In Germany, the UK, the US and the Scandinavian countries there is a distinct difference between direct and indirect (also referred to as contributory) statutory patent infringement. The patent laws that regulate incursions on the exclusive rights of patent holders in these jurisdictions generally distinguish between direct patent infringement on the one hand, which is based on wholly objective cr

Biorefineries have the potential to partially or entirely replace petrochemistry for the production of our daily bulk and fine chemicals. However, this replacement can only be sustainable and cost-effective if the raw material used is cheap, renewable and does not compete with the food and feed industry. One raw material meeting these criteria is lignocellulose from agricultural and forestry waste

BACKGROUND: Methylmercury (MeHg) is present in fish and is a neurotoxicant at sufficiently high levels. One potential mechanism of MeHg toxicity early in life is epigenetic dysregulation that may affect long-term neurodevelopment. Altered DNA methylation of nervous system-related genes has been associated with adult mental health outcomes.OBJECTIVE: To assess associations between prenatal MeHg exp

This paper discusses approaches to facilitate, stimulate and support interaction both between academic teachers and in the classroom with a particular focus on digital tools and resources. A pragmatic approach is advocated, in which best practice experiences and the easiest ways to forwardthem are discussed and two suggestions presented.

The ectomycorrhizal fungus Paxillus involutus decomposes proteins using a two-step mechanism, including oxidation and proteolysis. Oxidation involves the action of extracellular hydroxyl radicals (•OH) generated by the Fenton reaction. This reaction requires the presence of iron(II). Here, we monitored the speciation of extracellular iron and the secretion of iron(III)-reducing metabolites during

This study investigates values and narratives of urban biodiversity in the highly culturally and biologically diverse city Cape Town, South Africa. Local expressions of values of biodiversity are explored, in the context of the challenge of accounting for diverse values of biodiversity through a green infrastructure approach. Based on interviews with practitioners involved in green space and biodi

Sizing of borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) for direct ground cooling systems (DGCSs) is a critical part of the overall system design. This study investigates the thermal performance and sizing of a DGCS with two different operation strategies using experimental and simulation approaches. The traditional on/off operation strategy keeps a constant room temperature. The continuous operation strategy h

Gliomas are the most common intracranial primary tumors, for which very few therapeutic options are available. The most malignant subtype is the glioblastoma, a disease associated with a 5-year survival rate lower than 5%. Given that research in glycobiology continues highlighting the role of glycans in tumor cell biology, it offers an interesting niche for the search of new therapeutic targets. I

In this preview of the introduction of the special issue of the AILA Review (Volume 34, Number 1), we focus on developing shared languages in and across domains and professional settings. The relation and collaboration between researchers and practitioners has long been discussed within and across applied sciences and theoretical disciplines, mainly in the framework of transdisciplinarity (see AIL

Drawing on participatory action research conducted in Sierra Leone, Kosovo and the Philippines, Human Rights in Prisons analyses encounters between rights-based non-governmental organisations and prisons. It explores the previously under-researched perspectives of prison staff and prisoners on their lives and relationships.

We test for age and metallicity gradients in the Galactic Bulge between the two low extinction windows Baade's window (l = 1°.1 b = -4°.8) and Sagittarius-I (l = 1°.3 b = -2°.7). We derive a metallicity difference of ≤ 0.2 dex between BW and SGR-I window. This corresponds to a metallicity gradient of 1.3 dex kpc-1. This steep gradient is reconcilable with the existence of a short scale length inne
