Study of safety culture at two air traffic control centres

The aim of this short paper is to present an ongoing joint research project, Human Factors in Air Navigation Services (HUFA), between the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration and Lund University. Results from the study will only be given very briefly. The project focuses on human and organizational factors and safety in air traffic control.

Finite Element Analysis and Design of Experiments in Engineering Design

Projects with the objective of introducing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) into the early phases of the design process have previously been carried out at the Department of Machine Design, see e.g. the Doctoral thesis by Burman [13]. These works clearly highlight the usefulness of introducing design analysis early in the design process. According to Bjärnemo and Burman [10] the most significant adva

A Phenotypic Screening Assay Identifies Modulators of Diamond Blackfan Anemia

Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a bone marrow failure syndrome caused by mutations in ribosomal protein genes. Pathogenic mechanisms are poorly understood but involve severely reduced proliferation of erythroid precursors. Because current DBA therapies are ineffective and associated with severe side effects, disease-specific therapies are urgently needed. We hypothesized that druggable molecular

Multivoxel 1H MR spectroscopy biometrics for preoprerative differentiation between brain tumors

Purpose To investigate multivoxel proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1HMRS) biometrics for preoperative differentiation and prognosis of patients with brain metastases (MET), low-(LGG) and high grade glioma (HGG). Methods Thirty-five patients (15 HGG, 9 LGG and 11 MET) were included. Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Imaging(1H-MRSI) data was assessed and neurochemical profiles for metab

Antibodies targeting human IL1RAP (IL1R3) show therapeutic effects in xenograft models of acute myeloid leukemia.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is associated with a poor survival rate, and there is an urgent need for novel and more efficient therapies, ideally targeting AML stem cells that are essential for maintaining the disease. The interleukin 1 receptor accessory protein (IL1RAP; IL1R3) is expressed on candidate leukemic stem cells in the majority of AML patients, but not on normal hematopoietic stem cell

Mass transfer between phases in microchannels : A review

The multiphase micro-structured devices such as microchannels have been recently taken into consideration to replace the conventional equipment in different applications. The mass transfer coefficients and the interfacial area in the multiphase microchannels are much larger than those in the conventional equipment. This paper reviews the experimental studies on mass transfer in gas-liquid and liqu

Profiling of the plasma proteome across different stages of human heart failure

Heart failure (HF) is a major public health problem characterized by inability of the heart to maintain sufficient output of blood. The systematic characterization of circulating proteins across different stages of HF may provide pathophysiological insights and identify therapeutic targets. Here we report application of aptamer-based proteomics to identify proteins associated with prospective HF i

Bulk Acoustic Wave Activated Droplet Generation and Isolation

On-demand droplet generation from a continuously flowing stream of aqueous phase has profound applications in dropletbased microfluidics for rare event encapsulation studies. Here, we present acoustic relocation-based droplet generation from co-flowing immiscible fluids in an on-demand manner using bulk acoustic wave (BAW). After on-demand droplet generation, droplets are isolated using the same a

Genome-wide association and Mendelian randomisation analysis provide insights into the pathogenesis of heart failure

Heart failure (HF) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A small proportion of HF cases are attributable to monogenic cardiomyopathies and existing genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have yielded only limited insights, leaving the observed heritability of HF largely unexplained. We report results from a GWAS meta-analysis of HF comprising 47,309 cases and 930,014 controls. T

Functional characterization of a multi-cancer risk locus on chr5p15.33 reveals regulation of TERT by ZNF148

Genome wide association studies (GWAS) have mapped multiple independent cancer susceptibility loci to chr5p15.33. Here, we show that fine-mapping of pancreatic and testicular cancer GWAS within one of these loci (Region 2 in CLPTM1L) focuses the signal to nine highly correlated SNPs. Of these, rs36115365-C associated with increased pancreatic and testicular but decreased lung cancer and melanoma r

A Retardation Factor Considering Solute Transfer Between Mobile and Immobile Water in Porous Media

In advective-dispersive simulations of aquifers, retardation factors using linear adsorption isotherms are commonly employed to represent the adsorption-desorption process for solutes in soil. In particular, the retardation factors that use entire pore space (total porosity) or effective pore space (effective porosity) are widely used. Although another retardation factor that describes solute tran

Projekt FIRE21 - Sammanställning workshop med Hovedstadens Beredskab

I denna rapport sammanställer vi resultaten från en workshop med Hovedstadens Beredskab i Danmark. Workshopen utfördes som en del av projektet FIRE21 (Fire and Rescue Services in the 21st Century). I projektet studerar vi (forskare från Sverige, Norge och Danmark) hur räddningstjänster löser problem i så kallade problemlösande nätverk. Vi ser dessa som nödvändiga för att lösa problem i dagens och

In Vivo Photopolymerization : Achieving Detailed Conducting Patterns for Bioelectronics

Bioelectronics holds great potential as therapeutics, but introducing conductive structures within the body poses great challenges. While implanted rigid and substrate-bound electrodes often result in inflammation and scarring in vivo, they outperform the in situ-formed, more biocompatible electrodes by providing superior control over electrode geometry. For example, one of the most researched met

A UNIFIED QUANTILE FRAMEWORK FOR NONLINEAR HETEROGENEOUS TRANSCRIPTOME-WIDE ASSOCIATIONS

Transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS) are powerful tools for identifying gene-level associations by integrating genome-wide association studies and gene expression data. However, most TWAS methods focus on linear associations between genes and traits, ignoring the complex nonlinear relationships that may be present in biological systems. To address this limitation, we propose a novel frame

Pause for Thought : Systemic Functional Units and the Dynamics of Writing

A central challenge in linguistics pertains to understanding how the polished, static form of a written text emerges from the messy, moment-by-moment decisions of the writer. While the structures of finished texts have been extensively theorized, and the real-time cognitive processes of writing have been widely studied, the relationship between these real-time processes and the functional linguist

Keystone protist suppression triggers mesopredator release and biotic homogenization in complex soil microbial communities

The keystone species concept holds that certain members of an ecological community, despite their low abundance, exert disproportionately large effects on species diversity and composition. In microbial ecology, experimental validation of this concept has been limited because targeted removal of individual species remains technically challenging. Here, we developed a procedure to test the keystone
