Judges', lay judges', and police officers' beliefs about factors affecting children's testimony about sexual abuse
The authors examined Swedish judges', lay judges', and police officers' beliefs about factors that may complicate or facilitate children's reports of sexual abuse. Participants (N = 562) rated potential complicating and facilitating factors and freely reported which criteria they considered important when assessing the reliability of child witnesses. The groups had similar opinions regarding which

Tracking of proinflammatory collagen-specific T cells in early and late collagen-induced arthritis in humanized mice
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with certain HLA-DR4 subtypes. The target autoantigen(s) is unknown, but type II collagen (CII) is a candidate, with a single immunodominant DR4-restricted 261-273 T cell epitope (CII(261273)). In the present study, we have prepared HLA-DR4:CII(261-273) tetramers and analyzed peripheral blood, lymph node, and synovial fluid cells fr
Characterization of Polyisoprene-b-Poly(methyl methacrylate) Diblock Copolymer Micelles in Acetonitrile
In acetonitrile, polyisoprene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PI−PMMA) diblock copolymers form starlike micelles with a dense core of the insoluble PI blocks and a soft solvent-swollen corona of the soluble PMMA blocks. Static and dynamic light scattering experiments in combination with viscosity measurements show that these micelles behave hydrodynamically as hard spheres. The block copolymers are l
Expression and regulation of CCL25 and its role in T cell localization to and function within the small intestine
Earlier studies have demonstrated an important role for the chemokine CCL25, and its receptor CCR9, in the generation of the small intestinal lymphocyte compartment. The work in this thesis was aimed at determining how CCL25 is regulated within the small intestinal mucosa, and what potential role it plays in T cell localization to and function within this site. We have identified epithelial cells
Positional identification of Ncf1 as a gene that regulates arthritis severity in rats.
The identification of genes underlying quantitative-trait loci (QTL) for complex diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, is a challenging and difficult task for the human genome project. Through positional cloning of the Pia4 QTL in rats, we found that a naturally occurring polymorphism of Ncf1 (encoding neutrophil cytosolic factor 1, a component of the NADPH oxidase complex) regulates arthritis s
Prevention of diabetes in nonobese diabetic mice mediated by CD1d-restricted nonclassical NKT cells
A role for regulatory lymphocytes has been demonstrated in the pathogenesis of type I diabetes in the NOD mouse but the nature of these cells is debated. CD1d-restricted NKT lymphocytes have been implicated in this process. Previous reports of reduced diabetes incidence in NOD mice in which the numbers of NKT cells are artificially increased have been attributed to the enhanced production of IL-4
Natural killer T cell subsets and regulation of autoimmune diabetes
This thesis is focused on natural killer (NK) T cells. NKT cells recognize lipids and glycolipids, rather than peptides, in the contents of the antigen presenting molecule CD1d. NKT cells have a surface phenotype reminiscent of memory cells, and have been shown to rapidly produce large amounts of cytokines, such as IL-4 and IFN-gamma, upon activation. Because of their rapid response to activation,

Language Use with Blissymbolics
Three young adults with cerebral palsy who used Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCAs) with Blissymbolics took part in a study where they tried pre-stored phrases for specific activities. Before and after the study, 1 ½ years apart, they took part in semi-structured interviews where they answered open ended questions about the activity shopping. Analyses of the expressions they constructed with t

A general model of resonance capture in planetary systems: first- and second-order resonances
Mean motion resonances are a common feature of both our own Solar system and of extrasolar planetary systems. Bodies can be trapped in resonance when their orbital semimajor axes change, for instance when they migrate through a protoplanetary disc. We use a Hamiltonian model to thoroughly investigate the capture behaviour for first- and second-order resonances. Using this method, all resonances of
Scheduling of Conditional Process Graphs for the Synthesis of Embedded Systems
We present an approach to process scheduling based on an abstract graph representation which captures both data-flow and the flow of control. Target architectures consist of several processors, ASICs and shared busses. We have developed a heuristic which generates a schedule table so that the worst case delay is minimized. Several experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the approach.
Dependence of a planet's chaotic zone on particle eccentricity: the shape of debris disc inner edges
The orbit of a planet is surrounded by a chaotic zone wherein nearby particles' orbits are chaotic and unstable. It was shown by Wisdom that the chaos is driven by the overlapping of mean motion resonances which occurs within a distance (δa/a)chaos≈ 1.3μ^2/7 of the planet's orbit. However, the width of mean motion resonances grows with the particles' eccentricity, which will increase the width of

Optimal Control over Networks with Long Random Delays
This paper studies the effects of stochastic time delays on automatic control systems which uses communication networks. We assume a linear process to be controlled and known delay probability distributions. The contribution of this paper is to extend the theory in(Nilsson 1998) to delays that may be longer than one sample period.Using a quadratic cost we find the optimal full-state-information con
The updated version of the IAU MDC database of photographic meteor orbits
The database of photographic meteor orbits of the IAU Meteor Data Centerin Lund has gradually been updated. The version 2001, which has beenprepared for distribution and which will be released soon, containscomplete orbital and geophysical data on 4581 meteors (equinox J2000.0).A new meteor identification code consisting of the publication serialnumber, the author or station code and number of the
