Extrarenal plasma clearance of iohexol, chromium-51-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, and inulin in anephric pigs

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To improve the measurement of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), we determined the extrarenal plasma clearance of the GFR markers iohexol, chromium-51-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (51Cr-EDTA), and inulin using 11 anephric pigs. METHODS: After an intravenous (i.v.) bolus injection of the markers, the decay curves of their plasma concentrations were monitored for 29 h

BRCAsearch : written pre-test information and BRCA1/2 germline mutation testing in unselected patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer

Purpose: To evaluate a simplified method of pre-test information and germline BRCA1/2 mutation testing. Methods: In a prospective, single-arm study, comprehensive BRCA1/2 testing was offered to unselected patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer at three hospitals in south Sweden (BRCAsearch, ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02557776). Pre-test information was provided by a standardized invita

Emerging green steel markets surrounding the EU emissions trading system and carbon border adjustment mechanism

The global steel industry accounts for 8–10 % of global CO2 emissions and requires deep decarbonisation for achieving the targets set in the Paris Agreement. However, no low-emission primary steel production technology has yet been commercially feasible or deployed. Rest, shade, hydration and hygiene for the prevention of kidney injuries and inflammation in a Nicaraguan sugarcane worker cohort

Objectives To study the effect of a progressively enhanced rest–shade–hydration–hygiene (RSHH) intervention on kidney injury and inflammation biomarkers, and rates of clinical acute kidney injury (AKI) in Nicaraguan sugarcane workers with a very high rate of chronic kidney disease of non-traditional origin (CKDnt). Methods We analysed serum creatinine and C-reactive protein (CRP) and leukocyturia

The risk for major depression and bipolar disorder in the offspring of informative parental mating types : a Swedish population-based study

Background. Seeking to clarify the parent-offspring transmission of Major Depression (MD) and type I Bipolar Disorder (BD), we examined offspring MD and BD risk in five informative parental pairs: Unaffected x MD, Unaffected x BD, MDxMD, MDxBD and BDxBD. Methods. We identified 289,637 individuals born in Sweden 1970-1990, followed through 2018, from parents with MD and/or BD identified from Swedis

Welfare Technology in Practice : A Survey-Based Analysis of User Satisfaction, Expectations, and Needs

There is growing interest in using digital technology like welfare technology (WT) to support older adults (aged 75+) to age in place, particularly in Nordic countries. This cross-sectional survey study (n = 414), conducted in 18 Swedish municipalities, used descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression to examine: user experiences related to satisfaction with WT, as well as users’ expectaThere is growing interest in using digital technology like welfare technology (WT) to support older adults (aged 75+) to age in place, particularly in Nordic countries. Inhaled bronchodilators for the prevention and treatment of chronic lung disease in preterm infants

Background: Chronic lung disease (CLD) occurs frequently in preterm infants and is associated with respiratory morbidity. Bronchodilators have the potential effect of dilating small airways with muscle hypertrophy. Increased compliance and tidal volume, and decreased airway resistance, have been documented with the use of bronchodilators in infants with CLD. Therefore, bronchodilators are widely c

Ultrafast photoisomerization of pinacyanol : Watching an excited state reaction transiting from barrier to barrierless forms

Photoisomerization of 1,1′-diethyl-2,2′-carbocyanine iodide (pinacyanol) in alcohols was investigated by means of femtosecond time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. Only one out of two possible types of photoisomer was found. Viscosity-dependent kinetics indicate that the excited state dynamics consist of two parts, associated with a barrier-crossing observed in the blue side of stimulated emissio

Implementation and applications of robotic surgery within gynecologic oncology and gynecology; Analysis of the first thousand cases

Objective. To describe the effects of implementing a robotic surgical program within gynecologic oncology and gynecology at a tertiary referral hospital. Design: Prospective study. Setting: University Hospital, Lund and Lund University, Sweden. Methods. Based on prospective data retrieved for all patients, we evaluated intraoperative times, estimated blood loss, rate of conversion and rate of intr

Randomized Trial of Very Early Medication Abortion

Background Medication abortion, with a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol, is highly effective and safe. However, there is insufficient evidence on efficacy and safety at very early gestations before a pregnancy can be visualized with ultrasonography. Methods We conducted a multicenter, noninferiority, randomized, controlled trial involving women requesting medication abortion at up to 42

Temperature dependent intercalation of molten 1-hexadecanol into Brodie graphite oxide

Intercalation of very long molecules into the structure of multi-layered graphene oxide (GO) was studied using example of 1-hexadecanol (C16), an alcohol molecule with 16 carbon atoms. Brodie graphite oxide (BGO) immersed in excess of liquid C16 just above the melting point shows expansion of c-unit cell parameter from ∼6 Å to ∼48.76 Å forming a structure with two densely packed layers of C16 mole

Are there differences of inflammatory bio-markers between diabetic and non-diabetic patients with critical limb ischemia?

Aim. This observational study was undertaken in order to analyse whether any differences could be detected between diabetic and non-diabetic patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) concerning the inflammatory response. Methods. A total number of 259 consecutive patients with CLI were treated between October 2001 and January 2003. Results. Among the 259 patients, 135 (52%) had diabetes, previous

Dyslipoproteinemic changes in borderline hypertension

The present study examined plasma lipoprotein, lipoprotein lipase, hepatic lipase, and insulin levels in men with borderline hypertension (diastolic blood pressure 85 to 94 mm Hg) compared with age-matched normotensive control subjects (diastolic blood pressure less than or equal to 80 mm Hg, n = 75 + 75). High-density lipoprotein (HDL) subclasses were determined in a subset (n = 45 + 45). While t

Comparative genomic hybridization of postirradiation sarcomas

BACKGROUND. Radiotherapy is a known risk factor for sarcoma development. Postirradiation sarcomas arise within the radiation field after a latency period of several years and usually are highly malignant. Very little is yet known about their genetic changes. METHODS. Twenty-seven postirradiation sarcomas were analyzed by comparative genomic hybridization, which allows genome-wide screening of DNA

High prevalence of small duct primary sclerosing cholangitis among patients with overlapping autoimmune hepatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis

Background: Overlap syndrome is a term used for overlapping features of autoimmune hepatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis or primary biliary cirrhosis and for autoimmune cholangitis. We describe a high prevalence of small duct primary sclerosing cholangitis among patients with overlapping autoimmune hepatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. Methods: We sought to retrieve all patients wit

Multiparticle azimuthal correlations in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Measurements of multiparticle azimuthal correlations (cumulants) for charged particles in p-Pb at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV and Pb-Pb at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV collisions are presented. They help address the question of whether there is evidence for global, flowlike, azimuthal correlations in the p-Pb system. Comparisons are made to measurements from the larger Pb-Pb system, where such evidence is esta
