoelectron angular distributions in free Xe clusters

We report an observation of substantial deviations in the photoelectron angular distribution for photoionization of atoms in free Xe clusters compared to the case of photoionization of free atoms. The cross section, however, seems not to vary between the cluster and free atoms. This observation was made in the vicinity of the Xe 4d Cooper minimum, where the atomic angular distribution is known to

Iron-related luminescence centers in ZnWO4 : Fe

A systematic spectroscopic study of single ZnWO4 :Fe crystals with different iron concentrations has been performed under excitation by ultraviolet light, by synchrotron radiation or under photostimulation by near-infrared light. The luminescence of Fe3+-related centres has been studied. It is shown that iron centres of different types efficiently promote the formation of crystal defects at low te

A proposal to estimate homogeneous and inhomogeneous energy level broadening in double barrier resonant tunneling diodes

In this paper we proposed a method for evaluating a homogeneous broadening (DeltaE(h)) and inhomogeneous broadening (DeltaE(i)) of the resonant energy level width independently by using current-voltage characteristics in double barrier resonant tunneling diodes (DBRTDs). The line shape of the resonant energy broadening is assumed as a convolution of Lorentz function and a Gauss function. Measured

Missense mutations affecting a conserved cysteine pair in the TH domain of Btk

Tec family protein tyrosine kinases have in their N-terminus two domains, The PH domain is followed by Tec homology (TH) domain, which consists of two motifs, The first pattern, Btk motif, is also present in some Pas GAP molecules, C-terminal half of the TH domain, a proline-rich region, has been shown to bind to SH3 domains, Mutations in Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) belonging to the Tec family

Stable hydrogen pair trapped at carbon impurities in silicon

Local mode spectroscopy and ab initio modeling are used to investigate two trigonal defects found in carbon rich Si into which H had been in-diffused. Isotopic shifts with D and C-13 are reported along with the effect of uniaxial stress. Ab-initio modeling studies suggest that the two defects are two forms of the CH2* complex where one of the two hydrogen atoms lies at an anti-bonding site attache

Cyclic AMP-specific and cyclic GMP-specific phosphodiesterase isoenzymes in human cavernous arteries - immunohistochemical distribution and functional significance

Objectives: It has been well established that male erectile dysfunction is frequently associated with vascular diseases. The normal function of cavernous arteries is considered a prerequisite to maintain sufficient blood flow to the trabecular spaces in order to enable penile erection. Contractility of cavernous arteries is regulated by the peripheral autonomic nervous system and endogenous factor

Imatinib mesylate is effective in children with chronic myelogenous leukemia in late chronic and advanced phase and in relapse after stem cell transplantation

A multicentric phase 2 study was conducted to determine the efficiency and the tolerance of imatinib mesylate in children with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in advanced phase of the disease, in relapse after stem cell transplantation, or in case of failure to an interferon a-based regimen. In all, 30 children from eight European countries were enrolled. In 18 children assessable for hematolog

Peripheral antioxidant markers are associated with total hippocampal and CA3/dentate gyrus volume in MDD and healthy controls-preliminary findings.

Several psychiatric disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD), are associated with increased blood markers of oxidative stress. The relevance of this to the oxidation-sensitive hippocampus (HC) is unknown. We investigated the relationship between peripheral oxidative stress markers and HC volume in unmedicated individuals with MDD (n=16) and healthy controls (n=19). To conserve power, o

Fine Mapping of the Interaction between C4b-Binding Protein and Outer Membrane Proteins LigA and LigB of Pathogenic Leptospira interrogans.

The complement system consists of more than 40 proteins that participate in the inflammatory response and in pathogen killing. Complement inhibitors are necessary to avoid the excessive consumption and activation of this system on host cells. Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonosis caused by spirochetes from the genus Leptospira. Pathogenic leptospires are able to escape from complement activation b

Reduction of gain and time constant of vestibulo-ocular reflex in man induced by diazepam and thiopental

The effect of intravenous administration of two sedatives, diazepam (0.3 mg/kg) and thiopental (6.0 mg/kg), on the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in man was investigated on 9 volunteers. The VOR was evoked with a velocity step rotation test and gain and time constant of prerotatory and postrotatory nystagmus were measured. Both drugs reduced VOR gain. Diazepam-induced reduction lasted 8 h and thiop

The FAK-Arp2/3 interaction promotes leading edge advance and haptosensing by coupling nascent adhesions to lamellipodia actin

Cell migration is initiated in response to biochemical or physical cues in the environment that promote actin-mediated lamellipodial protrusion followed by the formation of nascent integrin adhesions (NAs) within the protrusion to drive leading edge advance. Although FAK is known to be required for cell migration through effects on focal adhesions, its role in NA formation and lamellipodial dynami

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis of normal and torn rotator-cuff tendons

We have used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to characterise the chemical and structural composition of the tendons of the rotator cuff and to identify structural differences among anatomically distinct tears. Such information may help to identify biomarkers of tears and to provide insight into the rates of healing of different sizes of tear. The infrared spectra of 81 partial, smal

Can the survival difference between breast cancer patients in Denmark and Sweden 1989 and 1994 be explained by patho-anatomical variables? - A population-based study

Analyses of data from cancer registries have shown a 10% unit difference in 5-year relative survival between Danish and Swedish patients with breast cancer. This study investigates the effect of age and patho-anatomic variables on this survival difference. Hospital records were collected for women over 40 years of age diagnosed in 1989 or 1994 in east Denmark and south Sweden; patho-anatomical var

Volumetric intensity dependence on the formation of molecular and atomic ions within a high intensity laser focus

The mechanism of atomic and molecular ionization in intense, ultra-short laser fields is a subject which continues to receive considerable attention. An inherent difficulty with techniques involving the tight focus of a laser beam is the continuous distribution of intensities contained within the focus, which can vary over several orders of magnitude. The present study adopts time of flight mass s

Mechanical reliability of the Jarvik 2000 Heart - Discussion

Background. Device failure is a limitation of permanent mechanical circulatory support. We studied the mechanical reliability of the Jarvik 2000 Heart, an axial flow pump with ceramic bearings designed to provide more than 10 years' durability. Methods. The Jarvik 2000 Heart was implanted in 102 patients between April 2000 and December 2004. Eighty-three pumps with an abdominal driveline were impl

Frontotemporal dementia linked to chromosome 3

A large pedigree with autosomal dominant frontotemporal dementia has been identified. Positional cloning has linked the disease gene to the pericentromeric region of chromosome 3. Clinical, neuropsychological, imaging, pathological and molecular genetic data are presented. The genetic mutation responsible for the disease has not been identified.

Monitoring the bioavailability of FEIBA with a thrombin generation assay

Background: Hemophilia A patients with inhibitors are generally treated with preparations containing activated coagulation factors to achieve hemostasis by bypassing factor (F)VIII. Objectives: We developed an assay for monitoring the kinetic of thrombin generation in human FVIII inhibitor plasma reconstituted in vitro with activated prothrombin complex concentrate, FEIBA, and in plasma samples fr
