EDGE: from quiescent to gas-rich to star-forming low-mass dwarf galaxies

We study how star formation is regulated in low-mass field dwarf galaxies (105≤M⋆≤106M⊙), using cosmological high-resolution (3pc) hydrodynamical simulations. Cosmic reionization quenches star formation in all our simulated dwarfs, but three galaxies with final dynamical masses of 3×109M⊙ are subsequently able to replenish their interstellar medium by slowly accreting gas. Two of these galaxie

The importance of biomechanical restoration for total hip arthroplasty

A vast majority of patients get their expectations met. Improvement of materials, implant designs, and surgical techniques, have extended prosthetic survival. However, inferior placement and sizing of a hip prosthesis are known to increase the risk of mechanical failure, wear, and early loosening as well as p

Radiative lifetime measurements and transition probabilities of astrophysical interest in ErIII

Radiative lifetimes of seven excited states of Er iii have been measured using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence following two-photon excitation. Relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations taking core-polarization effects into account are found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental results. A large set of new calculated transition probabilities is presented for many transitions of

CD1-dependent regulation of chronic central nervous system inflammation in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

The existence of T cells restricted for the MHC I-like molecule CD1 is well established, but the function of these cells is still obscure; one implication is that CD1-dependent T cells regulate autoimmunity. In this study, we investigate their role in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model for multiple sclerosis, using CD1-deficient mice on a C57BL/6 background. We show t

Nucleolar proteins with altered expression in leukemic cell lines.

The function of the nucleolus is intimately connected to cell proliferation, division and growth. Many cancer cells have enlarged nucleoli, and several nucleolar proteins have been linked to tumorigenesis. In order to find proteins whose expression is altered in the nucleoli of leukemic cells, we carried out two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis (2-D DIGE) analyses. Prohibitin (PHB) and T

3D Archaeology at Çatalhöyük

The project “3D-Digging at Çatalhöyük” began in 2010 thanks to collaboration between Stanford University (Archaeological Center) and the University of California Merced with the scope to record, document (with different digital technologies) and visualize in virtual reality all the phases of archaeological excavation. Phase I (2010 excavation season) of the project was mainly oriented to test diff

Crime Tourism and the Branding of Places

My paper will focus on the expanding tourism connected to popular crime novels in Sweden. The Swedish crime genre has been exploding during the last decades, and several Swedish crime writers have had an immense success abroad, e. g. Henning Mankell, Liza Marklund and Karin Alvtegen. Some of these writers have chosen to connect their stories to a specific place or region; a fact, which has been ex

Simulation of Human-Vehicle Interaction in Vehicle Design at Saab Automobile: Present and Future

Developers, reviewers and users of human simulation tools claim that the use of these tools may reduce development time and development cost. However, before these benefits will be fully visible, there are some barriers to overcome. The aims of this case study are to identify which departments at Saab Automobile use some sort of human simulation tool today, and to identify the information flow and

The Moral Side of M&A: Changing Morale Reflecting Moral Change?

Is personnel resistance in deed as dysfunctional as it is assumed to be, in M&A theory? According to Hirschman (1970), voice is more loyal than exit, implying that employees telling their opinion should be understood as a sign of loyalty, rather than a problem. An important aspect of loyalty is its moral basis. Scanning M&A literature, it becomes evident that very little has been written o

Should parents take active steps to preserve their children's fertility?

It has been argued that, when there is a probable imminent risk of loss of children's fertility, their parents should take active steps to preserve their reproductive potential if possible – or even that children have a right to such interventions being undertaken on them on their behalf, as an expression of their right to an open future. In this chapter, I explore these proposals and some of thei

From lenticulars to blue compact dwarfs : The stellar mass fraction is regulated by disc gravitational instability

The stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) is not only one of the main sources of information we have on the connection between galaxies and their dark matter haloes, but also an important indicator of the performance of galaxy formation models. Here, we use one of the largest sample of galaxies with both high-quality rotation curves and near-infrared surface photometry, and perform a detailed compa

Altered Acylcarnitine Metabolism Is Associated With an Increased Risk of Atrial Fibrillation

Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, but the pathogenesis is not completely understood. The application of metabolomics could help in discovering new metabolic pathways involved in the development of the disease. Methods and Results We measured 112 baseline fasting metabolites of 3770 participants in the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study; these participants were fre

Human rights and the 1980 U.S. presidential election

Due to dramatic developments in international affairs and the starkly diverging foreign policy visions of the two candidates, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, foreign policy occupied a usually prominent role in the 1980 U.S. presidential election. A central component of the foreign policy debate was the appropriate role for human rights concerns in American foreign relations. Nevertheless, neither

Longitudinal Assessment of PTH in Community-Dwelling Older Women-Elevations Are Not Associated With Mortality

Context: In older women, the magnitude of elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) and its consequence is unclear. Objective: To describe normal PTH profiles over time and the association with mortality.Design and Participants: There were 1044 community-dwelling women in the Malmö Osteoporosis Prospective Risk Assessment cohort (OPRA) who attended baseline (age 75 years). Follow-ups were attended by 715

Sustained versus standard inflations during neonatal resuscitation to prevent mortality and improve respiratory outcomes

BACKGROUND: At birth, infants' lungs are fluid-filled. For newborns to have a successful transition, this fluid must be replaced by air to enable gas exchange. Some infants are judged to have inadequate breathing at birth and are resuscitated with positive pressure ventilation (PPV). Giving prolonged (sustained) inflations at the start of PPV may help clear lung fluid and establish gas volume with

Introduction

Refugees have moved into the spotlight of public debate in Europe and North America, where they are targeted by multiple welfare state interventions. This volume analyses the tensions that emerge within the strong welfare states of Northern Europe when faced with an increased immigration of protection-seeking people. Examining the encounter between refugees and the welfare states, this book explor
