Development of Modelling and Simulation tools for Geothermal Basements and Deep Foundations in Soft Clays

Pile heat exchangers are fast emerging as a potentially viable alternative to the more prevalent borehole heat exchangers for the provision of space heating and cooling. In the last decade or so, the use of geothermal piles has increased sharply in many countries including Belgium, China, Japan, Switzerland, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and United States, among others. In Sweden, however, inte

A valuable pair - candidate biomarkers RBM3 and PODXL in urothelial bladder cancer

Abstract: Bladder cancer is a heterogenous disease, ranging from minimally invasive, low-grade tumours with lowrecurrence rates and mortality on one end of the spectrum, and muscle invasive, high-grade disease prone torecurrence, progression and death at the other end.The aim of this thesis was to investigate the expression, clinicopathological correlates and prognostic significanceof the candidat

Seasonal variation in biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions from Norway spruce in a Swedish boreal forest

Terpene emissions from the top-canopy layer (at 20 m) of one 118-year-old Norway spruce tree were measured between June and September 2013 using a branch chamber. Total terpene emissions varied from 0.05 to 332.5 μg gdw -1 h-1 with a peak in August. Monoterpenes dominated throughout the summer and on average accounted for 65% of the total terpene mass, followed by sesquiterpenes (29%) and isoprene

In diabetic eyes, multifocal ERG reflects differences in function between the nasal part and the temporal part of the macula.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to compare retinal function between the perifoveal nasal and perifoveal temporal areas of diabetic eyes using multifocalERG (mfERG). METHODS: We included 36 eyes from 27 patients with diabetes (age 58 ± 14 years; duration of diabetes 13 ± 9 years; HbA(1c) 7.1 ± 1.8%) and a control group with 18 eyes from 18 healthy subjects (age 57 ± 11 years). Retin

Bombus terrestris in a mass-flowering pollinator-dependent crop : A mutualistic relationship?

Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) rely on an abundant and diverse selection of floral resources to meet their nutritional requirements. In farmed landscapes, mass-flowering crops can provide an important forage resource for bumblebees, with increased visitation from bumblebees into mass-flowering crops having an additional benefit to growers who require pollination services. This study explores the mutuali

Root system estimation based on satellite remote sensing : An applied study in Eastern Uganda

The density of roots is an important factor influencing the rate and magnitude of landslides. Due to the increased variability in climate, mainly rainfall, Eastern Uganda is severely struck by an increasing number of these mass movements, often with human casualties as one of the negative impacts. The aim of this study is to explore the possibility to estimate the depth and density of the root sys

The surface exposed amino acid residues of monomeric proteins determine the partitioning in aqueous two-phase systems

It is of great interest and importance how different amino acid residues contribute to and affect the properties of a protein surface, Partitioning in aqueous two-phase systems has the potential to be used as a rapid and simple method for studying the surface properties of proteins. The influence on partitioning of the surface exposed amino acid residues of eight structurally determined monomeric

A study in de-iconization : phonological and morphological adaptations of Indo-European bird names

Bird names are very important and interesting when it comes to studying iconicity. In particular, words naming birds with a distinct call, such as crow, raven, cuckoo, owl, and eagle, typically emerge by direct imitation. Initially, the name of the bird in languages mimic the sound of the bird’s call (Marttila 2011). However, over time, the sound structure of the name of the bird often becomes sub

Human well-being and per capita energy use

Increased wealth and per capita energy use have transformed lives and shaped societies, but energy poverty remains a global challenge. Previous research has shown positive relationships among metrics of health and happiness and economic indices such as income and gross domestic product and between energy use and human development. To our knowledge, however, no comprehensive assessment has examined

Simulation-based Analysis of Co-dispatching in Prehospital Stroke Care

A mobile stroke unit (MSU) is a specialized ambulance, enabling to shorten the time to diagnosis and treatment for stroke patients. In the current paper, we present a simulation-based approach to study the potential impacts of collaborative use of regular ambulances and MSUs in prehospital transportation for stroke patients, denoted as co-dispatching. We integrated a co-dispatch policy in an exist

Development of a probabilistic model for Covid-19 dynamics with consideration of non-severe and severe infections

Covid-19 has triggered a massive global challenge with 1,576,069 overall confirmed cases, 1,545,429 recovered cases, and 30,640 deaths across Pakistan. Epidemiological models have always played an important role in understanding the dynamics of such infectious diseases. The severity of Covid-19 infection depends on several factors such as immune system and virus variants. Although detailed epidemi

The true costs of cesarean delivery for patients in rural Rwanda : Accounting for post-discharge expenses in estimated health expenditures

Introduction: While it is recognized that there are costs associated with postoperative patient follow-up, risk assessments of catastrophic health expenditures (CHEs) due to surgery in sub-Saharan Africa rarely include expenses after discharge. We describe patient-level costs for cesarean section (c-section) and follow-up care up to postoperative day (POD) 30 and evaluate the contribution of follo
