I this paper I study how the fantastic can be used in novels that pretend to be historical. The case of the French Indies, as in the works of Patrick Chamoiseau, is a good example of how the fantastic can help when discovering a past that has been forgotten or repressed.

Noise Generated by a Lifted Flame in a Vitiated Co-Flow

The acoustic field generated by a lifted flame is studied by a hybrid approach. First, Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are used to compute the flow and the acoustic sources. Next, an inhomogeneous wave equation is solved to obtain the resulting acoustic field. The flow computations show good agreement with experimental data. The dominant acoustic sources are found to be located in the ignition region

Human IgE - What We Can Learn from Repertoire Studies and How We Can Use Them as Tools

Allergiska reaktioner är ett utmärkt exempel på en sådan situatiAntibodies of the IgE isotype play a key role as the allergen recognizer in allergic disease, which today affects as much as a third of the population in the industrialized parts of the world. Despite this crucial role of IgE, our knowledge of IgE repertoires and how we can utilize the information hidden in monoclonal IgE to improve the quality of life of allergic patients, is limited. This thesis

Biomarker Discovery in Cancer and Autoimmunity using an Affinity Proteomics Platform - a Tool for Personalized Medicine

Identification of novel biomarkers for early diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment decision will be instrumental for improving disease outcome for patients suffering from complex diseases, such as cancer and autoimmune disorders. Within personalized medicine, the use of circulating biomarkers will allow clinicians to tailor medical treatment based on individual characteristics of each patient, using

Cross-Reactive Antibodies With the Capacity to Mediate HIV-1 Envelope Glycoprotein-Targeted Antibody-Dependent Cellular Cytotoxicity Identified in HIV-2-Infected Individuals

Disease progression of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is delayed by HIV type 2 (HIV-2) in individuals with dual HIV-1/HIV-2 infection. The protective mechanisms, however, are still to be revealed. In the current study we examined type-specific and cross-reactive antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) in HIV-1 and HIV-2 monoinfection or dual infection. Of note, intertype cross

A Simplified Model to Simulate pH and Alkalinity in the Mixing Zone Downstream of an Acidic Discharge

A modelling methodology was developed that simulates the resulting pH and alkalinity in the mixing zone when acidic water is discharged into a river. The input to the model are the: pH, alkalinity, flow, and temperature of both the river water and the acidic discharge. Two different scenarios were simulated: (1) a change of pH in the acidic discharge, assuming constant flow; and (2) a change in th

It’s a long walk : Lasting effects of maternity ward openings on labour market performance

Studies showing that large-scale public health interventions in early life have lasting economic consequences are still scarce and rarely disclose the mechanisms. Being born in a hospital versus having a traditional birth attendant at home represents the most common early life policy change worldwide. Knowing the consequences of this policy is also important given the ongoing enlargement of matern

A natural female disadvantage? : Maternal mortality and the role of nutrition related causes of death in The Netherlands, 1875-1899

This article addresses the question whether maternal mortality should be excluded from the study of excess female mortality. This phenomenon points to lower survival chances for women in certain age groups as opposed to men in the same age group. The existence of excess female mortality has been established for a number of European countries, primarily for the nineteenth century period, and it has

The Origins of the Swedish Wage Bargaining Model

That export-led industry sets the wage norm for the whole economy, acting as the “wage leader”, is a celebrated part of the Swedish wage bargaining and labour market model. Export- led wage leadership is assumed to lead to controlled, non-inflationary wage increases, as wages are set with international competition in mind. This paper maps the origins of this export industry wage leadership model,

Foodborne pathogens in unpasteurized milk in Sweden

Raw milk may be a risk for public health if it is contaminated with zoonotic pathogens. To study the prevalencein unpasteurized milk from Swedish farms, bovine and small ruminant dairy farms were sampled. Since thesampling method and transport conditions may influence the outcome of analyses, efforts were made to optimizethe methodology. Culturing of bacteria was done from in-line milk filters col
