Role of N-linked glycans on bunyamwera virus glycoproteins in intracellular trafficking, protein folding, and virus infectivity.

The membrane glycoproteins (Gn and Gc) of Bunyamwera virus (BUN, family Bunyaviridae) contain three potential sites for the attachment of N-linked glycans: one site (N60) on Gn and two (N624 and N1169) on Gc. We determined that all three sites are glycosylated. Digestion of the glycoproteins with endo-beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase H (endo H) or peptide:N-glycosidase F revealed that Gn and Gc differ

To act as a Union : Explaining the development of the EU's collective foreign policy

Popular Abstract in Swedish Varför lyckas EU-länderna allt oftare agera gemensamt i frågor som rör internationell fred och säkerhet? Genom att först visa hur volymen och innehållet i Unionens gemensamma utrikes- och säkerhetspolitik har expanderat sedan 1970, närmar sig denna studie ovanstående fråga från tre olika vinklar: Är det först och främst gradvisa institutionella förändringar som möjliggjIt is difficult for states to cooperate on issues related to international peace and security. Yet, ever since 1970, the EU member states have succeeded to gradually intensify their foreign policy cooperation and increasingly act in unison towards the rest of the world. This PhD thesis seeks an explanation to this trend. It does so by initially painting a picture of when, in time, the volume and c

Nordens förhandlare? Vem är det? - En studie om den nationella kulturens påverkan på svenska dotterbolags organisationsstruktur vid etablering i Danmark

Companies today are forced to expand and position outside their borders. The Öresund region is a common labor market for Swedes and Danes. Since 2000, with the opening of the Öresund Bridge, circumstances have improved for the region's business climate which is in a strong growth. Both Swedish and Danish companies are working across borders to take advantage of the region's dynamic and suc

Kameleonten inom sjukvården - En studie om kuratorers upplevelser och strategier.

ABSTRACT Author: Oras Jacobs Title: The chameleon in the hospitals - a study based on hospital welfare officers experiences and strategies. Supervisor: Tabitha Wright Nielsen Assessor: Gunilla Lindén The purpose of this paper is to investigate how hospital welfare officers experience their role and the strategies applied to establish themselves. With the aim of answering these questions, six

Business Process Management and the Need for Measurements - including an empirical study about operating figures

Problem: Since business process management (BPM) is a very spacious concept, it is influenced from many other concepts, standards and methods that determine its constancy. Companies are asked to restructure their organisation in order to meet internal and external customer demands. The term quality comes to the fore. Organisations such as ISO and the EFQM try to certify or assess companies in term

"Kvinnor ska ju liksom inte bära sig åt" - en undersökning om synen på kvinnor som missbrukar, och om vägen mot ett liv utan droger

The aim of my essay was to compare women's and men's ways out of drug abuse, and with help from chosen theories and concepts explain and understand women's situation. My research started with a few questions concerning differences between women's and men's changing process and the role of the social network in this. I also wanted to find out how the women experienced other peop

Islet amyloid polypeptide and calcitonin gene-related peptide expression are down-regulated in dorsal root ganglia upon sciatic nerve transection

Islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) is structurally related to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and has been implicated in glucose homeostasis and diabetes pathogenesis because it is expressed in insulin cells and forms amyloid in pancreatic islets from type II diabetic patients. IAPP is also constitutively co-expressed with CGRP in rat sensory neurons. Whether expression of IAPP is altered by

Paleoredox and pyritization of soft-bodied fossils in the ordovician frankfort shale of New York

Multiple beds in the Frankfort Shale (Upper Ordovician, New York State), including the original "Beecher's Trilobite Bed," yield fossils with pyritized soft-tissues. A bed-by-bed geochemical and sedimentological analysis was carried out to test previous models of soft-tissue pyritization by investigating environmental, depositional and diagenetic conditions in beds with and without soft-tissue pre

An economic comparison of dedicated crops vs agricultural residues as feedstock for biogas of vehicle fuel quality

The vast majority of the biofuels presently used in the EU are so called first generation biofuels produced from crops. Concerns of food security, displacement of food crop production and indirect land use change (iLUC) has led to the introduction of measures to reduce the use of first generations biofuels and promote so called advanced biofuels based on feedstock that does not compete with food/f

Separating Blood and Water: Perfusion and Free Water Elimination from Diffusion MRI in the Human Brain.

The assessment of the free water fraction in the brain provides important information about extracellular processes such as atrophy and neuroinflammation in various clinical conditions as well as in normal development and aging. Free water estimates from diffusion MRI are assumed to account for freely diffusing water molecules in the extracellular space, but may be biased by other pools of molecul

Adaptive temperature regulation in the little bird in winter : predictions from a stochastic dynamic programming model

Several species of small birds are resident in boreal forests where environmental temperatures can be −20 to −30 °C, or even lower, in winter. As winter days are short, and food is scarce, winter survival is a challenge for small endothermic animals. A bird of this size will have to gain almost 10% of its lean body mass in fat every day to sustain overnight metabolism. Birds such as parids (titmic

Serum biomarkers of early stages of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in a young population

Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common monogenic cardiac disorder and the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in the young. Although in a majority of HCM cases there are gene mutations coding for sarcomere proteins, the onset for the clinical consequences of these mutations are difficult to predict, as these mutations do not show any clear relationship to the degree of

Familial Associations of Colon and Rectal Cancers With Other Cancers

BACKGROUND: Many studies have indicated that colon and rectal cancers differ in etiology and histology. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the associations of colon and rectal cancers with any other (discordant) cancer were site specific. DESIGN: A novel approach was implemented in which cancer risks were analyzed in families with increasing numbers of family members diagn

Role of Water User Associations on the Restoration of the Ecosystem in Tanzania

The Mkoji sub-catchment is the most populated sub-catchment in the uppermost part of the Rufiji basin in Tanzania, with critical users downstream, and it is vulnerable to water shortages. Despite the efforts made by governmental and non-governmental organizations in forming and supporting water user associations, little is known about their role on water resource management in the country. This st

The benefit of taxane-based therapies over fluoropyrimidine plus platinum (FP) in the treatment of esophageal cancer : a meta-analysis of clinical studies

Purpose: Fluoropyrimidine plus platinum (FP) is currently the standard treatment for esophageal cancer (EC). In recent years, taxane-based chemotherapy has also been used and has shown good efficacy in EC. This study aims to investigate the advantages of taxane-based over FP chemotherapy, as well as discuss its drawbacks, in the treatment of EC. Patients and methods: A literature search was done f

Circulating fetuin - A and risk of type 2 diabetes : A mendelian randomization analysis

Fetuin-A, a hepatic-origin protein, is strongly positively associated with risk of type 2 diabetes in human observational studies, but it is unknown whether this association is causal. We aimed to study the potential causal relation of circulating fetuin-A to risk of type 2 diabetes in a Mendelian randomization study with single nucleotide polymorphisms located in the fetuin-A–encoding AHSG gene.
