Lateral variation of the native passive film on super duplex stainless steel resolved by synchrotron hard X-ray photoelectron emission microscopy

A native passive film on 25Cr-7Ni super duplex stainless steel was analyzed using synchrotron hard X-ray photoemission electron microscopy, focusing on variations between individual grains of ferrite and austenite phases. The film consists of an oxide inner layer and an oxyhydroxide outer layer, in total 2.3 nm thick. The Cr content is higher in the outer than the inner layer, ca. 80 % on average.

Systematic experimental study for optimized hydrogen production of Ni/CeO2 prepared by incipient wetness impregnation technique

In this present work, different supports (CeO2/ZrO2) and different Ni contents based catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method and tested in the methane steam reforming (MSR) reaction. The prepared catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The XRD analysis confirmed the prepared Ni/CeO2 samples have a pure crystal structu

Sub-Kelvin hysteresis of the dilanthanide single-molecule magnet Tb2ScN@ C80

Magnetic hysteresis is a direct manifestation of nonequilibrium physics that has to be understood if a system is to be used for information storage and processing. The dilanthanide endofullerene Tb2ScN@C80 is shown to be a single-molecule magnet with a remanence time on the order of 100 s at 400 mK. Three different temperature-dependent relaxation barriers are discerned. The lowest 1 K barrier is

Longitudinal Changes in Kidney Function Estimated from Cystatin C and Its Association with Mortality in Elderly Women

Background/Aims: Prospective data on age-related changes in kidney function are required, especially since the current Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) definition has been suggested to classify a large number of elderly people with CKD. Objective: This study, a complement to our previous Cr-based study in the same cohort, is aimed at evaluating cystatin C (cysC)-based changes in ki

Days absent from work as a result of complications associated with type 2 diabetes : Evidence from 20 years of linked national registry data in Sweden

Aims: To analyse days absent from work related to individual microvascular, macrovascular and other complications of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and to identify key drivers of absence. Materials and methods: National health and socio-economic individual-level data were analysed for the years 1997 to 2016 for people with T2D, and age-, sex- and residential region-matched controls (5:1) using linkage to S

Development of a polygenic risk score to improve screening for fracture risk : A genetic risk prediction study

BACKGROUND: Since screening programs identify only a small proportion of the population as eligible for an intervention, genomic prediction of heritable risk factors could decrease the number needing to be screened by removing individuals at low genetic risk. We therefore tested whether a polygenic risk score for heel quantitative ultrasound speed of sound (SOS)-a heritable risk factor for osteopo

Time trends in pediatric fractures in a Swedish city from 1950 to 2016

Background and purpose — As previous studies indicate time trends in pediatric fracture incidence, we followed the incidence in a Swedish city between 1950 and 2016. Patients and methods — Malmö city, Sweden had 322,574 inhabitants in 2015. We used diagnosis registry, charts, and radiographs of the only city hospital to classify fractures in individuals < 16 years in 2014–2016, and compared these

A numerical study of heat transfer effects and aerodynamic noise reduction in superheated steam flow passing a temperature and pressure regulation valve

Steam is a common medium in thermal engineering. When it flows through a throttling element, the aerodynamic noise may occur due to the disturbance. In this investigation, superheated steam flowing through a Venturi tube, one of the main parts in a temperature and pressure regulation valve, at different thermal conditions is studied to analyze to effects of heat transfer on the acoustic power. Wit

The effect of maternal body mass index on duration of induced labor

Introduction: Obese primiparous women with induction of labor are at high risk for a cesarean section. There are contradictory results regarding time in induced labor in relation to maternal body mass index (BMI). It is important to characterize the course of induced labor to prevent unnecessary cesarean section. We aimed to evaluate whether the duration of labor was associated with maternal BMI i

Extracellular cold-inducible RNA-binding protein regulates neutrophil extracellular trap formation and tissue damage in acute pancreatitis

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play a key role in the development of acute pancreatitis (AP). In the present study, we studied the role of extracellular cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (eCIRP), a novel damage-associated-molecular-pattern molecule, in severe AP. C57BL/6 mice underwent retrograde infusion of taurocholate into the pancreatic duct. C23, an eCIRP inhibitor, was given 1 h prio

Geographical and sociodemographic differences in discontinuation of medication for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – a cross-classified multilevel analysis of individual heterogeneity and discriminatory accuracy (MAIHDA)

Background: While discontinuation of COPD maintenance medication is a known problem, the proportion of patients with discontinuation and its geographical and sociodemographic distribution are so far unknown in Sweden. Therefore, we analyse this question by applying an innovative approach called multilevel analysis of individual heterogeneity and discriminatory accuracy (MAIHDA). Patients and Metho

Global health policy in the 21st century : Challenges and opportunities to arrest the global disability burden from musculoskeletal health conditions

The profound burden of disease associated with musculoskeletal health conditions is well established. Despite the unequivocal disability burden and personal and societal consequences, relative to other non-communicable diseases (NCDs), system-level responses for musculoskeletal conditions that are commensurate with their burden have been lacking nationally and globally. Health policy priorities an

Thermodynamic and exergoeconomic analysis of a novel CO2 based combined cooling, heating and power system

In this paper, a novel combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) system consisting of a supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power cycle, a transcritical carbon dioxide (tCO2) power cycle with a carbon dioxide based refrigeration cycle, and a direct heating (DH) system is proposed. In the novel system, the waste heat from sCO2 power cycle is recovered by the tCO2 power cycle to generate additional

Operando time- and space-resolved high-energy X-ray diffraction measurement to understand hydrogen-microstructure interactions in duplex stainless steel

Local strain development in the microstructure of a commercial 25Cr-7Ni super duplex stainless steel was mapped using high-energy x-ray diffraction during cathodic hydrogen charging under constant uniaxial load. The infusion of hydrogen resulted in tensile strains in austenite grains, one order of magnitude larger than those in the ferrite. Most strain evolution occurred at the near-surface, with

Prediction of mass transfer coefficient of the continuous phase in a structured packed extraction column in the presence of SiO2 nanoparticles

In this experimental study, mass transfer and hydrodynamic parameters of water/kerosene/acetic acid system in a packed column were investigated, in which the mass transfer direction was set from the continuous phase (saturated water of kerosene and acetic acid) to the dispersed phase (saturated kerosene of water) in all the experiments. To assess the impact of nanoparticles on mass transfer, the e

Entropy Study on the Enhanced Heat Transfer Mechanism of the Coupling of Detached and Spiral Vortex Fields in Spirally Corrugated Tubes

The present work numerically studied the enhanced heat transfer mechanism of the coupled fields of detached and spiral vortices in symmetrical and asymmetrical spirally corrugated tubes. The heat transfer and viscous dissipation were analyzed by evaluating the entropy combined with the flow patterns, and the global entropy generation rate was analyzed by considering the local Nusselt number and fr

The transport and thermodynamic characteristics of thermally oscillating phenomena in a buoyancy-driven supercritical fuel flow

To ameliorate the thermal management of a regenerative cooling system in an advanced engine, the turbulence characteristics and entropy generation in a buoyancy-driven supercritical hydrocarbon fuel flow are numerically explored in detail. Several common buoyancy criteria (Gr/Re2, Gr/Re2.7 and Grq/Grth) are established and a three-dimensional numerical model is solved with an advanced LES model. T

Numerical investigations on the effect of convex-dimple streamwise arrangements on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of rectangular convex-dimple-grooved channels

In this article, the effects of convex dimple streamwise arrangements on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of protrusion-grooved channels are determined, and five streamwise positions of convex dimples are considered. In addition, research on the transverse-circular-protrusion-grooved channel is also performed to serve as a contrast. The results indicate that replacing the transverse-circ
