The Evolving Heritagescape: Actors and Narratives in Xinye village

The threat to the rural heritage has since the 1990s become a concern for Chinesescholars and heritage experts. Today many individual buildings and whole villageshave been listed as protected sites at different levels. But long before experts began totake an interest, villagers were themselves actively involved in protecting their owntraditions and the buildings of importance to the community (in

Why European and United States drug regulators are not speaking with one voice on anti-influenza drugs: regulatory review methodologies and the importance of 'deep' product reviews

BackgroundRelenza represents the first neuraminidase inhibitor (NI), a class of drugs that also includes the drug Tamiflu. Although heralded as breakthrough treatments in influenza, NI efficacy has remained highly controversial. A key unsettled question is why the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved more cautious efficacy statements in labelling than European regulators f

The use of the nest for parental roosting and thermal consequences of the nest for nestlings and parents

At temperate latitudes, altricial birds and their nestlings need to handle night temperatures well below thermoneutrality during the breeding season. Thus, energy costs of thermoregulation might constrain nestling growth, and low nocturnal temperatures might require resources that parents could otherwise have invested into nestlings during the day. Carelessness or Curatorial Chutzpah? : Controversies Surrounding Street Art in the Museum

My paper discussed two controversies surrounding the exhibition Art in the Streets, which was shown at the MOCA in Los Angeles April 17th - August 8th 2011. One focal point was the reaction of conservative American commentators to the exhibition in general; another the reactions of agents within the street art world to the removal of one specific artwork. Contrary to the session chairs’ suggesti

Krävs både dominans och konkurrensskada för att stoppa företagskoncentrationer?

Abstract in Undetermined Continental Can-domen uppfattades som omvälvande, men när jag trettio år senare läser om domsskälen är det slående hur brett formulerade de är. I slutet av sitt principiella resonemang, som förklarar varför även strukturella förändringar kan bli föremål för ingrepp, uttalar EG-domstolen: (27) … for the strengthening of the position of an undertaking may be an abuse and pro

Nurses’ refusals of patient involvement in their own palliative care

Background: Ideas of patient involvement are related to notions of self-determination and autonomy, which are not always in alignment with complex interactions and communication in clinical practice.Aim: To illuminate and discuss patient involvement in routine clinical care situations in nursing practice from an ethical perspective.Method: A case study based on an anthropological field study amongBackground:Ideas of patient involvement are related to notions of self-determination and autonomy, which are not always in alignment with complex interactions and communication in clinical practice.Aim:To illuminate and discuss patient involvement in routine clinical care situations in nursing practice from an ethical perspective.Method:A case study based on an anthropological field study among pa

Evaluation of a feedback control method for hydronic heating systems based on indoor temperature measurements

Indoor temperatures in apartment blocks are often indirectly controlled by the outdoor temperature using a feedforward control loop, in which the radiator supply temperature is a function of the outdoor tem- perature. However, this control principle cannot take into account heat gains or losses caused by tenants, electrical appliances, the sun, air leakage, etc., which may result in uneven indoor Indoor temperatures in apartment blocks are often indirectly controlled by the outdoor temperature using a feedforward control loop, in which the radiator supply temperature is a function of the outdoor temperature. FREE MOVEMENT OF GOODS - QUANTITATIVE RESTRICTIONS - IN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY AND THE ASEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY

My thesis consists of three main parts. The first part, Chapter 2, describes the legal framework regulating free movement of goods, with the focus on quantitative restrictions in the EC. The starting point of this chapter is the current approach to harmonization in completing the internal market. This section considers the limits of economic integration prior to 1986 and the important steps taken

Entering Europe: The Making of a Single European Policy on Asylum and Immigration

If human rights are to be enjoyed by every person regardless of origin or nationality; if human rights are the rights of the human being under any circumstances, then the best way to gauge the quality and depth of our systems of protection of human rights will be to examine the extent to which these are enjoyed by their most genuine recipients: those deprived of wealth and citizenship, a home and

The right to strike

This essay is a comparison of the American and the Swedish labor law systems regarding the right to strike. American unions generally have a tougher time than Swedish unions to get by. Not only do they have to fight the employers, the federal government does not give much support either and the union dislike is widely spread amongst the population. This goes back all the way to the beginning of th

Trivial Software Patents

Computer programs are excluded subject matter ''as such'' under the EPC. However, once ''technical character'' can be established in a software invention, and it fulfills all the requirements for patentability - being an invention, which is novel, has inventive step and is industrially applicable - software is very much patentable. The technical character requiremen

Association Between Preoperative Opioid and Benzodiazepine Prescription Patterns and Mortality After Noncardiac Surgery

IMPORTANCE: The number of patients prescribed long-term opioids and benzodiazepines and complications from their long-term use have increased. Information regarding the perioperative outcomes of patients prescribed these medications before surgery is limited.OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients prescribed opioids and/or benzodiazepines within 6 months preoperatively would have greater short- a

Steel decarbonisation in the early 21st century : Innovation, clean power and modern industrial policy

The global steel industry is a complex socio-technical system of strategicimportance, producing close to 10 percent of global emissions. Decarbonizing thissystem will significantly impact energy use, supply chain configurations, andinternational competitiveness, with geopolitical implications. Governments acrossthe world are therefore turning towards industrial policy to accelerate atransformation

The article takes its point of departure in a contemporary Scandinavian literary debate regarding the function and possible societal impact of climate-oriented poetry and prose. Against the ecocentric, anti-modernist and anti-formalist tenets dominating this debate, Friis and Thomsen want to examine how the formal aspects of literary texts might be relevant for ecocritical work. Through critical d

Pyrotechnically Generated Aerosols ability to extinguish cable fires

This study aimed to evaluate the use of Pyrotechnically Generated Aerosols in electrical fires. To represent a common starting point for these fires, a cable fire ignited by a shortcut was chosen. In order to do this in a realistic way, a new method with heating the cables from the inside was used. This study examined whether the PGA has the ability to supress a cable fire inside an electrical cab
