Patients in intensive care suffer from severe illnesses or injuries and from symptoms related to care and treatments. Environmental factors, such as lighting at night, can disturb patients’ circadian rhythms. The aim was to investigate whether patients displayed circadian rhythms and whether a cycled lighting intervention would impact it. In this pilot study (N = 60), a cycled lighting interventio

Plant-based beverages are increasing in popularity and quinoa is an attractive option. A hygienic implication linked to the production of beverages from raw material originating from plants is the high microbial contamination. The safety of the product can be guaranteed by lactic acid fermentation, and by using a probiotic strain as starter culture for the fermentation, the final product will bene

BACKGROUND: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) remains one of the leading causes of premature death in diabetes. DKD is classified on albuminuria and reduced kidney function (estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)) but these have modest value for predicting future renal status. There is an unmet need for biomarkers that can be used in clinical settings which also improve prediction of renal declin

This report is a fire safety evaluation of Norrbottensteatern in Luleå, Sweden. The report was carried out as a part of the education program for fire engineers. The main purpose was to analyse the safety regarding evacuation in case of fire, and to present a proposal of measures if necessary. The theatre, built in 1986, is a four storey building and can hold more than 600 guests in its three salo

Problem definition Since 1995, the vehicle-gas market has been growing at a rapid pace. One segment that has not kept up with this development is the heavy gas-powered trucks. One explanation is that the existing gas-powered trucks cannot compete against the traditional diesel trucks. Some examples of attributes that makes the gas alternative less attractive are engine power, efficiency, driving d

As a transition economy, China faces the reality of shortage of innovation resources and unbalanced allocation of innovation resources among regions when operating innovation activities. In order to solve these two problems, China needs to make efforts in increasing innovation efficiency and narrowing disparities between eastern regions and other regions. Among them, central regions are the area t

Polysulfone (PSf) is a traditional material widely used for manufacturing microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. However, the hydrophobic nature of PSf makes the membranes prone to protein fouling. In order to create non fouling surfaces and further decrease the pore size, the membrane pores can be modified by different strategies as a

The immune system is of central importance to clear-off pathogens in order to keep an organism healthy. In vertebrates, the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) is a genomic region that holds key genes involved in adaptive immunity and in particular in the antigen presenting process. The presentation relies on MHC class I (MHC-I) and MHC class II (MHC-II) molecules that are encoded by MHC-I and

Background: Ambulatory oxygen therapy is prescribed for patients with chronic lung diseases who experience exertional hypoxemia. However, available devices may not adequately meet user requirements, and their performance characteristics are heterogeneous. Objective: This study aims to identify devices available for delivery of ambulatory oxygen therapy, the technologies that they use to generate o

The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for tw

Brazil's Atlantic Forest biome is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, whose heterogeneous ecosystems are threatened by habitat loss and climate change. Palaeoecological research can provide essential context for the impacts of anthropogenic climate change in the 21st Century and beyond, but existing studies have notable limitations in the insights they can provide: vegetation proxy data are

Justice is an underlying principle and an important lens in understanding sustainable development goals (SDG). There is a need for analysis and clarification on the underlying principles of justice embedded in the SDGs. Goals such as no poverty (goal 1), zero hunger (goal 2), health and well-being (goal 3), gender equality (goal 5), affordable energy (goal 7), reduced inequalities (goal 10) as wel

Background: Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is one of the most life-threatening hematological emergencies and requires a prompt correct diagnosis by cytomorphology and flow cytometry (FCM) with later confirmation by cytogenetics/molecular genetics. However, nucleophosmin 1 muted acute myeloid leukemia (NPM1+ AML) can mimic APL, especially the hypogranular variant of APL. Our study aimed to deve

Metal implants, in e.g. joint replacements, are generally considered to be a success. As mechanical stability is important for the longevity of a prosthesis, the biological reaction of the bone to the mechanical loading conditions after implantation and during remodelling determines its fate. The bone reaction at the implant interface can be studied using high-resolution imaging. However, commonly

In this article, the convergence of quantum mechanical (QM) free-energy simulations based on molecular dynamics simulations at the molecular mechanics (MM) level has been investigated. We have estimated relative free energies for the binding of nine cyclic carboxylate ligands to the octa-acid deep-cavity host, including the host, the ligand, and all water molecules within 4.5 Å of the ligand in th

Cultural and creative activities are today described as central to regional and urban development by politicians and governments. Creative city policies are often aiming at economic benefits for the city itself, and there are normative purposes with many research studies as well as projects undertaken (Eckardt 2005; Markusen and Gadwa 2010; Kovacs 2011). Creative city policy is often oriented towa

In this study a multilocus phylogenetic analysis of metalmark moths (Lepidoptera: Choreutidae) focused on resolving the higher-level phylogeny of this group is presented. Through the analysis of this dataset, I explore different data-partitioning strategies in Bayesian phylogenetic inference, and find that a partitioning strategy can have a large influence on the results of phylogenetic analysis.
