On decision optimality of terrorism risk mitigation measures for iconic bridges

This paper describes the assessment of the cost efficiency of risk mitigation strategies for terrorist attacks with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) for an iconic bridge structure. The assessment is performed with a decision theoretical framework building upon very recent advances in the COST Action TU1402 on Quantifying the Value of Structural Heath Monitoring. The decision scenario is formula

Sweden's Parliamentary Democracy at 100

This article assesses how Swedish parliamentary democracy works today, almost one hundred years into its history. Our main research question is whether the transformation of the Swedish party system since the 1980s—and especially since 2010, when the populist-radical-right Sweden Democrats entered parliament—has altered the way parliamentary democracy works. We provide new evidence on Sweden’s cha

Norfloxacin degradation by a green carbon black-Ti/SnO2-Sb electrochemical system in saline water

This work aims to degrade a typical antibiotic Norfloxacin (NOR) in saline water with a novel green carbon black based Ti/SnO2-Sb electrochemical catalysis system (TSSC), with Ti/SnO2-Sb as anode (TSSA) and a novel carbon black air diffusion electrode as cathode (CBAC). An electrochemical system with TSSA and a platinum carbon (Pt/C) cathode was used as control (TSSP). The removal ratio, degradati

Genetic diversity and evolution in eukaryotic phytoplankton : Revelations from population genetic studies

Eukaryotic phytoplankton exhibit an enormous species richness, displaying a range of phylogenetic, morphological and physiological diversity. Yet, until recently, very little was known about the diversity, genetic variation and evolutionary processes within species and populations. An approach to explore this diversity and to understand evolution of phytoplankton is to use population genetics as a

Hybrid magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with tunable field-directed self-assembly

We describe the synthesis of hybrid magnetic ellipsoidal nanoparticles that consist of a mixture of two different iron oxide phases, hematite (α-Fe2O3) and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3), and characterize their magnetic field-driven self-assembly. We demonstrate that the relative amount of the two phases can be adjusted in a continuous way by varying the reaction time during the synthesis, leading to strongl

Posterior cingulate cortex in familiar Alzheimer’s disease: A clinicopathological and brain imaging study

The degenerative process in Alzheimer´s disease (AD) follows a temporal and topographic pattern of early and accentuated involvement of temporal limbic, parietal and posterior cingulate cortices. We have studied a pedigree with four generations suffering from early onset AD linked to a presenilin-1 gene mutation. This family now contains 7 AD cases, neuropathologically confirmed in four cases of t

Pharmacokinetics of carbetocin, a long-acting oxytocin analogue, in nonpregnant women

The safety and pharmacokinetics of carbetocin, a long-acting oxytocin analogue, were studied in 25 healthy nonpregnant women. The distribution and elimination half-lives of a 0.4-mg intravenous dose were found to be 5.5 ± 1.6 minutes and 41 ± 11.9 minutes, respectively. Similarly, the half-lives of a 0.8-mg intravenous dose were found to be 6.1 ± 1.2 minutes and 42.7 ± 10.6 minutes. Approximately

The fetal thymus has a unique genomic copy number profile resulting from physiological T cell receptor gene rearrangement

Somatic mosaicism, the presence of genetically distinct cells within an organism, has been increasingly associated with human morbidity, ranging from being a cause of rare syndromes to a risk factor for common disorders such as malignancy and cardiovascular disease. Previous studies interrogating the normal prevalence of somatic mosaicism have focused on adults. We here present an estimate of the

Inductive coupling matrix of a multiconductor system for a winding-on-core prototype

Broadband circuit models for electric machines are effective means to understand, predict, and control the phenomenon of conducted Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) from immunity/susceptibility perspective. These models should cover the capacitive and inductive coupling behavior of the component along the frequency range of interest. Circuit models used under generic SPICE simulation softwares ar

Recurrent studies of chloride ingress in uncracked marine concrete at various exposure times and - elevations

Uncracked reinforced concrete slabs were field exposed mounted on a floating pontoon and partly submerged for 5 years at the Swedish west coast. The total chloride ingress was analysed at various exposure times at 3 elevations representing a submerged, a splash, and an atmospheric exposure zone. The concrete mixtures varied in w/c ratio, type of cement, and amount and type of pozzolan used in the

Dissolved oxygen controller based on on-line measurements of ammonia combining feed-forward and feedback

As the largest single energy-consuming component in most biological wastewater treatment systems, control of aeration is of great interest seen from an energy savings point of view. This paper suggests a simple way of using on-line ammonium measurements to control aeration in a pre-denitrification plant by controlling the dissolved oxygen setpoint. The controller works primarily by feed-forward ba

Characterization of airborne ice-nucleation-active bacteria and bacterial fragments

Some bacteria have the unique capacity of synthesising ice-nucleation-active (INA) proteins and exposing them at their outer membrane surface. As INA bacteria enter the atmosphere, they may impact the formation of clouds and precipitation. We studied members of airborne bacterial communities for their capacity to catalyse ice formation and we report on the excretion of INA proteins by airborne Pse

Antibacterial activity of the nitrovinylfuran G1 (Furvina) and its conversion products

2-Bromo-5-(2-bromo-2-nitrovinyl)furan (G1 or Furvina) is an antimicrobial with a direct reactivity against thiol groups. It is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi. By reacting with thiol groups it causes direct damage to proteins but, as a result, is very short-living and interconverts into an array of reaction products. Our aim was to characterize

Historical roots of the dual-earner model: Women’s labour force participation in Sweden, 1870–1960

Today, Sweden has one of the highest female labour force participation rates in the developed world, but how deep are the roots of women’s involvement in gainful employment? In this article, I present new estimates of women’s labour force participation rate between 1870 and 1960, the time when the country shifted from a predominantly agrarian economy to an industrial and services-based society. Th

Impact of variations in residential use of household electricity on the energy and power demand for space heating – Variations from measurements in 1000 apartments

Low energy buildings are usually characterized by a very well insulated building envelope and an efficient ventilation system that makes use of the heat in the exhaust air. Internal heat gains from residents and their use of appliances can cover the heating demand to a certain extent. The magnitude of internal heat gains that cover demand are often modelled in a simplified way and thus can be asso

Models of Leaving Home: Patterns and Trends in Sweden, 1830–1959

In this study, we examine the development of age at leaving the parental household in Sweden between the years 1830-1959. We utilize individual-level longitudinal data from two geographically and socioeconomically different regions: the county of Scania in the very south of Sweden, and Västerbotten to the north. We use descriptive and multivariate analyses to investigate how determinants, such as

In-situ Study of the Growth, Composition and Morphology of III-V Semiconductor Nanowires

It is widely known that nanoparticle seeded growth of III-V semiconductor nanowires often occurs via the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. However, conventional growth of nanowires is carried out in closed systems, where mostof the details and dynamics of the growth are impossible to follow. Since all analysis is typically carried out after growth completion and transfer, only the trends in the produc

Using earth observation-based dry season NDVI trends for assessment of changes in tree cover in the Sahel

The co-existence of trees and grasses is a defining feature of savannah ecosystems and landscapes. During recent decades, the combined effect of climate change and increased demographic pressure has led to complex vegetation changes in these ecosystems. A number of recent Earth observation (EO)-based studies reported positive changes in biological productivity in the Sahelian region in relation to
