Aims The Trump movement displays several key features of a populist movement with a strong leader and a broad unorganized base of followers opposed to a per-ceived liberal elite establishment. In 2024, Trump gained strong support from strata with low income, low education and Hispanic men, previously not strong support-ers of Republicans. This study investigates the preconditions for a populist mo

Tumor hypoxia plays a critical role in cancer progression and therapeutic resistance. Here, we present a protocol for the self-generation of hypoxia by metastatic cancer cells using phosphorescence-based O2 sensing. We describe steps for phosphorescent film calibration, system assembly, and real-time imaging of hypoxia development. We then detail approaches to spatially map resulting O2 gradients.

The timing and connections between global cooling, marine redox conditions, and biotic turnover are underconstrained for the Late Ordovician. The second most severe mass extinction occurred at the end of the Ordovician period, resulting in ~85% loss of marine species between two extinction pulses. As the only “Big 5” extinction that occurred during icehouse conditions, this interval is an importan

Aquatic organisms are constantly at risk of being exposed to potentially harmful chemical compounds of natural or anthropogenic origin. Biological life can for instance respond to chemical stressors by changes in gene expression, and thus, certain gene transcripts can potentially function as biomarkers, i.e. early warnings, of toxicity and chemical stress. A major challenge for biomarker applicati

The kinetics and mechanism for the overall reaction (i) (X = Cl or Br) have been studied at 25.0 °C using stopped-flow spectrophotometry. 3[AuX4]–+ 7SCN–+ 4H2O → 3[Au(SCN)2]–+ HSO4–+ HCN + 12X–+ 6H+ (i) The reaction takes place in two kinetically well separated steps. The initial, rapid process can be identified as stepwise ligand substitutions (ii) (n= 0–3) which take place via direct ligand

PURPOSE: Welders are exposed to airborne particles from the welding environment and often develop symptoms work-related from the airways. A large fraction of the particles from welding are in the nano-size range. In this study we investigate if the welders' airways are affected by exposure to particles derived from gas metal arc welding in mild steel in levels corresponding to a normal welding day

Thousands of non-coding variants have been associated with increased risk of human diseases, yet the causal variants and their mechanisms-of-action remain obscure. In an integrative study combining massively parallel reporter assays (MPRA), expression analyses (eQTL, meQTL, PCHiC) and chromatin accessibility analyses in primary cells (caQTL), we investigate 1,039 variants associated with multiple

The Sda histo-blood group antigen (GalNAcβ1-4(NeuAcα2-3)Galβ-R) is implicated in various infections and constitutes a potential biomarker for colon cancer. Sd(a−) individuals (2–4% of Europeans) may produce anti-Sda, which can lead to incompatible blood transfusions, especially if donors with the high-expressing Sd(a++)/Cad phenotype are involved. We previously reported the association of B4GALNT2
