The study is based on the major stadium projects that have been implemented in Sweden in recent years. Only in the Stockholm area have two major sports stadiums been built and one major sports stadium have been demolished. Projects like these are very kapital-intensive, so it is important for those involve

Reply to commentaries

In our response, we address four themes arising from the commentaries. First, we discuss the distinction between cognition and metacognition and show how to draw it within our framework. Next, we explain how metacognition differs from social cognition. The underlying mechanisms of metacognitive development are then elucidated in terms of interaction patterns. Finally, we consider measures of metac

Conceptions of Decision Quality and Effectiveness in Decision Processes According to Administrative Officers and Investigators Making Decisions for Others in Three Swedish Public Authorities

This study investigated conceptions of decision quality and efficiency held by administrative officers from three Swedish public authorities (the Tax Board, the Social Insurance Agency, and the Police Authority) with respect to decisions made for other people. Research on conceptions of decision quality held by decision makers making decisions for themselves shows that decision outcome is emphasiz

Investigating hardware micro-instruction folding in a Java embedded processor

Bytecode folding is an effective technique for speeding up execution in Java virtual machines. This paper investigates a hardware implementation of the aforementioned technique on BlueJEP, a Java embedded processor. Since BlueJEP is a micro-programmed stack machine, we adopt a micro-instruction oriented approach, folding up to four microinstructions (corresponding to up to four bytecodes, on occas

Higher Education: Commodity or Space for Learning: modelling contradictions in educational practices

In this article the authors reflect upon and critically examine signs of a contradiction in higher education which they discuss in terms of the tension between 'use value' and 'exchange value'. Use value here represents learning as something valuable ‘in itself’ whereas exchange value represents learning as an achievement of grades and credits to be ‘traded’ on a market. Their aim in this article

Simplicity vs. complexity in the logistics discipline - a paradigmatic discourse

Today one could argue that most of the logistics research available has a strong connection to the positivistic paradigm where there is a great emphasis on simplicity in both the research conducted and in the solutions produced. The overall ability to design, plan and control is promoted by the researchers to a great extent. Consequently, firms invest money, time and resources in solutions, based

Beyond the walls of semiconductor fabs: energy intensity of high-grade materials

The increasing semiconductor functionality relies on more complex integrated circuits with higher component densities. Miniaturisation and its implications on resource consumption in semiconductor facilities have been fairly well explored in a number of life cycle assessment (LCA) studies, which show that, in spite of the growing product complexity, resource intensities per product unit are gradua

Intestinal damage in enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli infection.

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) infection leads to marked intestinal injury. Sigmoid colon obtained from two children during EHEC infection exhibited abundant TUNEL-positive cells. To define which bacterial virulence factors contribute to intestinal injury the presence of Shiga toxin-2 (Stx2), intimin and the type III secretion system were correlated with symptoms and intestinal damage.

Sustainable Development In Practice - Infrastructure for the third generation mobile telephone system in Sweden

The infrastructure for the third generation of mobile telephony, UMTS, is under construction in Sweden. Within three years four operators were to build competing systems to cover 99,98 % of the population. The case of the 3G infrastructure illustrates how the sustainability issues are handled in planning and environmental management, with conflicting goals between institutional levels and compet

Slaps, Punches, Pinches -- But not Violence: Boundary Work in Nursing Homes for the Elderly

The article presents an analysis of boundary work within the context of care for the elderly, where violence appears to be widespread though still relatively unacknowledged. By resorting to certain descriptive – often jocular – modes, the staff designate aggressive acts committed by patients as 'non-violent'. This occurs although intent, responsibility, and injury – all common criteria associated

The aim of this article is to analyse verbally portrayed experiences of 27 survivors of the 1990’s war in northwestern Bosnia. My focus is on describing how the interviewees portray the social phenomenon of «victimhood» and on analysing the discursive patterns that contribute to construction of the category «victim». When, after the war, different actors claim this «victim» status, it sparks a com

Evaluating life: Working with ethical dilemmas in education for sustainable development

Codifications of human rights are widely understood as politically established instruments for evaluating human life. The call for such an apparatus emerges as a response to the age-old problem of social organization, constituting – in extension – a means by which to cope with the overall problem of survival. However, evaluating life is inherently problematic. It is problematic as it presupposes a

Retinal functional alterations in mice lacking intermediate filament proteins glial fibrillary acidic protein and vimentin.

Vimentin (Vim) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) are important components of the intermediate filament (IF) (or nanofilament) system of astroglial cells. We conducted full-field electroretinogram (ERG) recordings and found that whereas photoreceptor responses (a-wave) were normal in uninjured GFAP(-/-)Vim(-/-) mice, b-wave amplitudes were increased. Moreover, we found that Kir (inward rec
