PURPOSE: Postoperative hypocalcaemia has been reported to be more common after total thyroidectomy (TT) for Graves' disease than after TT for benign atoxic multinodular goitre (MNG). The reasons for this potential association are not clear. In the present study, the frequency and risk factors of hypocalcaemia after TT for Graves' vs MNG were compared. METHODS: Between January 1999 and October 2009

BACKGROUND:: Few and inconclusive results have been presented regarding the influence of human T-lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1) infection on the risk of acquiring tuberculosis (TB). METHODS:: In 1994-1997, we performed a prospective study on hospitalized adult patients with pulmonary TB in Guinea-Bissau and compared the clinical outcome in HIV-2 and HIV-negative patients. We determined the prevalen

The object of this study was to investigate whether exposure of pipe-layers to thermal degradation products of diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) could be assessed by analysing 4,4-methylenedianiline (MDA) in hydrolysed plasma and urine, and whether the genotype for N-acetylation affected these biomarker levels. Blood and urine samples were drawn from 30-pipe-layers who had been welding polyuretha

Aims and objectivesTo explore how nurses and managers perceive that evidence‐based sources are obtained to inform relevant nursing interventions.BackgroundImplementation of evidence‐based practice requires a systematic search and evaluation of research, clinical expertise and consideration of the patients’ preferences and values. Much has been written over the past decade about how this should be

Major intrinsic proteins (MIPs) also called aquaporins form pores in membranes to facilitate the permeation of water and certain small polar solutes across membranes. MIPs are present in virtually every organism but are uniquely abundant in land plants. To elucidate the evolution and function of MIPs in terrestrial plants, the MIPs encoded in the genome of the spikemoss Selaginella moellendorffii

OBJECTIVE: To investigate a marker of tumor proliferation, Ki-67, and telomerase expression in glioblastoma multiforme and to compare the results of different mainly quantitative assessments, in relation to age and survival rates. METHODS: Immunohistochemical stainings of Ki-67 and hTERT were evaluated in 39 formaldehyde-fixed, paraffin-embedded surgical samples of glioblastoma multiforme diagnose

OBJECTIVE: To examine how different scoring models for a diet quality index influence associations with mortality outcomes. DESIGN: A study within the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort. Food and nutrient intakes were estimated using a diet history method. The index included six components: SFA, PUFA, fish and shellfish, fibre, fruit and vegetables, and sucrose. Component scores were assigned using pre

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the outcome of minor amputations (through, or distal to, the ankle joint) in patients with diabetes. METHOD: All diabetic patients in a defined population undergoing one or more minor amputation between 1982 and 2006 were investigated according to a standardised protocol and were followed until final outcome (healing or death). A total of 410 consecutive amputations in 309 p

This article explores the technological choices made at the dawn of the massification of retail finance. We describe and analyze the early development of electronic banking and the foundations of the cashless society through the experiences of organizations with similar governance in two different competitive environments — Swedish and British savings banks. We document how the adoption of direct-

Lack of knowledge prevents us from exactly calculating the behavior of electromagnetic fields. We study two extremes in this respect: scattering against randomly distributed particles (no idea of the position or orientation of the scatterers), and random errors in antenna technology (small deviations from what we think are the proper parameters). Random variables are used to model our lack of knowl

The present thesis aimed to investigate three social psychological barriers to nontraditional career choice. Study Ӏ showed that threats to gender identity may lead to more gender-typical occupational preferences among adolescents. The results suggested a unique effect of gender identity threat, as a control threat did not have the same effect.

Rate R=(c-1)/c convolutional codes of constraint length nu can be represented by conventional syndrome trellises with a state complexity of s=nu or by binary syndrome trellises with a state complexity of s=nu or s=nu+1, which corresponds to at most 2^s states at each trellis level. It is shown that if the parity-check polynomials fulfill certain conditions, there exist binary syndrome trellises wi

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tau and amyloid brain pathology. With the gradual degeneration of neurons, cognitive symptoms will arise and the affected individual will eventually develop AD dementia. The neuropathologic hallmarks of AD have been observed also in cognitively healthy individuals, which has led to the assumption that the disorde
