Virologic versus cytologic triage of women with equivocal pap smears: A meta-analysis of the accuracy to detect high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia
Background: The appropriate management of women with minor cytologic lesions in their cervix is unclear. We performed a meta-analysis to assess the accuracy of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing as an alternative to repeat cytology in women who had equivocal results on a previous Pap smear. Methods: Data were extracted from articles published between 1992 and 2002 that contained results of vir
Type 1 diabetes in Swedish bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus): signs of disease in both colonized and wild cyclic populations at peak density.
Colonized bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) originating from Sweden developed type 1 diabetes. Animals became polydipsic, glucosuric, and hyperglycemic and gradually developed a lethal ketoacidosis. Pancreas in animals with end-stage disease showed total destruction of islet cells. Interestingly, also a high proportion of wild bank voles in cyclic populations that were trapped at (or close to)
Mechanisms behind the faceting of catanionic vesicles by polycations: Chain crystallization and segregation
Vesicles composed of an anionic and a cationic surfactant, with a net negative charge, associate strongly with a hydrophobically modified polycation (LM200) and with an unmodified polycation with higher charge density (JR400), forming viscoelastic gel-like structures. Calorimetric results show that in these gels, LM200 induces a rise of the chain melting temperature (T-m) of the vesicles, whereas
Two doses of daclizumab in conjunction with low-dose cyclosporine, mycophenolate mofetil and steroids resulted in a low incidence of acute rejection after renal transplantation.
Binding of the complement inhibitor C4bp to serogroup B Neisseria meningitidis
Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus) is an important cause of meningitis and sepsis. Currently, there is no effective vaccine against serogroup B meningococcal infection. Host defense against neisseriae requires the complement system (C) as indicated by the fact that individuals deficient in properdin or late C components (C6-9) have an increased susceptibility to recurrent neisserial infections
How small polar molecules protect membrane systems against osmotic stress: The urea-water-phospholipid system
We investigate how a small polar molecule, urea, can act to protect a phospholipid bilayer system against osmotic stress. Osmotic stress can be caused by a dry environment, by freezing, or by exposure to aqueous systems with high osmotic pressure due to solutes like in saline water. A large number of organisms regularly experience osmotic stress, and it is a common response to produce small polar
Blue intensity and density from Northern Fennoscandian tree rings, exploring the potential to improve summer temperature reconstructions with earlywood information
Here we explore two new tree-ring parameters, derivedfrom measurements of wood density and blue intensity(BI). The new proxies show an increase in the interannualsummer temperature signal compared to establishedproxies, and present the potential to improve long-term performance. At high latitudes, where tree growth is mainlylimited by low temperatures, radiodensitometric measurementsof wood density
A Descriptive Study of Bacterial Load of Full-Thickness Surgical Wounds in Dermatologic Surgery.
BACKGROUND Surgical site infections (SSIs) after dermatologic surgery cause pain, prolong healing, result in unaesthetic complications, and lead to excessive use of antibiotics. The pathogenesis of wound infections is complex and is dependent on bacterial load and diversity, among several factors. OBJECTIVE To investigate bacterial dynamics at dermatosurgical sites at different time intervals and
Achieving Urban Resilience: Understanding and Tackling Disasters from a Local Perspective
The damage caused by a dramatic worldwide increase in so-called natural disasters is staggering, with the poor in developing countries being most at risk. This paper analyses: (a) the key variables and their causal relations that underlie the complex system of risk and disaster occurrence in slums; (b) the impacts of disasters on slums; (c) the strategies used by local people to cope with risk and
The importance of major histocompatibility complex class II genes for the development of autoimmune inflammation
In this thesis the role of major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) class II molecules in development of autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), was studied. By combining an experimental model for RA, collagen type II induced arthritis (CIA), with molecular biology methods the importance of polymorphism in Mhc class II genes for disease development was investigated. The Mhc region con
Phototoxicity
Phototoxicity occurs when a substance is toxic only under the action of light, and can, depending on the mechanism of toxic action, be divided into type I and type II phototoxicity. Other types are sometimes recongnized, and sometimes toxicity occurs through more than one mechanism. Plants often use phototoxins for their defense. They may be harmful to man, but also exploited for medical treatment
Patch antennas based on a pair of DPS and SNG metamaterial
In this talk we show some potential applications of a pair of conventional double positive (DPS) and single negative (SNG) metamaterial blocks for specific patch antennas. We propose two designs. One is a 900- and 1800-MHz dual-band rectangular patch antenna filled with a pair of juxtaposed DPS and mu-negative (MNG) metamaterial blocks. With proper constitutive parameters and filling ratio of the
Feedback Scheduling of Control Tasks
The paper presents a feedback scheduling mechanism in the context of co-design of the scheduler and the control tasks. We are particularly interested in controllers where the execution time may change abruptly between different modes, such as in hybrid controllers. The proposed solution attempts to keep the CPU utilization at a high level, avoid overload, and distribute the computing resources eve

Creaky fillers and speaker attitude: data from Swedish
Spontaneous data from Swedish are presented which suggest that ‘creaky voice’ associated with the filler EH ‘UH’ is related to the realization of the speaker attitude ‘uncertainty’ in the sense of ‘indecisiveness’ as regards the optimal way to linguistically code referents and predicates. It is suggested that creaky fillers express a certain degree of speaker indecisiveness as regards the most rel

First steps towards a computational theory of autism
A computational model with three interacting components for context sensitive re-inforcement learning, context processing and automation can autonomously learn a focus attention and a shift attention task. The performance of the model is similar to that of normal children, and when a single parameter is changed, the performance on the two tasks approaches that of autistic children.
