The states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar) form the largest destination for labour migration in the global South. In all of these states, however, the majority of the working population is composed of temporary, migrant workers with no citizenship rights. The cheap and transitory labour power these workers provide has created t
While generally kept out of sight, government surveillance ostensibly to ensure the security of the state from threats (both foreign and domestic) is a hallmark of the American national security state. What types of surveillance are legally allowable is constantly contested as new technologies emerge that must be tested against American constitutional principles and international law. In the wake
The aim of this thesis was to reveal details of the interspecific hybridization among bryophytes as exemplified by Sphagnum capillifolium and S. quinquefarium. I used a combination of morphometric and molecular methods, and cultivation experiments to (1) identify hybrid gametophytes, (2) reveal the contribution of each of the parents to the genomes of hybrids, (3) study the fertility of primary hy
Ett stort problem efter det briWhen Britain decided, in 1968, to terminate its official colonial presence in the Persian (Arabian) Gulf as of 1971, this action prompted the Gulf Arab States (Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and Oman) to start the search for a form of partnership that would bring them together to better cope with the insecurity and danger surrounding them and their regimes. A key probl
Iterative decoding methods allow efficient decoding of long codes that are composed of smaller component codes. As a result reliable communication can be achieved with low decoding complexity even for rates close to Shannon capacity. This makes iteratively decodable codes a very attractive object of study in modern coding theory. This thesis focuses on different kinds of cycles which appear in th
This paper uses panel data on bilateral FDI flows in the European Union to empirically analyze the impact of labor and corporate taxations on FDI decisions. While the effect of corporate taxes on FDI is well documented, the impact of labor taxes on FDI has been neglected. This is surprising since labor taxation may influence FDI as well. The reason for this is that taxation of labor affects the pr
Anthropogenic radionuclide concentrations have been determined in seawater and sediment samples collected in 1991, 1994 and 1996 in the Eurasian Arctic shelf and interior. Global fallout, releases from European reprocessing plants and the Chernobyl accident are identified as the three main sources. From measurements in the Eurasian shelf seas it is concluded that the total input of Cs-134, Cs-137
One of the goals pursued in the present research was to understand the nuclear phenomena (such as rotational bands, their backbending and termination, deformation, pairing correlations, etc.) using different views provided by different nuclear models. The employed models complement each other: spherical shell model provided the laboratory frame description, the intrinsic frame description was prov

The Virgin Mary has always stood out in the Christian scenery, yet in ever-changing guises. This study explores the characterization of the Virgin in the poetic works of Romanos the Melodist (ca. 490–560), the great composer of the so-called kontakion. Written for liturgical use, these dramatic songs soon became well-known and immensely popular. The most famous ones reveal a remarkable interest in
