Von Economo neurons are selectively targeted in frontotemporal dementia.

Von Economo neurons (VEN) are bipolar neurons located in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the frontoinsular cortex (FI), areas affected early in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), in which VEN may constitute a selectively vulnerable cellular population. Aim A previous study has shown a selective loss of VEN in FTD above other neurons in the ACC of FTD. The aim of this stud

Application of supercritical carbon dioxide for the extraction of alkylresorcinols from rye bran

The use of supercritical CO, (SC-CO2) for extracting alkylresorcinols from rye bran was investigated. For pure SC-CO2, 35 MPa and 55 degrees C were used. SC-CO2 with 10% ethanol or methanol as co-solvents was tested at four pressure levels (8, 15, 30 and 35 MPa) and two temperatures (40 and 55 degrees C). Experiments were conducted at a constant SC-CO2 flow of 5 g/min for 2 h. For comparative purp

Evidence of increasing functional differentiation in pottery use among Late Holocene maritime foragers in northern Japan

Hamanaka 2 is a multi-phase coastal site in Rebun Island with a ~ 3000-year occupation sequence extending from the final-stage Jōmon and Okhotsk to the Ainu Culture period (1050 BCE-1850 CE). To examine long-term trends in food processing at the site, we collected 66 ceramic sherds across six distinct cultural layers from the Final Jōmon to the Late Okhotsk period for lipid residue analysis. A novel mutation (N233K) in the transactivating domain and the N756S mutation in the ligand binding domain of the androgen receptor gene are associated with male infertility

OBJECTIVE: Resistance to androgens has been suggested as a possible cause of male infertility. This hypothesis is based mainly on binding studies in genital skin fibroblasts but the molecular evidence is sparse. DESIGN: Molecular studies of the androgen receptor gene were performed in 10 azoo- or oligozoospermic men, precenting with clinical signs of low androgen activity - poor virilization and h

Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy –a controversial treatment for bile duct and gallbladder cancer from a European perspective

Background: Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy (HPD) is an aggressive operation for treatment of advanced bile duct and gallbladder cancer associated with high perioperative morbidity and mortality, and uncertain oncological benefit in terms of survival. Few reports on HPD from Western centers exist. The purpose of this study was to evaluate safety and efficacy for HPD in European centers. Method: Member
