TOI-2046b, TOI-1181b, and TOI-1516b, three new hot Jupiters from TESS : planets orbiting a young star, a subgiant, and a normal star

We present the confirmation and characterization of three hot Jupiters, TOI-1181b, TOI-1516b, and TOI-2046b, discovered by the TESS space mission. The reported hot Jupiters have orbital periods between 1.4 and 2.05 d. The masses of the three planets are 1.18 ± 0.14 MJ, 3.16 ± 0.12 MJ, and 2.30 ± 0.28 MJ, for TOI-1181b, TOI-1516b, and TOI-2046b, respectively. The stellar host of TOI-1181b is a F9IV

Real time monitoring of whey foulants adsorption on polyethersulfone surface

The worldwide growing demand for whey proteins and derivatives requires more efficient and sustainable whey protein production processes. Whey is an important by-product from cheese manufacturing. In whey industry membrane processes such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis are well-established to concentrate, fractionate and purify whey proteins as well as whey

Unraveling the World’s Longest Non-stop Migration : The Indian Ocean Crossing of the Globe Skimmer Dragonfly

Insect migration redistributes enormous quantities of biomass, nutrients and species globally. A subset of insect migrants perform extreme long-distance journeys, requiring specialized morphological, physiological and behavioral adaptations. The migratory globe skimmer dragonfly (Pantala flavescens) is hypothesized to migrate from India across the Indian Ocean to East Africa in the autumn, with a

Preserved periprosthetic bone stock at 5 years post-operatively with uncemented short hip stem in both collared and collarless version

Introduction: Previous bone density studies have generally shown bone resorption around both cemented and uncemented total hip arthroplasty (THA) stems. This is presumed to be due to stress shielding. Short stems have been introduced partly to preserve bone in the proximal femur by a more physiological loading of the bone. The purpose of this study was to evaluate bone remodeling around a short, f

Encounters involving planetary systems in birth environments : The significant role of binaries

Most stars form in a clustered environment. Both single and binary stars will sometimes encounter planetary systems in such crowded environments. Encounter rates for binaries may be larger than for single stars, even for binary fractions as low as 10-20 per cent. In this work, we investigate scatterings between a Sun-Jupiter pair and both binary and single stars as in young clusters. We first perfo

A Simple Model for Harmonics in Electrical Distribution Networks

A modularized approach to modeling of harmonics in electrical distribution networks at steady state is presented. It is based on harmonic balance and exploits that the loads in a distribution network are connected in parallel in such a way that their operating conditions are approximately known in advance (e.g. 230 V, 50 Hz) and the harmonic distortion of the voltage is limited. The model for a co

A finite deformation continuum modelling framework for curvature effects in fibre-reinforced nanocomposites

Motivated by experimental findings on one-dimensional nano-materials, this contribution focusses on the elaboration of a fibre curvature based higher-order gradient contribution to the stored energy function in a finite deformation setting. The presented approach is based on the fundamental theoretical developments for fibre-reinforced composites presented by Spencer and Soldatos (2007), which tak

Sources of dietary gluten in the first two years of life and associations with celiac disease autoimmunity and celiac disease in Swedish genetically predisosed children: : TEDDY study

BackgroundHigh gluten intake is associated with increased risk of celiac disease (CD) in children at genetic risk.ObjectivesTo investigate if different dietary gluten sources up to age two years confer different risks of celiac disease autoimmunity (CDA) and CD in children at genetic risk.DesignThree-day food records were collected at age six, nine, 12, 18 and 24 months from 2088 Swedish genetical

Where did the finch go? Insights from radio telemetry of the medium ground finch (Geospiza fortis)

Movement patterns and habitat selection of animals have important implications for ecology and evolution. Darwin's finches are a classic model system for ecological and evolutionary studies, yet their spatial ecology remains poorly studied. We tagged and radio-tracked five (three females, two males) medium ground finches (Geospiza fortis) to examine the feasibility of telemetry for understanding t

Smart Specialization as an Innovation-Driven Strategy for Economic Diversification : Examples From Scandinavian Regions

This chapter provides conceptual and empirical foundations for smart specialization, a policy approach of far-reaching importance in the European context. We interpret the very notion as “diversified” specialization into areas of existing or potential competitive advantage, which differentiates a region/nation from others. “Smart” relates to the identification of these areas through a process of e

Future-Oriented Methodologies for Sustainability

Both in the social and natural sciences, methodologies have been developed to deal with relatively stable conditions, where findings can be validated based on past experiences. At a time when both social and natural phenomena are rapidly changing, new approaches are urgently needed to produce knowledge for systemic change, inform high-stakes decisions, and enable sustainability transitions in the

Collaborative housing as a socio-spatial system from a critical realism perspective. Can unintended consequences be understood as causal mechanisms?

Holism, abduction and causality are ways of reasoning that can complement each other to enable better understanding of contemporary wicked problems. Current social challenges include a global housing crisis, unwanted isolation and polarized societies. Systems thinking is instrumental to zoom out a specific phenomenon in an attempt to capture the complexity of reality. It also provides a holistic v

Analysis of time delays in synchronous and asynchronous control loops

In this paper we describe how to determine the time delays caused by synchronous and asynchronous control loops. These time delays can vary in a quite irregular way and can cause problems for the control loops closed over a communication network of, for instance, field-buses. Different setups allowing an arbitrary number of communication layers are analyzed. The theoretical derivations are illustr

Visible chemiluminescence of ammonia premixed flames and its application for flame diagnostics

We report a spatially resolved spectroscopic study of the visible chemiluminescence emission from different premixed ammonia-air-oxygen flames stabilized on a laminar flat flame burner, with equivalence ratio ranging from 0.7 to 1.35 and an O2/N2 ratio of 0.4. In the reaction zone of the observed flames, the visible emission was recognized to be the chemiluminescence of excited NH2* radicals, whil

Trauma-analogue symptom variability predicted by inhibitory control and peritraumatic heart rate

The reasons why some individuals who experience trauma develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) while others do not remain poorly understood, highlighting the complex interplay of encoding-related and intrapersonal factors. This study aimed to examine factors predicting variability in trauma-related symptom development. Using a trauma-film paradigm in a healthy sample (N = 32), we investigate
