Road Traffic Noise Exposure and Filled Prescriptions for Antihypertensive Medication : A Danish Cohort Study

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological research on effects of transportation noise on incident hypertension is inconsistent.OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate whether residential road traffic noise increases the risk for hypertension.METHODS: In a population-based cohort of 57,053 individuals 50-64 years of age at enrollment, we identified 21,241 individuals who fulfilled our case definition of filling ≥2 p

Preserving the past to serve the future : Lilli Zickerman’s inventory of textile handicrafts 1914–1931

Lilli Zickerman (1858–1949) was an entrepreneur who took part in organising the Swedish handicraft associations in the late 19th century. She was also a pioneer in the archives and active in the feminine sphere of textile handicraft. From 1914–1931 she conducted a huge inventory called Swedish Folk Textile Art that consists of more than 24,000 photographs and descriptions of vernacular textiles an

The robustness of midlatitude weather pattern changes due to arctic sea ice loss

The significance and robustness of the link between Arctic sea ice loss and changes in midlatitude weather patterns is investigated through a series of model simulations from the Community Atmosphere Model, version 5.3, with systematically perturbed sea ice cover in the Arctic. Using a large ensemble of 10 sea ice scenarios and 550 simulations, it is found that prescribed Arctic sea ice anomalies

No diurnal variation of classical and candidate biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease in CSF

Background: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers have gained increasing importance in the diagnostic work-up of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The core CSF biomarkers related to AD pathology (Aβ42, t-tau and p-tau) are currently used in CSF diagnostics, while candidate markers of amyloid metabolism (Aβ38, Aβ40, sAPPα, sAPPβ), synaptic loss (neurogranin), neuroinflammation (YKL-40), neuronal damage (VIL

Synthesis of Molecular Oxygen via Irradiation of Ice Grains in the Protosolar Nebula

Molecular oxygen has been detected in the coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko with a mean abundance of 3.80 ±0.85% by the ROSINA mass spectrometer on board the Rosetta spacecraft. To account for the presence of this species in comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, it has been shown that the radiolysis of ice grain precursors of comets is a viable mechanism in low-density environments, such as molec

Light–dependent effects of zinc protoporphyrin IX on endothelium–dependent relaxation resistant to NoM–nitro–L–arginine

Acetylcholine (ACh) induces an Nω–nitro–L–arginine (L–NOARG)–resistant relaxation and hyperpolarization in the rat isolated hepatic artery. The possibility that carbon monoxide (CO) produced by haem oxygenase (HO) is an endogenous mediator of this response was investigated. Exogenously applied CO evoked a concentration–dependent relaxation, and the CO ‘scavenger’ oxyhaemoglobin (10μM) reduced the

Reading expectations : How expectations influence our reading, eye movements, opinions, and judgments

The way we view the world is constantly affected by our expectations. The aim of this book is to determine how expectations affect the way we read. This will help us better understand how we process information, and how our expectations may change the way we read. The research is situated in experimental pragmatics and reading research. Instructions, headlines, and semantic incongruities are used

Global variations in online privacy concerns across 57 countries

Cross-cultural studies have found national differences in how concerned people are about online privacy. However, it has not yet been settled what causes this variation, and several factors have been proposed in the literature, including internet habituation, individualism, and uncertainty avoidance. Here we investigate these factors by two studies. In the first, we examine the association between

CIRLEM : a synergic integration of Collective Intelligence and Reinforcement Learning in Energy Management for enhanced climate resilience and lightweight computation

A novel energy management (EM) approach is introduced, integrating core elements of collective intelligence (CI) and reinforcement learning (RL) and called CIRLEM. It operates by distributing a flexibility signal from the energy supplier to agents within the grid, prompting their responsive actions. The flexibility signal reflects upon the collective behaviour of the agents in the grid and agents

Sensory system integration of the designed mechatronics Touch Hand

Purpose - This paper aims to explore the electronic design of the Touch Hand: a low-cost electrically powered prosthetic hand. The hand is equipped with an array of sensors allowing for position control and haptic sensation. Pressure sensors are used on the fingertips to detect grip force. A temperature sensor placed in the fingertip is used to measure the contact temperature of objects. Investiga

Duty-cycled Wake-up Schemes for Ultra-low Power Wireless Communications

In sensor network applications with low traffic intensity, idle channel listening is one of the main sources of energy waste. The use of a dedicated low-power wake-up receiver (WRx) which utilizes duty-cycled channel listening can significantlyreduce idle listening energy cost. In this thesis such a scheme is introduced and it is called DCW-MAC, an acronym forduty-cycled wake-up receiver based medi

Advancing Women Agency in Transitional Justice

This paper explores the participation, presence and agency of women in the transitional justice processes. We are concerned with the critical questions of how women agency is enabled and/or constrained in contemporary transitional justice and peacebuilding processes and how the gendering of agency may affect transformations towards a gender-just peace. Gendered hierarchies in peacebuilding and tra

Are We Promoting a Surface Approach to Learning During the First Year of Engineering Educations?

The legislated goals for Master of Science in Engineering educations include goals like having the ability to critically, independently and creatively identify, formulate and handle complex problems as well as participate in research and development work and thus contribute to knowledge development. One might therefore argue that these educations are required to promote a deep approach to learning

We discuss thermal fluid structure interaction processes, where a simulation of the time dependent temperature field is of interest. Thereby, we consider partitioned coupling schemes with a Dirichlet-Neumann method. We present an analysis of the method on a mode
