Increase in forest fires may damage the crucial ozone layer

All particles that reach the atmosphere cause different chemical reactions. Particles come partly from natural sources such as volcanic eruptions and forest fires, and partly from pollution and emissions. Aerosol researcher Johan Friberg studies particles at high altitudes. He fears that the global increase in forest fires could have a significant impact on the ozone layer. “I study the air in the

More efficient policy instruments can save the climate

Climate change can be stopped - with the right policy instruments. But to be effective, these policies must be accepted by both citizens and businesses. In a new research project, Thomas Sterner, Professor of Environmental Economics at the School of Business, Economics and Law in Gothenburg and a member of BECC, will get a better knowledge of how these policies should be designed. Policy instrumen

EU project shows welfare policies are vital to climate mitigation

In order to achieve the 1.5-degree target set by the Paris Agreement, massive cuts in carbon emissions are needed. For the EU, this requires a reduction of household carbon footprints from 2015 of almost 70% by 2030 and over 90% by 2050. Too often, climate policies are not placed within a broader social context and policy makers neglect to see that welfare policies are vital to climate mitigation.

Atoms absorb energy in unexpected ways

A surprising behaviour of atoms is giving scientists new insights into one of the most fundamental phenomena in nature: the absorption of light. A new physical phenomenon for light pulses has been discovered. The study, published in the prestigious journal Physical Review Letters, was conducted by physicists at Lund University. In the world of atoms, the laws of nature as we know them do not apply

How the lake Lake turned crystal clear

Fish deaths, algae growth, bans on swimming, and fecal bacteria – now they are just a distant memory. This year, the engineers were able to hold their annual lake battle, the Regatta, on home turf again. This was thanks to LTH’s landlord Akademiska Hus, and their collaboration with VA SYD. But it is also the story of two LTH alumni who, in their professional roles, joined forces to deal with flood
