The nature of stars with a common origin: clues from metallicity, elemental abundances, and kinematics

Popular Abstract in English The aim of this thesis is to search for the origins of groups stars with similar kinematics making use of their chemical information. Based on measured elemental abundances from high-resolution spectra, a modified chemical tagging method is used to identify the potential cluster members in two cases. In first case, we employ this method to search for the lost siblings oMost of field stars originate from dissolved star clusters. If the gas cloud is well mixed the stars in the cluster are expected to be chemically homogenous. Although the original kinematical information of a star may be lost under the Galactic dynamic evolution, the chemical signatures are preserved in the form of elemental abundances in individual low-mass stars. The present-day distribution of

Service Life Assessment of Harbor Structures - Case studies of chloride ingress into concrete and sheet piling corrosion rates

Popular Abstract in English The two most used building materials in harbor structures are undoubtedly steel and concrete. These two materials are often combined in the structures of wharfs and quays where most steel sheet pile walls have cap beams of reinforced concrete. The degradation processes of these structures must be taken into account both when designing new structures and when inspecting The two most used building materials in harbor structures are undoubtedly steel and concrete. Inventing topoi in the progymnasmata: : Kefalaion as the organon of rhetoric

Rhetoric is a teaching tradition. The rhetorical exercises in the progymnasmata are the main method in which rhetoric has been taught throughout history. These exercises are organized according to difficulty, the material covered, the rhetorical genre, the canons of rhetoric and the disposition of the speech. The main organizing principle is however the topoi for inventing the speech or text in ea

Urbana Hängsel + Tornhuset=sant? Två byggnader i en komplicerad relation

This bachelor thesis examines the relationship between two buildings situated at Universitetsholmen in Malmö: Tornhuset (1910) and its modern extension Urban Hinges (2015). Together, the two buildings form World Maritime University. The modern extension has received a great deal of attention, both positive and negative, in traditional as well as in social media. Several statements suggest that vi

Iterative Design of a User Interface Adapted for People with Dementia

In today society people live longer and along with the rising life expectancy chronic diseases, like dementia, will become more common. The demand on more and better assistive technology, technology that ease the everyday life for the persons with dementia, will increase. The assistive technology currently recommended by occupational therapists are mainly low-technological solutions. There exist

Leadership Communication as Materiality, Embodiment, and Aesthetics

The leadership literature has been faulted for framing leaders (and followers) as rational and disembodied information processers. This chapter presents a review of studies that go against this tendency by focusing on how materiality, embodiment, and aesthetics are involved in leadership communication. A number of different perspectives are highlighted in relation to the three focal themes, as wel

Integrating mission, logistics, and task planning for skills-based robot control in industrial kitting applications

This paper presents an integrated cognitive robotics systemfor industrial kitting operations in a modern factory setting. The robot system combines low-level robot control and execution monitoring with automated mission and task planning, and a logistics planner which communicates with the factory’smanufacturing execution system. The system has been implemented and tested on a series of automotive k

Coarse-Grained Modelling of Protein Adsorption

The adsorption of proteins is a very common phenomenon, happening almost always when a protein solution comes into contact with a solid. However, it is far from always clear what the results of adsorption will be in terms of adsorbed amount, protein orientation, and protein conformation. In this work, the adsorption of two proteins – histatin 5 and fibrinogen – has been studied using coarse-graineThe adsorption of proteins is a very common phenomenon, happening almost always when a protein solution comes into contact with a solid.
