New thesis highlights sustainable solutions to protect the Amazon rainforest

In the Colombian rainforest, cattle ranching is spreading and leading to forest fires and deforestation. This threatens the environment, climate and indigenous people in the Amazon. More efficient use of existing pastures and alternative livelihoods are some of the factors needed to protect the rainforest, according to a new thesis by Jesica López. Colombia's rainforest is part of the Amazon and i

Searching for an 'off switch' for cancer

Nicholas Leigh came from the United States to Sweden and Lund University four years ago to study salamanders and how they can regenerate everything from legs, tails and even parts of the heart. In addition to his research, he has also been advocating for more inclusive research environments. It was the ability of moose to grow new antlers after shedding that first sparked Nicholas Leigh’s interest

Drones offer new insights into boreal peatland CO2 emissions

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. Boreal peatlands store large amounts of carbon, but warmer and drier conditions caused by climate change may turn these ecosystems into carbon sources. Equipped with drones and thermal cameras Julia Kelly, who recently received her doctorate at the Centre for Environmental and Climate Science (CEC), has studied what f

Nocturnal pollinators just as important as their daytime colleagues

For over 60 years, scientists have tried to determine whether plants are pollinated primarily during the day or at night — without reaching a clear conclusion. Now, a major research review from Lund University in Sweden has revealed that nighttime pollinators play just as significant a role as daytime species in 90 percent of the cases studied. Most of us know how important bees, birds, and butter

Ingrid Wernstedt Asterholm receives the Leif C. Groop award for research on adipose tissue

This year's recipient of the Leif C. Groop Award for Outstanding Diabetes Research maps out mechanisms in the adipose tissue, which has increased the understanding of why some people with obesity develop type 2 diabetes. Ingrid Wernstedt Asterholm at University of Gothenburg is spurred to find new answers when observations in the lab do not agree with the general view. Justification for awarding"I

Should the state pay for climate class action litigation?

In Sweden, class actions - such as the ongoing Aurora case, where 300 young people are suing the government for failing to implement climate policies - are rare. Too rare, according to the sociologist of law Michael Molavi. He argues that Sweden would benefit from more class actions and that the state should finance the legal costs. On 21 March, Nacka District Court announced that the youth group

The resource curse in new light: research findings on fiscal policy in Andean and Nordic countries

Nordic and Andean countries started their economic modernisation in the same way: with export of raw natural resources. Later on, Norway and Sweden became rich, while Bolivia, Chile and Peru followed a quite different path. What made them diverge from the common road? Different fiscal policies may be one of the reasons, new research from Lund University suggests. In the mid-19th century, Norway ex
