Autumn migratory orientation and route choice in early and late dunlins Calidris alpina captured at a stopover site in Alaska

We investigated the migratory orientation of early and late captured dunlins, Calidris alpina, by recording their migratory activity in circular orientation cages during autumn at a staging site in southwest Alaska and performed route simulations to the wintering areas. Two races of dunlins breeding in Alaska have different wintering grounds in North America (Pacific Northwest), and East Asia. Dun

Beta secretase 1-dependent amyloid precursor protein processing promotes excessive vascular sprouting through NOTCH3 signalling

Amyloid beta peptides (Aβ) proteins play a key role in vascular pathology in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) including impairment of the blood–brain barrier and aberrant angiogenesis. Although previous work has demonstrated a pro-angiogenic role of Aβ, the exact mechanisms by which amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing and endothelial angiogenic signalling cascades interact in AD remain a largely un

The immunosuppressant FK506 ameliorates ischaemic damage in the rat brain

The effect of the immunosuppressant FK506 on ischaemic neuronal damage was studied in a rat model of transient cerebral ischemia induced by occlusion of both common carotid arteries in combination with hypotension for 10 min. Neuronal damage was assessed morphologically after 4 days of recovery. Treatment with FK506, given at a dose of 2 mg kg-1 by intraperitoneal injections 30 min prior to ischem

Intracerebral microdialysis of glutamate and aspartate in two vascular territories after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage

CEREBRAL ISCHEMIA ASSOCIATED with subarachnoid hemorrhage may have severe consequences for neuronal functioning. The excitatory amino acid neurotransmitters glutamate and aspartate have been shown to he of particular importance for ischemia and ischemic neuronal damage. For seven patients who underwent early surgery for ruptured intracranial aneurysms, intracerebral microdialysis of glutamate and

Persistent Translocation of Ca2+/Calmodulin‐Dependent Protein Kinase II to Synaptic Junctions in the Vulnerable Hippocampal CA1 Region Following Transient Ischemia

Abstract: The influence of brain ischemia on the subcellular distribution and activity of Ca2+/calmodulin‐dependent protein kinase II (CaM kinase II) was studied in various cortical rat brain regions during and after cerebral ischemia. Total CaM kinase II immunoreactivity (IR) and calmodulin binding in the crude synaptosomal fraction of all regions studied increase but decrease in the microsomal a

Casein Kinase II Activity in the Postischemic Rat Brain Increases in Brain Regions Resistant to Ischemia and Decreases in Vulnerable Areas

Abstract: Casein kinase II (CKII) is a protein kinase acting in the intracellular cascade of reactions activated by growth factor receptors, and that has a profound influence on cell proliferation and survival. In this investigation, we studied the changes in the activity and levels of CKII in the rat brain exposed to 10. 15 and 20 min of transient forebrain ischemia followed by variable periods o

Changes in protein tyrosine phosphorylation in the rat brain after cerebral ischemia in a model of ischemic tolerance

A brief period of sublethal cerebral ischemia, followed by several days of recovery, renders the brain resistant to a subsequent lethal ischemic insult, a phenomenon termed ischemic preconditioning or tolerance. Ischemic tolerance was established in the rat two-vessel occlusion model of ischemia, induced by occlusion of both carotid arteries in combination with hypotension. Ischemic preconditionin

Activation of the extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase cascade in the hippocampal CA1 region in a rat model of global cerebral ischemic preconditioning

A short period of sublethal preconditioning ischemia (3 min) followed by two days of reperfusion provides almost complete protection against ischemic cell death induced by a second (9 min) lethal ischemic episode. Here, we have investigated the extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase kinase and extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase, two kinases known to activate gene transcription an

Cerebral extracellular calcium activity in severe hypoglycemia : Relation to extracellular potassium and energy state

The changes in extracellular Ca2+ (Cae) and K+ (Ke) activities were studied in the rat brain during insulin-induced hypoglycemia. At about the time of onset of isoelectric EEG in severe insulin-induced hypoglycemia (300-g male Wistar rats under 70% N2O anaesthesia), there was an increase in Ke which, at ∼13 mM, was associated with a fall in Cae. Ke peaked at 48 ± 12 mM, and Cae at 0.18 ± 0.28 mM.

Protection against ischemia-induced neuronal damage by the α2-adrenoceptor antagonist idazoxan : influence of time of administration and possible mechanisms of action

The protective effect of the α2-receptor antagonist idazoxan against neuronal damage in the neocortex and in the hippocampal CA1 region was studied in rats exposed to 10 min of incomplete forebrain ischemia. When administered i.v. immediately after ischemia (0.1 mg/kg) and subsequently for 6 h (10 μg/kg/min), idazoxan significantly reduced neuronal damage in the hippocampus (from 84 to 26%) and in

Tradeoffs in expressed major histocompatibility complex diversity seen on a macro‐evolutionary scale among songbirds

To survive organisms must defend themselves against pathogens. Classical Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) genes play a key role in pathogen defense by encoding molecules involved in pathogen recognition. MHC gene diversity influences the variety of pathogens individuals can recognize and respond to and has consequently been a popular genetic marker for disease resistance in ecology and evolu

Dual-band fluorosensor for discriminating non-eating from algae-eating zooplankton in aquatic environments

We present a fluorosensor for the detection of laser-induced autofluorescence of zooplankton in marine environments. The sensor uses an inexpensive 410 nm laser diode as excitation source and simultaneously measures two fluorescence bands, 500-550 nm and 675-725 nm, using two identical 16-bit linear array detectors. We show continuous measurements at 200 Hz of zooplankton swimming through a water

Standardrutterna räknas också på sommaren (sedan 1996)men täcker hWe present the results of the Swedish Bird Survey, a project run by the Department of Biology, Lund University, as a part of the National Monitoring Programme of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The results for 2022 include data from: 546 winter point counts in 2021/2022 (47th winter), ofwhich 254 were carried out during the Christmas/New Year count, 209 summer point count routes (48th

Entomological Scheimpflug lidar for estimating unique insect classes in-situ field test from Ivory Coast

Acquisition of entomological data with high-frequency lidar is an emerging research field in rapid development. The technique offers very high numbers of observations per time unit, suitable for statistical models. In this work, we use a near-infrared Scheimpflug lidar with a sampling frequency of 3.5 kHz to assess the activity of free flying organisms. In-situ measurements were done during the ra

Det går inte att utesluta att med en utökad kunskapsToday, the concept of sustainability is central in several housing projects, not to mention the many other socio-technological projects for which the concept is a directive. In this study I problematize the relation of the paradigm of sustainable development to one of its main “pillars”, the social dimension, and how this can relate to the greatest challenge of our generation – climate change. As

Modifications of Hippocampal Circuits and Early Disruption of Adult Neurogenesis in the Tg2576 Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease

At advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease, cognitive dysfunction is accompanied by severe alterations of hippocampal circuits that may largely underlie memory impairments. However, it is likely that anatomical remodeling in the hippocampus may start long before any cognitive alteration is detected. Using the well-described Tg2576 mouse model of Alzheimer's disease that develops progressive age-dep

Den dolda samäganderättens konstrThe need for economic protection in family law is the main reason for the cre-ated concept of hidden co-ownership in case law. Given the special communi-ty that arises in a marriage or cohabitation relationship, it can be seen as a nat-ural starting point that property purchased for joint use by one person, with contributions from the other, should be owned jointly. The construction of hidden co-o
