Measurement of D*(+/-) meson production and F-2(c) in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA

The inclusive production of D*+/-(2010) mesons in deep-inelastic scattering is studied with the HI detector at HERA. In the kinematic region 1 < Q(2) < 100 GeV2 and 0.05 < y < 0.7 an e(+) p cross section for inclusive D*+/- meson production of 8.50 +/- 0.42(stat.)(-100)(+1.21)(syst.) nb is measured in the visible range p(tD*) > 1.5 GeV and eta(D*) < 1.5. Single and double differential inclusive D*

Cognition- and anxiety-related behavior, synaptophysin and MAP2 immunoreactivity in the adult rat treated with a single course of antenatal betamethasone

We investigated the effects of a single course of antenatal betamethasone on cognition- and anxiety-related behavior and synaptophysin and microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) immunoreactivity in the adult rat hippocampus. On d 20 of gestation, pregnant rats were injected with either 1) 170 mu g/kg body weight of betamethasone ("clinically equivalent dose," equivalent to 12 mg twice, 24 h apart

Bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage findings in cross-country skiers with and without "ski asthma"

Bronchial hyperresponsiveness to methacholine with asthma-like symptoms ("ski asthma") is frequent in elite cross-country skiers. To further the understanding of "ski asthma", 10 nonasthmatic, nonatopic controls and 30 adolescent elite skiers were investigated by bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Nine skiers were atopic without allergy symptoms. Compared with controls, the macroscopic

Role of adenine and guanine sites in hole hopping in dna nanowire

Transfer integrals for oligos with different bases have been calculated using INDO/Koopman's approximation to unveil the charge transport mechanism in DNA. The sequences, G(A)nG, n = 1, 2, …, 10; G(A)xG(A)yG, x + y = 9; and G(A)xG(A)yG(A)zG, x + y + z = 8, were employed to interpret the Guanine (G) and Adenine(A) hopping. Adenine hopping is found to be faster in G(A)nG sequences with longer Adenin

Pollen productivity estimates for the reconstruction of past vegetation cover in the cultural landscape of southern Sweden

Pollen productivity estimates (PPE) are one of the critical parameters for a quantitative reconstruction of past vegetation from fossil pollen records. Modern pollen and vegetation data were collected in traditional landscapes of southern Sweden to derive PPE for the most characteristic plant taxa. The 42 selected sites are assumed to be good analogues of historical to prehistorical grasslands. A

Matrilin-2, a large, oligomeric matrix protein, is expressed by a great variety of cells and forms fibrillar networks

Matrilin-2 is a member of the protein superfamily with von Willebrand factor type A-like modules. Mouse matrilin-2 cDNA fragments were expressed in 293-EBNA cells, and the protein was purified, characterized, and used to immunize rabbits. The affinity-purified antiserum detects matrilin-2 in dense and loose connective tissue structures, subepithelial connective tissue of the skin and digestive tra

The effectiveness of enzymatic replacement therapy measured by turbidimetry and the lipaemic index in exocrine pancreatic insufficient young, growing pigs, fed a high-fat diet.

Purpose: Conventionally, the management of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) involves the consumption of a specific diet as well as the replacement of pancreatic enzymes, the effectiveness of which is usually measured by a classical method of blood analyses of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and triglycerides (TG). Dietary supplementation with a pancreatic enzyme preparation (PEP), in conj

Optimizing factor prophylaxis for the haemophilia population: where do we stand?

The hallmark of severe haemophilia, defined as a circulating level of factor (F) VIII (haemophilia A cases) or FIX (haemophilia B cases) of < 1%, is recurrent bleeding into muscles and joints (haemarthroses) from an early age of life. The inevitable result of such bleeding is progressive joint damage, leading to disabling arthritis that is typically evident within the first 2 decades of life in pe

The importance of cofactors in the histologic progression of minimal and mild chronic hepatitis C

A follow-up liver biopsy was done 9-16 years (mean 12 years) after initial biopsy in 20 untreated Swedish patients infected with hepatitis C (8 men, 12 women; mean age 30 years at initial biopsy) in whom first biopsy had been classified as chronic persistent hepatitis. A significant progression of liver damage was found when using Histology Activity Index (HAI) scoring according to Knodell (p=0.00

Calcitonin gene-related peptide in cervicogenic headache

Trigeminovascular activation is involved in the pathophysiology of migraine and cluster headache. The marker evaluated best for trigeminovascular activation is calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the cranial circulation. It is unknown whether trigeminovascular activation plays any role in cervicogenic headache (CEH). The objective of this study was to investigate CGRP plasma levels in CEH pa

The meaning of fatigue for women with multiple sclerosis

Aim. This paper reports the findings of a study that aimed to elucidate the meaning of fatigue for women with multiple sclerosis (MS). Background. Living with chronic illness can involve giving up usual activities. MS is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. Fatigue is a common experience among people with MS; however, little is known about the meaning of fatigue experienced

Gender and regional differences in perceived job stress across Europe

Background: Over the last 20 years stress at work has been found to be predictive of several conditions such as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and non- specific sick leave. The Karasek demand/ control/ strain concept has been the most widely used in prospective epidemiological studies. Objectives: To describe distribution in Karasek's demand/ control ( DC) dimensions as well as preval
